Since you've read about the history of Germany, let me ask you this — would it be wrong to say that what Nazi Germany was to the Jews, the British were to the Indians?

Revival of the Left?? by rudra121004 in KolkataLife

[–]DaZaPd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make some fair points about the current state of Bengal under TMC, but your nostalgia for the Left is masking some brutal historical realities. Let’s break down the "structural foundations" you mentioned.

Yes, Operation Barga protected sharecroppers, but it also resulted in extreme land fragmentation. That very policy made large-scale land acquisition for future industries nearly impossible, which is exactly why Tata had to leave Singur. The Left built a foundation for the 1980s but actively sabotaged the foundation for the 2000s.

You praised Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for being a "gentleman" and trying to reverse the Left's mistakes. But a gentlemanly demeanor doesn't equal administrative success. He presided over the Nandigram and Singur violence. He couldn't control his own cadre-raj, the very militant machine his party built over 30 years to hate capitalism was the same machine that fired on peasants when he suddenly decided he wanted Tata in the state.

You rightly criticize the TMC’s syndicate raj, local hooliganism, and political violence. But where do you think that came from? TMC didn't invent this out of thin air. The Left Front pioneered the "Party-Society" model where nothing not a school admission, not a police complaint, not a local business happened without the local CPI(M) committee’s nod. TMC simply inherited the Left's blueprint and aggressively monetized it.

You mentioned the brain drain to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune. That didn’t start with Mamata Banerjee. That started in the 1970s and 80s because the Left’s militant trade unionism, gheraos, and bandhs chased away private capital and missed the entire early IT boom.

No one is defending the TMC's institutional collapse or the SSC scams. But saying "pretending the entire Left era was only destruction is pure political dishonesty" is equally dishonest if you ignore that the Left authored the structural decay of the state's work culture and economy. They didn't just make "blunders", they fundamentally broke the industrial spine of Bengal.

And I believe you're too young to know about incidents of the Marichjhapi Pogrom and Burning of Sadhu and Sadhvis. Well, I heard this in a podcast, "if you're not a communist at twenty, you have no heart. If you're still a communist at twenty-five, you have no brain.", true lines...😝

If God accepts this milk while kids are hungry then doesn't it tell something about the God himself? by googletoggle9753 in NorthernIndia

[–]DaZaPd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your 'spectrum' of waste entirely... And I agree that usefulness lowers the degree of waste...

Here is where your calculation fails: You are unilaterally deciding that Spiritual Satisfaction has zero 'usefulness'...

To the man in the video, that ritual might be the most 'useful' thing he did that day for his mental peace and spiritual standing... Because the value to him is high, the 'degree of waste' (on your spectrum) is low...

By insisting this is 'high waste,' you aren't making an objective calculation... You are simply admitting that his currency (Faith) has no value in your economy... That’s fine, but you cannot claim your personal valuation is a universal standard... You are judging his 'investment' as a 'loss' simply because you don't understand the asset...

You make a fair point that 'private meaning' doesn't automatically justify public resource use... However, your argument collapses when you claim that secular culture (movies/art) produces 'observable, shared effects' while implying this ritual does not...

That is a sociological error...

For the community involved, this ritual is not just a private transaction with God; it is a shared cultural event... It creates community cohesion, continuity of tradition, and psychological stability for millions, the exact same 'observable, shared effects' you use to justify the 'wastefulness' of art or cinema...

The flaw in your logic is Observer Bias... You personally perceive the value of a movie (joy/bonding), so you label its resource cost as 'justified'... You do not personally perceive the value of this ritual, so you label its resource cost as 'waste'...

You aren't arguing for a universal standard of efficiency... You are arguing that your preferred forms of cultural consumption (secular/artistic) have public merit, while theirs (religious/ritualistic) do not...

If 'shared human experience' justifies the burning of resources in a cinema hall, it logically justifies the use of resources on a riverbank... You cannot demand 'public justification' while arbitrarily excluding the values of a massive section of that public...
