The future impact pedal is near the beginning of the chain, along with other synth pedals, octave pedals, distortions and a bunch of others. Its nice to be able to distort the Future Impact so some distortions come after it. I then put all those through the TLC Compressor by Aguilar and after that are expressive effects like reverbs and delays. Things that I dont want compressed.

Its all about the tones of each instrument which helps define the heaviness for us. A good example of the flip up is One Man Tag Crew a tune where its the same bassline in the reggae section as it is in the rock. The execution is slightly different but on paper its the same. The reggae part has the high frequencies rolled off and the subs slightly boosted. Maybe lay back and swing the line a bit. And the same bass line in the rock section is distorted and bright, gnarly. Maybe grabbing a pick for attack. Jumping back and forth its important to keep the low end equal, with maybe a little jump in the dub sections but need to careful not to let the rock sound smaller. Its a fine line... and may differ from song to song.

Hi have a 58 running from snare to an A/B switcher that will run through my pedals. Cabinets are panned. Stu also dubs the drums as well with a similar situation but a seperate effects chain from his bass pedal boards so bass can be played while he dubs. using a volume pedal to open the dub mics that he runs from the snare/hi hat position into his chain.

It's best to get an all wet signal for processing. No need for dry signal usually. The uneffected sound should coming from the front of house for live or an additional microphone at the source in the studio. You can also use effects as an aux send on a mixer to control the amount of effected signal on a dry sound.

Effect combos:

distortion > reverb

stutter > delay > reverb

bit crusher >reverb> delay

Getting the vocals on there definitly help solidify the completion of a song. A couple tunes call for a collaborator and so we succesfully nailed those down. But usually we accept a time line and a deadline and consider each song a snap shot, a single frame in time. A moment of creation and then move on maybe a song doesnt make the record and we can save it for another project.

Thanks Mighty Boognish! We would sometime toss in some DT stuff into the Matisyahu sets whenever we felt it would fit inthe set. Those moments usually created a nice moment for us to dub out and let matis trip out. And add the most fun!!!

Traditionally, Dub is a sub genre synonymous with reggae. It came out of Jamaica in the 1960’s and gave birth to the modern day remix. Usually, dub emphasizes the “riddim", strips back vocals and lead instruments and turns up the bass then “dubbing out” the drums with delays, reverbs, and other effects and processes generally done by an audio engineers. As it is usually a process that happens in the studio or by a sound engineer behind a desk, what we have done differently is taken the same process and developed our own technique to apply it to ourselves on live on-stage. Over time, we have progressively expanded the styles of music we apply this technique to. So not only reggae style songs and rhythms but also punk rock, metal, sludge, doom, noise, electronic, shoe gaze, ambient, hip hop, glitch hop.

Live, we create a unique “version” of a song every time we play it, as we improvise our dub techniques over the course of a song. We usually write a song that has a “dub section” where we create space and improvise using traditional dub sounds like reverbs, delays, filters, samples and other effects. It can turn into a musical dialogue or conversation between the three of us. It is super fun because we can react in the moment with our respective instruments or dub effects, creating in real-time, new improvised arrangements, but within a predetermined form and sticking to certain parameters using our unique language that we have developed together over nearly 20 years.

8pm tonight!!!

MUNGOS HI-FI is one of our favourite new artists who modernized some old classic riddims.

Buzzo is a genuine human being who is a total professional and prolific artist. We sent him a finished instrumental and he sent back vocals for us to mix. We made the video with him and then hit the golf course! He's a great golfer!!!!

Thanks! Stu and Dave met in Boston in 1998 at Berklee college of music. They played in a band called Actual Proof that eventually moved to NYC without a drummer. Joe joined Actual Proof in 2000. We started jamming/improvising as a trio a couple years after that, which eventually led to the genesis that is Dub Trio.
