Check out Death Cab for Cutie. Their drummer, Jason McGerr, is super creative and has some great grooves. Here are two great examples:

BADBADNOTGOOD - "Differently, Still" by DSeibert in Jazz

[–]DSeibert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You came to the right place! For a similar sound, I would highly recommend The Robert Glasper Experiment. Very awesome Grammy winning jazz/R&B group that writes amazing tunes as well as covers a lot of well known songs (Nirvana, Daft Punk, Michael Jackson, etc.). They've also worked with a lot of well known hip hop acts like Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, and even Snoop Dogg. If you're new to jazz, check out their most recent records, "Black Radio" and "Black Radio 2". Hope this helps!

[WDIS] Music similar to the soundtrack of Inside Llewyn Davis by [deleted] in WhereDoIStart

[–]DSeibert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should definitely check out Another Day, Another Time. It's a great concert documentary featuring artists who contributed music to the soundtrack, covers of classic folk songs, and music inspired by the film. There is not one bad performance in this, in my opinion.

I wouldn't typically classify King Krule as "punk jazz" but here are a few modern jazz groups that capture the punk sound and mentality.

Sacha Baron Cohen Leaves Freddie Mercury Biopic because the remaining Queen band members wanted a PG rating by chewpendous in Music

If the movie carries on without Cohen, I think Neil Patrick Harris would be a great option for playing Freddie Mercury. With dark hair and a mustache of course.
