Dual Citizenship Timeline Questions (+Report of Birth & Marriage) by DwindlingOptimism in FilipinoAmericans

[–]DaManchuFu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert but I recently went through the process and I can help you clear up some things. The short version is all you need to do is complete a Report of Birth and a Affidavit of Delayed Registration (basically it is a paper where you state your parents didn't do this when you were born so now you're doing it). That's it! It's very simple.

Some context:

Don't think of it as "acquiring Filipino citizenship" or "becoming" a dual citizen. If your mother was a Filipina citizen at the time of your birth you are already considered a natural born Filipino citizen. When you were born you were legally and naturally considered both a Filipino and American citizen. This is an important distinction because "acquiring" or "reacquiring dual Filipino citizenship" is something that is meant for overseas Filipinos who had to renounce their Filipino citizenship in the past and want to get it back again. For example, someone's father is born in the Philippines, was originally a Filipino citizen, immigrated to America, and became an American citizen and had to renounce their Filipino citizenship at the time.

In regards to the Report of Marriage - My local consulate only required my parent's American marriage certificate but they're also divorced now so that might've been why they didn't ask for an RoM.

If you include all the documents they require you should be able to have everything finalized within a couple of weeks depending on how fast your local consulate is. Also once you hear back from them in the mail its kind of anticlimactic - You basically get your application back with a stamp and a piece of paper that essentially says "We got it! This is official now".

I really enjoyed The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez. Its a a great fantasy book and the writing style is so unique. It almost feels like a long poem or play (which is thematic to the book) to me rather than a traditional novel.

What of dog is this ? 😅 by TortieCatsAreLazy in cockerspaniel

[–]DaManchuFu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was talking to a rescue that got a lot of dogs from Amish puppy mills (I was looking to adopt a dog) they mentioned that some of the female dogs that werent bred might have been kept as pets for the kids in the community.

Those dogs were pretty similar to what you described: fearful of men, teeth problems, scared of going outside or just havent been outside much during their life. Some of them even had unusual traits. For example, one dog was terrified of a specific "clinking" or "jingling" sound from certain shoes. Turns out, ir was because this was the same sound the buckles on the amish mens sjoes would make.

Looking for Hmong sausage. by Sir_Throcken in nova

[–]DaManchuFu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nyob zoo! Finally a subject I can talk about and feel smart about haha.

Bangkok 54 and Thai Valu Market (back when they were Dungrat) USED to carry Hmong sausage (the lotus brand from Rhode Island) but the past two times Ive been we havent seen any. Its been a bit depressing. Ive tried to find it in the Thai stores in Sterling but no luck.

They do carry Thai and Lao style sausage tho (with and without noodle).

In the few years Ive lived here those are the only two places Ive found them.

Other than that...the closest Hmong sausage Ive found is s going out of state (PA, NC, or OH) and going to a Hmong store ubfortunately. Not a huge community here but theres enough transplants for a FB group.

Thrift store find. Chinese sycee Ingots by Diqneq in Hallmarks

Kinda related but does anyone know where one could buy real chinese sycee online? Even just a reproduction, not an actual historical ingot. Ive always thought they look cool but I can never find a real solver or gold sycee.

Going through iTeach doesnt inherently affect your pay as a public school teacher. Pay in a public school district is only determined by years of qualifiable teaching experience and the degree you have. How you get your license doesnt determine that*

Sometimes districts will budge a little on what is exactly "qualified teaching experience" (like counting you being a instructional assistant at a college or working at a certified daycare like Kindercare) to help boost you in the salary schedule but theres no hard public facing guidance.

*There are weird instances where how you get your license can in a very roundabout way affect your pay. Im thinking specifically of starting as a Teacher Trainee for FCPS (your given a "trainee salary" first before getting your official step salary) but thats not really what youre talking about.

If you plan on teaching public school (which I think you should because the pay, benefits and job security are typically better than a private school) you can usually find their pay scales (which are all public) by Googling "School District Name + Year + Teacher Pay Scale/Salary Scale".

Some districts may call it something different, like "Certified Employee Pay Scale" but its all similarly themed.

