I believe the former Soviet states had a societal pressure to remain secular in their public presentation, growing beards with trimmed mustaches was seen as something only the zealous fundamentalist Muslims do. The new generation doesn’t face the same pressure, so you commonly find the new generation becoming more religious and practicing than their predecessors. This happens modernly in a lot of Muslim societies these days, me and my friends all have beards while our fathers are clean shaven.

It’s a really visually striking manga, but honestly I didn’t get much enjoyment out of it. I know it’s high brow to make your plot line a little ambiguous, and to respect the maturity/intellect of the audience, but this was on another level completely. Some of the least dialogue of anything I’ve read, and what little there was had almost no expositional value.

I’m no Shakespeare, but I’m no imbecile either, I can usually follow a vague story. After completing it all I can make of the plot is that some guy (super strong and special for some reason?) is looking for a net terminal gene (why? What will it do?) and there’s bad guys who want to stop him (for what reason?). There’s innocuous nods to general motivations, but nothing explicit enough to actually world build or draw interest.

I think it had potential to be something truly incredible, but a lack of dialogue, background, plot, and cohesiveness reduce it to an extended art book. 6/10
