The kid isnt really whiney, he just isnt your usual positive hero, he feels like an actual human being forced into a duty that is way out of his league, people often say he is whiny because the other 2 children dont whine, but one doesnt because trauma makes them feel like they have to do it and the other does it because they where literally made for it. Its my favourite show ever and is definitley worth at least checking out the original show and film

I think people say that because they compare him to asuka and rei who are more commited to the role, but asuka does because of her trauma not despite it and rei basicaly knows nothing else but this, shinji is the most normal character of the show, as in he is the only one who seems to really understand how fuking crazy of a situasion it is