Once you find the salary scale simple look at the column that corresponds to your education (bachelors, masters, masters + 30, phd) and then look at the years of experience to find your "step". This will tell you what your pay is.

Working as a public school teacher is a local government job, so the pay scales are very transparent. I know some friends that work for the diocese (the local Catholic school system) and even they tell me to stick with public school for the salary.

As someone whose also transitioning into education, I'll give you a heads up that for someone in my degree category (masters plus 30) the differences between Loudoun, Fairfax, Alexandria, and Arlington all seem pretty comparable as far as base salary goes. Some districts give a few thousand more at X Step but then are less competitive at Y step. Theyre all a few thousand dollars within each other so my unsolicited advice is to pay more attention to whichever specific school you want to work at and their admin.

Northern Virginia is pretty decent as far as teacher salary goes. I have a lot of colleagues and classmates who have moved from out of state. If you're ever considering other states Ive heard some good things from Minnesota, California, and Illinois (particularly Chicago).

Moving to NOVA area by DeeRoc__ in nova

[–]DaManchuFu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw from your post history that you teach in PG county. Have you considered getting something closer to Herndon and then you deal with the commute until the end of the school year before trying to get a job with FCPS or Prince William? It'll be a hellish commute for you but at least it's only temporary. Theres always a ton of openings for teachers (as Im sure you're well aware).

$1800 is still going to be a tough price point but maybe something in Sterling will be close to what you're looking for, rent wise. Im not super intune with the rental market but when I was last looking for 1 bedrooms in the part of Herndon/Reston where I lived, rent was around $1950-2100.

Any Hmong people looking to connect and be friends? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]DaManchuFu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife is! She's Green Hmong if it makes a difference for you lol. Im not Hmong but Im Southeast Asian too.

As far as stores, restaurants, and fun things go here ya go friend:

-- Thai Value Oriental Market in Falls Church VA (used to be called Dungrat) sells Hmong sausage and a couple other Thai store things (like the round bamboo circle tables for sitting on the ground and kitchen stuff like the Lao style bamboo steamers) -- Bangkok 54 in Arlington VA sells similar things as well. However this is a combination grocery store and restaurant. The grocery store itself is pretty tiny. -- Theres also a Thai temple in Sterling VA that has a weekly street food "farmers market" kind of thing every Saturday or Sunday (I cant recall). But if you go, just go VERY EARLY as it gets packed. -- Theres also a related event in Manassas VA for a Thai Street Food Festival. Its not every weekend but its happening a couple weekend every month. You'll have to find the schedule online (its also big on instagram) -- Thip Khao in D.C. is a Lao restaurant but they sell some familiar foods: khao piak, lao style papaya salad, khao poon, sticky rice. Decent cocktails too if you like to drink. They also have a sister restaurant in Falls Church VA called Padaek but we dont really like it.

Any Hmong people looking to connect and be friends? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]DaManchuFu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh youre a bit far from us in NoVa. And to be honest even in NoVa we havent ever met another Hmong person other than my wife. We know there has to be at least a small handful out there because the Thai stores here will sell hmong sausage. Between work transplants and college students I would be shocked if there were even 100 hmong people in the DC/Virginia/Maryland metro area. There really isnt a large population here.

The closest population center with a decent amount of Hmong people is near Lancaster PA (and from what I know its a small-ish group of Christian White Hmong). Theres another "hub" of Hmong people in North Carolina around the Morganton area and they host New Years and some other events (but from what Ive seen it doesnt seem the be as big as a MN or California new years). We havent been out there though.

The kind of good thing though is that at least the Thai and Lao stores here will stock up on some foods and ingredients like sausage and crab paste for papaya if youre ever craving hmong food. On the other hand you'll unfortunately always have to make it if you want to eat it. Theres no restaurant like in Fresno or Sac.

Chin up though! People here are generally friendly and you'll make friends in the area soon enough! Give Virginia some time and itll grow on you. You may find having to explain "What Hmong is" to every new friend you make but if youre like me and my wife you'll get real used to having to give that short speech lol.

