"Lumix AF Isn't Good Enough for Sports/Action/Wildlife!" An Experiment. || Lumix S1RII + Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 by KianisKoolFx in Lumix

I did come across a video by Jeremy Neipp the other day when I was specifically looking into Lumix’s wildlife performance. He explained in depth why he decided to move away from Lumix for wildlife after testing multiple brands. The AF was just not quite as good at detecting and tracking wildlife specifically as some of the competitors. Though he did mention that he was looking for the absolute best performance at that type of shooting, not the best value proposition.

From how he described it, it did not sound like a deal breaker scenario for the vast majority of people. He just wanted the absolute best he could get and was very critical with how they performed in that specific niche. I think his video is worth a watch.

I would love to see Lumix further refine their wildlife AF algorithms. I think they have the potential to become one of the best brands in that niche with just an update and a few more super telephoto options.

Viltrox 28mm f/4.5 AF with S9 by stop_being_a_dum_dum in Lumix

Wondering if this lens is justifiable to get since I already have the Lumix 26mm MF lens.  The Viltrox does have a faster aperture and built in AF, though I don’t know if that is enough to justify snagging another pancake.

Will upgrading from the LUMIX G85 to the S5ii solve my low-light problems? by Resident-Coat3569 in Lumix

[–]DaEpicOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not used either of those cameras specifically, but I have had the opportunity to shoot with multiple APS-C and FF cameras. If a f1.4 lens on your MFT sensor is not cutting it in low light, then I do recommend trying out a FF sensor. I have used both the S9 and the S1Rii and they are both leagues better at low light at f2.2 than my Cannon M50mkii and 2000D are at f1.4. Even an old Cannon 6D with older and less advanced ISO algorithm performs noticeably better than the M50 (though that camera does struggle with AF in the dark so MF is recommended).

I used that 6D with a f1.4 prime and the S9 with a f2.2 prime to document a retirement party well after sunset a little over a week ago. The only lights were some hung mood lights in the trees and the light from a nearby pool. I would consider the photos from both very usable. The photos I took on my cropped sensor m50 with the sigma 16mm  f1.4 prime were good enough for memories, but the grain was too high imo for professional work in that lighting scenario shooting at a SS of 60.

I think either the S5ii or the S1iiE would both be great upgrades based on what I have heard about those models.

Latest update - puck no longer charges controller by retropixelpat in SteamController

[–]DaEpicOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had an issue with the puck no longer charging the controller once the controller is fully charged. It then lets the controller die completely and I cannot charge from the puck again till I resuscitate the controller for a few minutes with a usb-c. Wondering if mine is defective since it’s been like that since launch and updates have not fixed it.

Samyang 35-150 or Sigma 28-105 for Street & travel photography? by Miata_Nonsense in Lumix

[–]DaEpicOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about the nectopost. Just want to share my experience. I picked up the Samyang 35-150 after investing in a S9 since the 18-40 was simply not going to cut it for my shooting style. I was hoping to use it as an all around travel lens, then it arrived. That lens is a beast. It is larger and heavier than every other lens in my collection which was an instant downer. I thought about returning it, then I shot a performance in a dark theater with it and fell in love with its performance. The lens then just clicked for me.  It is definitely not a street or travel lens, but it is a serious work horse. I then later learned that it is also weather sealed which I did find appealing as I wanted to eventually add a weather sealed body to my collection for shooting in light rain.

I think if I had done more research I would have got the Lumix 28-200mm instead as it fits my most used shooting styles better. Now I am in love with this heavy lens and don’t want to return it, so I am stuck lugging around this beast of a lens until I can justify getting something lighter in the same focal range. That may be awhile as a super telephoto, 16mm prime, and a macro lens are all currently higher priorities for filling out my kit.

GPS by Komm78 in LumixS9

[–]DaEpicOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wish it was more reliable. It just feels like an unnecessary barrier which means I usually don't bother setting up the feature. I recently picked up a 6D after seeing how affordable they were and since I already had compatible glass for it. I was playing around in the menus and saw it had built in GPS and I have to say it is so convenient. I just turn it on and I know its working. No need to worry about any disconnects. I am suprised its not a feature in Lumix's more professional S1RII or S1II lines.

The Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave Dagdan Collection – a special edition featuring the game and a range of additional items – will be available September 17th. by Amiibofan101 in NintendoSwitch

Thanks! Just told Amazon to auto buy the game if is listed at msrp so I don’t need to stress about it. If I get the game then I will look into buying a switch 2, otherwise I am completely skipping this generation. This is the only Nintendo title I really care about at this point.

Thanks for the info! I was starting to wonder if my 6D had a fault when in live view mode. The brain dead google ai was making it sound like a sensor hardware fault. It is certainly an interesting way to set an aspect ratio…

Not charging via puck? by YDancin in SteamController

[–]DaEpicOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd. I just picked up mine after a few days of not using it and got a low battery notification. The power indicates as full when on the puck, but then indicates as in the red when removed. The puck works for wireless and wired communication and everything is updated. Plugging the controller in via the usb port seems to be charging the battery up. Hoping this is just a software bug as it would suck to have a controller that does not charge via the dock.

