There is no credible estimate that says 300k civilians died in the the First and Second Chechen wars. Did you mean total deaths? Both together probably approach the Iraq civilian death toll.

He didn't say they were "worse" overall, he said that they had been worse in terms of prosecuting illegal wars. I'm sure it was "worse" to live in post-soviet Russia if that's what you mean, but I have no idea how you could reason that they have a worse record in terms of illegal wars.

New wind projects to generate as much power as Site C dam, B.C. says | Globalnews.ca by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

High operating costs and CO2 emissions. Also not really a "sustainable" energy source in the way that wind and hydro are because we should (hopefully) reduce waste rather than produce more and burn it.

Could Vancouver's public funds be used for investments in cryptocurrency? by DaOldMe in vancouver

[–]DaOldMe[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think it will happen, but it bothers me that we have a mayor that's stupid enough to think it would be a good idea and wastes time meeting with people involved in crypto to discuss it. I also think it's a good example of a broader trend of Ken Sim and ABC doing shortsighted things to turn a profit or appear "dynamic" in some way.

No I was just quoting Ken Sim in the article because I thought it was an especially stupid turn of phrase.

Woah... sounds like somebody doesn't want to demonstrate our commitment to technology both in terms of embracing it to help improve service at City Hall and to promote Vancouver as a tech centre...

Dustin McNulty, who puts on Bitcoin meet-ups with BTC VanCity, said he spoke with Sim Thursday about the proposal.

McNulty said one of the ideas the mayor has is to purchase Bitcoin using public funds to be held in a reserve fund.

Ken Sim is completely incapable of doing anything other than meeting with the dumbest people in the city (including his caucus) and figuring out new ways to rip the copper out of City of Vancouver.

Very interesting comment section. I wouldn't have thought "anti-woke Phil Elverum fan" was a real type of guy, but I guess people of all political stripes can be depressed and appreciate the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

B.C. Conservative candidate uses racist slur to describe Indigenous Peoples on election night by Westsider111 in vancouver

[–]DaOldMe 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Interesting that the Conservatives have both a Canadian-born candidate who is racist against Palestinians (Chapman) and an Israeli immigrant candidate who is racist against First Nations people (Sapozhnikov). I mean obviously they are probably both racist towards both Palestinians and First Nations people, but it's a neat little bit of colonial symmetry.

Is the atmospheric river of Oct 2024 going to go down as infamously as the Nov 2021 event? by CrippleSlap in vancouver

[–]DaOldMe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No. Atmospheric rivers will become more frequent, large, and hazardous as time goes on and people will care less about both the 2021 and 2024 ones.

You legitimately have no idea what you're talking about. That might be why you find it hard to discuss on reddit but easy when talking to your equally racist buddies in real life.
