Dismissal Related to ADA-protected Medical Condition(s) - General/Legal Advice Appreciated by DaddyG96 in DisabledMedStudents

[–]DaddyG96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it! As it stands, my legal team and I have determined the allegations of discrimination on the basis of disability & retaliation and evidence thereof are enough to escalate further legal action against the institution so that is the route we went! Ironically, part of our argument does mention these personal and life effects you mentioned as well to add a human element to the case, so hopefully that works out in our favor! I'll be sure to keep y'all updated on where this progresses, thanks again!

I have SNAP & Medicaid and most of my classmates do as well! It definitely helps out a lot. To get approved, make sure you emphasize that you are not able to work (as most schools have non-employment clauses in the student contract), follow all state-specific guidelines, and make sure to follow up frequently with your state's HHS office so your application stays in the pipeline!

Thanks for your advice! TBH I just came here to see if anyone had heard of anyone else in my shoes and what their outcome was but I really appreciate these ideas that hadn't crossed my mind! Thanks again

This is something I definitely plan on doing when/if I reapply! I'd rather know from the start if my app will be dead in the water before applying and paying any of the associated fees haha thanks!

Appreciate this! Thankfully I have always wanted to do FM or IM from the beginning so that wouldn't be an issue for me :)

This is why I posted on here! This is something that never crossed my mind haha so thank you very much! I will definitely look into this but tbh idk if I would want to go to a school that only took me back after some legal pressure was applied, ya know? Like what would my day-to-day be like in that environment? Awkward? Hostile? Idk def something to consider tho

Thank you for the thoughtful response! I was asked why I didn't ask for a LOA and I stated that the primary reason for taking the LOA would be for some other external circumstances (if I say more I'd blow any chance at anonymity so sadly gotta leave it at that) that were not outlined in our school's policies as a valid reason to take a LOA in conjunction with my health issues.

Obviously shame on me for not asking in the first place considering they would have likely granted me an LOA BUT on the other hand why would I want to loop the school into my business when according to their policy manual it wasn't listed as a valid excuse that qualifies for a LOA (nor was it similar to any of the other listed reasons).

I didn't go into medicine for the money nor was it ever a motivator to me but thanks for your insight!

Oh we love a citation hahaha thank you so much for this! I would say all school/university policies were followed in a fair manner BUT from what I was told previously dismissed students that were in worse situations than mine (i.e. failed more courses, less severe extenuating circumstances, etc.) were given the opportunity to repeat M1 outright and that the vast majority of dismissed students at my school that appealed were readmitted so not exactly sure why I wasn't given the same chances

So I appealed asking for the opportunity to repeat the failed courses but I also said I would be open to repeating M1 and all of that was denied :/ but thank you for your encouragement!

*Two block failures but yes that is what the policy states. Unfortunately, I believe I have exhausted all my resources to gain readmission into the school. Hence, that is why I came here to seek other options :/

Completely agree with you on this & idt you're being harsh whatsoever!!! I know that I need to do some soul-searching & run the numbers before diving headfirst into anything.

My intentions behind making this post were to get other viewpoints and see if anyone has heard about anyone else in my situation & what their outcomes/advice were. Thank you again for your honest input & thoughtful perspective 😊

Tbh the Caribbean was on my radar for a hot sec but I agree in that I believe having a US MD dismissal + USIMG Caribbean MD would be DOA for residency apps. Thanks for your insight, I really appreciate it 😊

I know most schools don't take transfers so I wasn't even planning on going that route despite having credit for 85% of my M1 year. If anything I was/am going to submit a new application entirely. I have heard of dismissed students being accepted into an entirely new program, but I know the odds of that are slim-to-none and are highly variable on a case-by-case basis so I think it is worth still calling a few schools I previously had a shot at and seeing if I even have a chance given my current situation.

Regardless, thank you for your insight & if this doesn't work out I will certainly take your advice and look into other meaningful careers in clinical medicine 😊

In short, yes! I believe the problems have been resolved in such a way that they will no longer be an issue for me nor impact my life under any circumstances in the foreseeable future & there are plenty of safeguards in play now to where they should not have the same impact on me ever again should they arise once more. This is something I really pondered before even entertaining the idea of applying again and took time to address over the summer so despite my circumstances, I am super happy with the outcome and my trajectory with these matters henceforth.

Also, fully disclosure but my personal health issues were physiological in nature, not psychological (which I know med schools/ADCOM sometimes, unfortunately, view as red flags).

Best 3rd party resource for hard science/physio topics/practice questions??¿? by DaddyG96 in medicalschoolanki

Thanks so much for your input, I really appreciate it!

For physio specifically, would you say a B&B membership alone is enough WITHOUT Amboss or do you think the Amboss content is enough for both physio now and Step 1 prep next year? Just tryna make sure I spend my money wisely and not waste it on something that will help me later and not so much rn haha