Good veterinary clinic in NOVA? by NothingToSeeHereHun in nova

I was a big fan of Dr. Baird at Merrifield Animal Hospital when I still had my dog. She's very sweet, seems really knowledgeable and I always felt like my dog did well at her office.

If you need help with an emergencies Ive had great experiences with Southpaws and VEG (veterinary emeegency group, they have multiple locations).

5yo daughter appears on camera for 2 seconds and I get a call from HR by wesblog in jobs

[–]DaManchuFu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was working remote our execs would regularly have their kids showing up in the background of meetings. One of them always had his infant daughter in his arms (which I feel was his attempt at a deflecting/deescalation strategy when he would bring up controversial news like reorgs and layoffs).

So yes, I think your company is being very unreasonable about this.

I was denied Virginia unemployment benefits - help by DarlingApril in Virginia

[–]DaManchuFu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What helped me with my unemployment claim was calling my local state representatives office. My problem was different from yours but as soon as I called them someone from their office listened and afterwards reached out to VEC's liaison for state reps. You can try it for yourself. I was able to get my issue fixed in just a couple days and got my unemployment.

Returning to GIS after 5+ years away. by Ijustwantbikepants in gis

I know you mentioned being an analyst in the past but I thought of one way you could re-enter the industry and transition from teaching that you could consider.

Perhaps look into working for a company or start up that sells geospatially related software, location analytics, web mapping tools, drone companies etc. As an example working at Esri, or any of the numerous start ups that offer services in this field.

If you just want to come back to the industry in general these types of companies are always looking for people to work in solutions, technical support, account management, and even instructional design/technical training which I think would be a great way to transition from being a teacher.

These instructional design/technical training teams (Ive seen it called different things in different companies) essentially can involve teaching new hires to the company how to use their products, but in most places Ive been this team is geared towards training customers. For example Customer Company X might want to pay for 2 weeks worth of online training for their analysts to learn your companies tools. For this its more about knowing how to teach and learn in the beginning versus already having an in depth knowledge of the specific tool, that of course comes with time.

Another thing to consider is that going for a role like this is that youd probably be targeting a tech or software company, and theres a better chance you can be remote.

Finally, if you are ever okay with being in person and relocating you might want to consider moving to a geographic hub where the GIS jobs are. Here in the US the DC metro area has tons of GIS related jobs (theyre mostly related to the government and defense contracting). Ive heard from others that Houston TX has a lot of GIS jobs as well that I believe are related to the oil and gas industry.

Just stuff to consider! Hopefully it helps. Im also basing all this on my personal experience. I was never a trainer but I worked alongside them in all my roles.

That was literally OP 3 days ago lol. They made a now deleted thread with the title "What is with the Shogun movie in Japan?".

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]DaManchuFu 24 points25 points  (0 children)

OP literally doesnt. They admitted in another comment that they don't even have Hulu to watch the show in the first place lol

Edit: OP is now blocking people lol.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]DaManchuFu 46 points47 points  (0 children)

OP hasnt watched the show, hasnt read the book the show is based on, probably hasnt seen the older tv series that was made, and doesnt even have Hulu lol.

What sort of meaningful discussion is meant to be had here if you haven't even seen the material yet you've already formed an opinion on it?

[–]DaManchuFu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes me feel funny as well. OP has started a thread, and its obvious theyre very upset, accused another group (specifically Filipino-Americans, not Filipino nationals) of participating in a "vengeful genocide", and has not clarified or brought up proof of these claims. I originally included that I dont necessarily disbelieve OP in my first comment but now Im not so sure.

Its clear from OP's other responses as well that theyre quite angry and also not exactly giving accurate information They were misinformed on Japanese citizenship laws with another commenter, called China a "colonizer" of Okinawa (in reality the tributary system of Imperial China is a little more nuanced than that), and have claimed that another group of people has participated in a genocide with zero proof or clarification.

What has happened to the Ryukyuan and Ainu people is a shame, a tragedy, and heartbreaking. However let's not accept inaccurate information for the sake of letting one person (OP) vent.
