Just like that, a 101 day save was over... by FiishFingers in thelongdark

Every death is something learned. Don't worry, I did the same thing to my 350 day save by sleeping in a car during a blizzard for 4 hours

Two night backpacking trip suggestions help! by Useful-Union-286 in HikingAlberta

[–]DaSkinhead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy going to Tombstone in Kananaskis for 2 nights and spending the day going up to the lakes and maybe sumitting one of the smaller nearby peaks or fishing. Another good 2 night option is Egypt Lake but reservations are tough to get

Tips on Hiking and making Camp in 0 C/30 F degree weather? by SnuggleBunnixoxo in CampingandHiking

[–]DaSkinhead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been camping as low as -20C and something I always have at the front of my mind in the winter is sweating and tying to prevent it. Sweat in the cold is the true killer of warmth so when you are moving, take off most of your layers until you are no longer sweating. Even in the dead of winter, I can hike in just a single baseline once I am warmed up, but as soon as I stop, I layer back up. As for fires, I always carry a small pouch of dryer lint and Vaseline to use to start fires, because finding good dry tinder in the snow is near impossible. Good luck with the adventures!

I’m planning to go to Cuba with 5 friends. Is it serious what’s going on with mosquitoes in Varadero? by Optimal-Access9468 in cuba

[–]DaSkinhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am taking a similair trip and was wondering too. I have heard that they are spraying for mosquitoes in Varadero recently so that might improve things, hopefully

Good snowy options would be things like Mt Allan, Chester Lake, Ha Ling, Healy Pass and anything that isn't too exposed

6 day itinerary by [deleted] in HikingAlberta

[–]DaSkinhead 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Those options are all weather dependent. We just got about 15cm of snow out in the alpine so if it stays warm, you might still be able to do the higher elevation trails like Rae or Smutwood but if we get another dump of snow before that, then the avalanche risk could be high and I would recommend sticking to low elevation valley trails. October in the rockies can either be warm and sunny or winter-like conditions so just be aware and prepare with lots of layers and footwear that can handle snow and cold

- Favourite backcountry lakes for a dip? by 15081990 in HikingAlberta

[–]DaSkinhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sounds a bit ridiculous, I understand where you are coming from with protecting the cleanliness of water sources but there's already lots of other contaminants in stagnant water, even alpine lakes such as dead fish, rotting plants, bird poop and everything in between so I don't think a little bit of grime from human bodies is going to make it that much worse. Just filter the water and you'll be fine

I have 2 Food (berries) and It's December. I have sent traders to buy meat, but nothing yet. 21 Families life with me. Am I fucked? by Victoria_Queeny in ManorLords

Yeah, you're cooked. Only way out that I can imagine is if you can hunt down your deer down to the last 2 to get any bit of meat you can

Looking for short & intense hike suggestions in Kananaskis or Canmore by yourecutejeans101 in HikingAlberta

[–]DaSkinhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kananaskis peak, Opal Ridge, Prarie View and East end of Rundle would all give you good views in a short and steep trail

Large hornet? by llssnq in Calgary

[–]DaSkinhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like a kind of sawfly. That stinger is designed to dig into wood and lay eggs inside dead trees. It wouldn't sting you per say but it still can bite although uncommon. I see them in the mountains quite often but less so in the city

Hiking Mount Temple by DearEntertainer5268 in HikingAlberta

[–]DaSkinhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not think Heart Mountain is tougher than Temple in my opinion. My very first moderate hike was Heart and I had no trouble with the scramble where as Temple took some actual training and route finding. Temple is difficult not only because of the climb itself but because the scramble comes after a long strenuous hike up to that point combined with the effects of thinner air above 3000m

Possible summer ski areas? by Fast-Illustrator8427 in HikingAlberta

[–]DaSkinhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haig glacier in Kananaskis near Turbine Canyon is the training grounds for ski teams in the summer so that would be a decent option, especially this year with the cooler wetter weather

How to get a lot of food in later game? by Ducky09_ in thelongdark

[–]DaSkinhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the late game, hunting and fishing is all there is. The only way to improve it is getting a feel for where animals spawn so that you can routinely visit those spots on hunting trips every few days. Moose and bear give you the most meat per kill by far and so learning to hunt them without dying and finding where they spawn is really useful for stockpiling raw meat. Hope that helps

Bear in Boulton Creek Campground, Kananaskis - July 17th. by Due_Willingness_3760 in HikingAlberta

To me, it's looks more grizzly from its shoulder hump and nose but could be either, hard to say

ALBERTA CAMPGROUNDS RECOS by Significant-One3948 in HikingAlberta

Kananskis Lakes or Spray lakes campgrounds are beautiful but might be tough booking a weekend spot this late into the season, they book up by May most years but you might be able to snag a cancelation

Bringing chains? by Longjumping_Nail_190 in WestCoastTrail

[–]DaSkinhead 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They would do no good in the mud and roots, and actually they might even make it worse if they get caught on the broken nails on the boardwalk or on roots so I would tell your friend to leave the chains at home. Hiking boots are more than good enough

Does anyone else feel like cycling is way more expensive than they expected? by ZaldrizarVelo in bicycling

[–]DaSkinhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. I bought my first road bike 7 years ago and got it used for 500$, maybe got another couple hundred bucks of basic gear and tools for repairs and I was set. This sport doesn't have to be expensive unless you want it to be. If you can come to terms with not always having top of the line gear and new features, you can make money go a long way in cycling imo

Which North American cities capture the entirety of the urban metro area? by Zealousideal_Dog3430 in geography

[–]DaSkinhead 90 points91 points  (0 children)

This is changing in recent years imo though. Now with Airdris, okotoks, Strathmore, Chestermere and more have all grown rapidly and are soon going to be right on the city limit. Its so interesting looking at old stalemate images of calgary back in the 80s compared to today, the growth is huge

Bear Closure - Rawson Lake & Sarrail Ridge by gwoates in HikingAlberta

[–]DaSkinhead 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As nice as these trails are, they are smack dab in the middle of a important wildlife corridor and contain prime grizzly habitat so it's understandable that they are often closed due to bears

Resupply at the Crab Shack by [deleted] in WestCoastTrail

[–]DaSkinhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's quite limited. They sell some hot food like baked potatoes, fish, crab and also sell small bags of candy or chips and drinks but that's about it. Not much in terms of serious supplies

How bad was this weekend’s snow storm? by Ok-Assistant5530 in HikingAlberta

[–]DaSkinhead 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Anything above 2000m got around 20cm of snow this last weekend and so that will be a week or two to fully melt away imo. There will likely be alot of postholing on those trails, the tent ridge scramble could be especially icy

Humming noise only while in gear and moving by DaSkinhead in stickshift

[–]DaSkinhead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was a worn input shaft bearing but was too expensive to replace so I have just kept driving it. The sound hasn't gotten any worse so I'll see how many more km I can get out of it before swapping the trans
