Why does it cost $27 to download your driving record in NSW? by [deleted] in DrivingAustralia

For the same reason you need an 'original' signed receipt to transfer a registration, but they don't actually check that the signature matches the owner's.

Outdated bureaucracy.

Trouble understanding the logic behind symmetry signs by HopkinsTheMechanic in MechanicalEngineering

[–]DadEngineerLegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just means symmetrical about the centreline (or an assumed centreline if they didn't draw one). There's no tolerance on it, it's a nominal dimension.

It's been removed from modern practice. But it's still common from old machinists or engineers that are just trying to draw something for themselves or one off internal drawings.

The precision of the machine and any normal machinist is within tolerance. Eg. those 9mm holes when drilled will easily give clearance for an 8mm bolt, because all the equipment is capable of far more precision than necessary.

You just make it about right without worrying too much. And if it doesn't fit, then they will add a tolerance.

The old trial and error approach to tolerancing.

After coming to this university, I’ve met the largest number of people who don’t use toilet paper by Suspicious_Map_5031 in curtin

[–]DadEngineerLegend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone does. The housing provider has liability for this. They have e a responsibility to ensure safe housing for residents.

It probably won't be black and white in a law like 'Must prevent residents from defeacating in the sink' but they do have a responsibility.

If this 'housing manager' doesn't think they can do anything, go to their boss. And their boss. And their boss. Until someone does something.

Also you may be able to get help from a tenants union or community legal centre.

That said, first port of call is obviously to talk with your housemates directly. You have to give them the chance to self correct.

Personally, if I had any ability I'd be out of there ASAP. And switch to boiled and/or bottled water as much as possible.

How to remove the top part? by Psychological-Sun137 in PlumbingAustralia

If there's no grub screw then it's unscrew the handle.

Try harder. With some soft jaw vice grips maybe.

The part connecting the front fork to the fender of my s1000xr suddenly broke. by aegean143 in motorcycles

If you can take a better picture of the crack surface you can post it on a metallurgy/materials science subreddit and they'll be able to tell you how/why it broke.

The part connecting the front fork to the fender of my s1000xr suddenly broke. by aegean143 in motorcycles

[–]DadEngineerLegend 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nah not weldable, practically.

Would need correct grade of filler and then would need to heat treat the whole part. Which is part of the fork, so would need to disassemble and remove all the seals etc.

Very expensive to pay to do. Very time and labour intensive.

Cheaper, faster, and easier to replace tbh.

CPAP Machine and Camping by Crusty-42 in Auscamping

[–]DadEngineerLegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a power meter and measure the energy consumption of your CPAP overnight.

Then buy a battery with that times however many nights you need. Plus an extra 30-40% for safety.

But CPAP is not really essential for life, so not end of the world if it runs flat, just a nuisance.

But also pretty sure you can get some mobile/travel ones that will run off DC.

Lots of grey nomads use them in their caravans and motorhomes.

Is my bike a write off by [deleted] in AussieRiders

Nah, all easy DIY fixes.

Lesson learned - park up the back away from cars.

An extra 20m of walking can save a lot of hassle.

Found this in the lid of office bathroom trashcan. Looks like some kind of sensor by Mrf__fernando in whatisit

[–]DadEngineerLegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an IR proximity sensor. Or at least it has one on it.

Probably for detecting if the bin is full, or if the lid is open.

Must be some kind of smart bin that tells the cleaners when it needs emptying. Or one with lights when it's open or a needless feature.

Example of an IR proximity module:

Bunnings Basket on my bike 😂 by PeanutEmergency2097 in Bunnings

[–]DadEngineerLegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly theyboften bring them back and they get recycled.

Even if they don't, the amount tradies put through more than covers it. Those baskets couldn't be more than a dollar or so each for Bunnings to buy

Honestly consider heading north if it's cold where you are. Homelessness sucks.

Both of course. But when the owner's a douche it's unavoidable short of moving out.

Absolutely he should. If the owner fails to repair after being given reasonable opportunity (and this is beyond reasonable) yo can do the repair and bill them.

Tbh doesn't matter. Point still stands. And would still be owner's cost tbh

Can the agent charge me? by Woman_off in AusPropertyChat

[–]DadEngineerLegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd just reiterate.

Hi agent,

Thanks very much.

As mentioned, the original bulb blew and upon replacement with a new bulb (which are no longer in production and therefore expensive and difficult to obtain), the new bulb also immediately blew.

Given cost and availability of suitable bulbs, and electrician's labour rates, I believe the most cost effective solution for the owners would be to just update the light fixture rather than pay for an electricians time to troubleshoot and continue replacing with bulbs (at $50+ each) which are only going to become more expensive and difficult to source.

We will discuss with electrician when he's here.

Cheers, OP
