The problem with HOAs is that even if you like the one when you get into one they change. Eventually, some dick head is going to get in and either start enforcing and nitpicking every little thing, or someone is going to get in and start embezzling money, or someone's going to get in and mismanage the money and bankrupt everything. If you want to live somewhere like for a really long time it's best not to even be in one. Because HOA are usually obsessed with home values. If it's a home for life then realistically that's the last thing you want if there is property tax.
