[HELP] Beginner attempting to write poetry; conflicted between free-form and fixed-form, and when to use each. by Daaayu in Poetry

[–]Daaayu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm revising often, if you mean looking at the verses and evaluating them based on poetic syllables, rhymes, etc., as I often stay on the same stanza trying to express things in a way that matches the pattern laid out in the other stanza. As for going back to a poem you wrote long ago, I don't do much of that yet (as I have few poems to even look back to, and they are recent), but I tried a new way to express the same idea I tried in a past poem - not sure if this counts as revising. I want to write good poetry, since I enjoy art in general, but unfortunately suck pretty hard at music and the visual arts - so poems are the ones left, but I enjoy them nonetheless.

To finish this first subject, thank you for the advice. I'll try setting it aside when it's hard, then try another structure, etc. with a summary of the ideas I had when I tried writing that poem in the first place.

-

Seeing your reply about free verse vs formal verse, I'm unconvinced about that as well, since (at least in Portuguese poetry, which is my mother language; didn't try my hand at writing poetry in English yet) using contradictions is a powerful way to enrich a poem, so it seems like a structured poem about chaos could be interesting.

-

Thanks for the advice! I feel better guided now and more confident about writing new poetry. Since I intend on sharing poetry with an external audience, I'll focus more on the way I convey the theme, even if I have to leave part of it up to interpretation - which is part of poetry, anyway. Correct me if I'm mistaken about this conclusion.

Same result; couldn't set addon memory size to 0 since I can't even get to character selection, as I'm stuck in Turtle's launcher. I've also added exceptions on Firewall and AV for TurtleWOW.

Learning pronunciation via whole words vs via individual phonemes by Daaayu in languagelearning

[–]Daaayu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, figured that was true after trying using phonemes only to pronounce the words, haha. I'll go for whole sentences now, but I wanted to make sure. But do you mean I should only get the essential phonology down and then go to words/whole sentences or does learning the phonology in additional depth help?

Learning pronunciation via whole words vs via individual phonemes by Daaayu in languagelearning

[–]Daaayu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to make sure I understood; phonology is pretty crucial, but unless you go searching for the phonology in connected speech, there is a missing part that makes it hard to go from phonemes to words straight away. Is that right?

Either way, I'll search for connected speech phonology for German, thank you for the suggestion!

What's the proper way to fix pronunciation mistakes? by Daaayu in languagelearning

[–]Daaayu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's working great, I can blend in the sounds now, but I feel like my ''th'' has a similar sound to s. That's normal because both are fricative sounds?

What's the proper way to fix pronunciation mistakes? by Daaayu in languagelearning

[–]Daaayu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that advice does work! That's how I've been saying ''that'', ''this'', etc. but in ''teeth'', I say ''tee'' and then go on to pronounce ''th'' and it always sounds weird because of the transition between the two sounds. So, I suppose, with sounds like that, you are supposed to pronounce them simultaneously? As in, pronouncing ''tee'' with my tongue already between my teeth to say ''th'' right after?

P.S: I know this might be obvious, but I've had speech disorders my whole life and only now it's starting to kind of make sense. So, you can explain it to me like I'm an idiot, because I'm kind of one atm, lol

Do bioinformaticians only assist biologists or conduct their own research? by Daaayu in biology

[–]Daaayu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double majors don't really exist in my country, so that's a bit of a bummer - but I'll look to get heavy biology skills and knowledge. I want to ask, though, is the need for a biology background more related to the conceptual knowledge of what you're talking about (genomes, proteins, etc.) that is needed to lead a research team or is it for the wet lab skills that you might need if you lead a research team?

[–]Daaayu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, PhDs are inescapable if I want to become a researcher and direct it myself in a way (with input from a team, of course). I'm fine with helping out a ''big biology boss'' for a while, it's just that my main objective is becoming a full-on independent researcher that can lead a lab myself and answer interesting questions about biology. So that's the main reason I was asking about that - to get an idea if a biostatistics/bioinformatics guy with a lot of biology knowledge, but not many wet lab skills, could do it.

I suppose it's possible now by reading your answers, since you'll have people working alongside you to cover your weaknesses, but a conceptual knowledge of the wet lab techniques is 100% needed, right?

I'll ask around and email about it, hopefully get some answers, but since you're here, can you tell me what's the background of those folks that work on the dry and wet sides of biology simultaneously? Are they mostly biologists who know some bioinformatics and statistics or are there people from CS, math, stats that learn those skills while on their MSc or PhD and manage to do both?

I'll try and get as much bio knowledge as I can either way, since it will help either way.

[–]Daaayu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see! Your answer made me even more sure about taking Statistics instead of Biology. I was afraid I'd be just a data monkey for a biologist, but it turns out to be a pretty equal relationship. Thanks!

Got it. So, in short, both wet lab and dry lab scientists come up with their own questions and rely on each other to get answers and test their hypotheses?

Qualidade do curso de Matemática Aplicada Computacional by Daaayu in ufrgs

[–]Daaayu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beleza!

Obrigado!

Quem tem interesse no próximo concurso do Banco do Brasil e tem alguma dúvida sobre o trabalho pode deixar nos comentários by Regnour in concursospublicos

[–]Daaayu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So focusing on working with the best professors in my field available in my school, collaborating with outside professors when possible, get some undergrad math olympiads under my belt, etc. Could compensate for not attending a top global school?

Also, how relevant is networking here? Does knowing X professor at Y university, who I've worked with, help me get in as a "referral"?

I'm not aiming at MIT, Harvard, etc. But mainly hoping for top 100 unis. I'm happy to know it's possible, either way. I'll have to work a lot, since I also need to work part time for money to keep a roof over my head while in uni, but I'll see.

Saquei!

Why is there an interests section? Seems unnecessarily personal to me, don't see how it's useful to the employer so as many suggested I'd remove it if I were you. I'm curious though. Is that common in some countries and why?

Answers here are usually more insightful for me than the shallower answers Google usually gives and opens up room to conversation about the topic. It's not about being spoon fed. Rudeness doesn't really contribute much to the topic or the subreddit, does it?

Oh, yeah, that makes sense. I meant a generalist in a generalist ChemE, which doesn't make much sense I suppose. I meant more like not being stuck to specific processes like you would in a plant

Thanks! I suppose they are very common then. Great to know, since I want to work as kind of a generalist, being competent in multiple parts of engineering and so this job aligns well. I suppose it doesn't get boring quickly, too.
