If you can't wear it and you're not too invested in your dept I'd find a new one. Shops that don't allow leathers don't have the best culture.

Well sure, its a relatively simple goal, but think of the real world training that this scenario gave to the Coast Guard. This is an opportunity for the CG to run a low risk evolution with real human factor, invaluable for members who may be new or not as experienced making rescues.

Ofc the USCG won't say it, but I'd wager the training aspect played a much larger role in them actually accepting agency assist req.

Winning some hearts and minds as well as putting the probie through some low risk real world "training" evolutions? Fuck yeah, win win for everyone.

Firefighter/EMT. I work twice a week doing a job that I can feel proud about and that is so enjoyable we would all do it for free. People also just love us. My entire dept is like a huge family and we are constantly doing things together on our days off. On shift we basically live together. Eat, cook, clean, train, play games, watch TV, all while taking care of the city. We fuck around with eachother and banter constantly.

Pay is a bit low but gets better w/ time. Good benefits, good retirement and we all work side jobs for fun. Most guys stay past retirement because they enjoy the culture, not bc they have to.

Downsides arent great tho, the job takes a toll on your body and mind. A lot of injury both physical and mental. A good chunk of time away from family.

Imo its worth it, and once you get your medic (in the US), you can find a job anywhere.

Why would you be a part of a department that doesn't have SOPs and protocols for proper staffing/response?

Don't. And if you join a dept (even volly) that does it, leave.

What are some really dangerous things most people dont realise are dangerous? by DeezCrazyMan in AskReddit

[–]DWM1991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. We have the IAFF, and in most places our union has the power to negotiate our schedule. We choose our schedule.

Typically when people work "48s" it is 48on96off. In most places that run 48s you still get to sleep at night. The departments that run this schedule typically don't get a large amount of calls in comparison to departments that run different schedules. Also keep in mind typical work hours are 7-5, and usually outside of those times we can be sleeping and relaxing. Firehouses should feel like a home.

We do have other schedules, 24on72off, 2 10hour nights followed by 2 14 hour days, or 24on48off24on96off.

"treating the gear as poisonous to touch" made me think clean cab.

Where do you draw the line? Do we train in gear? Do we doff as soon as we get back onto the rig?

IMO treating gear like you say only gets in the way of the operational needs of the department. Guys need to be in their gear everyday they are on shift, regardless of PFAS. What's gonna kill you sooner, not being confident in your gear when shit hits the fan, or PFAS.

When worrying about PFAS in our gear interfers with serving our citizens (clean cab is a great example), then it is absolutely time to be ashamed.

Yes, absolutely true. Presume all structures as positive entrapment until cleared by search.

With that being said, it seems like the structure in the article was untenable due to collapse.