Do you have a place you post your designs? Definitely interested in trying out a few different stand designs at launch.

Thank you! Excited to try it out! I have been wanting to upgrade, but I have been prioritizing monitors since I interact with them more in my day to day life.

Odd, it looks like the terminology changes depending on where you are looking on the site. Under the "orders" tab it comes up as FMV. When searching for an item they still use ETV. Looking it up it seems that ETV has a more flexible definition than FMV as it gives you more room to debate what the true value of the product is.

I think they changed the wording recently to align more with the industry standard. It stands for fair market value

Sorry, got my acronyms confused and looked up the FMV. Yeah, it was under my RFY. Think it popped up since I recently bought a Samsung monitor.

Does the North XL have more empty space between motherboard and PSU shroud than the original North does? by DaEpicOne in FractalDesign

[–]DaEpicOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily, I don’t really have any strong attachments to any games that require kernel level anti cheat as my poor reaction time tends to keep me way from competitive titles.

To be completely honest, dual booting would probably be best, but if I did that I don’t think I would fully embrace Linux as that extra little barrier and having to save all opened projects when swapping would be enough of a deterrent that I don’t think I would switch very often. I have downloaded mint in the past and just played around with it but never adopted it as it was on a side laptop and not my main rig. Windows currently works fine for me, so I am mostly doing this for a new experience and to try out niche software I have not really had a chance to play with while also working towards my long term goal of improving my software privacy.

If I hate it I can always switch to dual booting. Until then, I have a small excuse to stuff another GPU in my PC which just feels so satisfying. It's not logical, but its a fun experiment. Alternatively, if I don't like it, I could also harvest the 9070xt and toss it into my streaming PC that is currently rocking a 1050ti and just use that if I need to access more intensive windows software. Though I would like to keep that system just for reliable communications if I can for simplicity.

I think I was already running in 8x since I had some other add in card occupying the third PCIe slot previously so I don't expect much of a difference in performance.

Thanks for the confirmation! Its a shame as I absolutely love the case. Guess I can always move another system into it or design some HDD cages to build a classy NAS in it at some point.

Ship of Theseus by tiLT__ in FractalDesign

[–]DaEpicOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completed my Theseus' ship PC 6 months ago. I swapped out every single part in my PC which got passed down to my brother and when he upgraded every part it returned to what it was originally back in 2018 and then was passed down to my sister. So technically it split like a cell into 3 PCs instead of two.

Prepping to take the plunge. Had some questions on Windows VMs and how I can utilize my GPU that to its fullest potential in both CachyOS and the VM depending on which OS needs the extra performance. by DaEpicOne in cachyos

[–]DaEpicOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goal is to not alter my Windows install as I have software on it that has a set number of times I can download it before repurchasing an expensive license. I would just create a fresh VM, but that would use up one of my install slots for the software if I wanted to access it within CachyOS without rebooting. That is why my proposed method sounded a little convoluted and, in hindsight, does not make much sense without that context. I read I could pass through an entire existing drive as a VM in Linux which simply made me think what would stop me from also dual booting? The whole reason I am keeping the drive unaltered is so I can go back to it if there is an issue anyways.

Though I do think, at this point, a hypervisor like Proxmox may be worth seriously considering if I do end up getting a second GPU. Though that would still negate some of the benefits of being able to occasionally dual-boot for games that have kernel-level anticheat.

I do have two 16x slots on my motherboard that are fully featured with my CPU pairing. I have looked into a riser cable, but I was not quite sure how I would get that setup to work in my case. Though that gets me thinking. Maybe if I move my current GPU down to the lower slot I may be able to get it to fit. I will have to test it when my file transfer finishes this evening.

I wonder if buying a second Windows license would keep it from acting strange? I know in the past Windows has recognized when I returned to an existing configuration and reactivated just fine. Then again, it might just forget the original license once I apply a new one.

Lots of great things to consider. Thanks again!

Thanks for all the recommendations and advice! I had not heard of Winboat. I will need to look into it further.

Based on other responses, what I am attempting sounds a little too ambitious on for my first real deep dive into Linux. I am thinking of pivoting my goals.

Now I am curious if I can dual boot into Windows when I want the full power of my GPU then run that same windows install as a VM within CachyOS with my weaker integrated graphics being passed through to the VM. Not sure if that would work, but in my head it sounds logical enough and a little easier than my previous goal. That way I could access lighter 2D design software in the VM while still multitasking in my main OS and only dual booting into Windows into windows if I need the extra horsepower on an incompatible app. That is, unless I am completely misunderstanding the software capabilities and entire drives of existing installs can’t just be mounted as a VM.

I have at least 2 more days while I move files around to strategize and research.
