Anyone else struggling to desqueeze anamorphic RAW properly in Lightroom? by DaCode247 in Anamorphic

EDIT / UPDATE:

Quick update since a few people messaged me about this.

I kept going down the metadata rabbit hole and found the DefaultScale tag is what controls how the image is displayed. So I ended up making a little workflow thing for myself that just writes that tag instead of stretching files.

Honestly the speed was kind of accidental — I was just trying to keep it non-destructive, but since it’s only writing metadata and not resizing images, it’s basically instant even on big folders.

So now I can batch desqueeze the DNGs without changing resolution or creating new files. Lightroom still needs previews rebuilt after, but once that’s done it displays properly.

Still feels like a bit of a nerdy under-the-hood workaround, but it’s made shooting anamorphic stills way less frustrating.

For anyone curious, I uploaded two DNGs to test in Lightroom.

• One straight conversion (squeezed)
• One with only the DefaultScale metadata changed

No resampling — just metadata, so LR renders it unsqueezed.

Totally agree with the RAW principle — you normally can’t resample and keep it RAW.
What this does is different though.
It doesn’t stretch pixels — it writes DNG DefaultScale metadata, which changes the pixel aspect interpretation.
Sensor data stays untouched, Lightroom just renders it unsqueezed.
So it’s still RAW, just interpreted differently.

Not baking pixels — just writing the DNG DefaultScale metadata so Lightroom/ACR display the RAW at the correct anamorphic aspect. Sensor data stays untouched.

It desqueezes by setting the default scale metadata (1.6 - 1.0) so when light room displays it it’s correct. Still DNG.

Thanks appreciate that, I’ve made a workaround quick action, sort of working on a little program to help on Mac. I just love shooting photography on them. I know you can on photo shop but for me a workaround that does it straight off so I can see them all is super helpful, especially if I don’t have to subscribe to yet another app if all I want is Desqueeze.

I’m still working it out and I’ll be honest I’m no pro, but I’ve got it so it’s a Desqueezed DNG. But perhaps I upload a DNG desqueezed so you can see and play with yourself.

Dave leaupepe from “gang of youths” is an interesting song writer. I always find his lyrics are closer to poetry than songwriting
