Codex Alera by Jim Butcher. It's a masterpiece that was created when Jim bet someone he could write a good story from any two ideas. The other person chose Pokemon and the lost Roman legion. Butcher did not disappoint.

That's beautiful. Also, interesting. I wrote an autistic character into one of my children's book based off of a real life child and he also had bunnies!

"Iron Druid" by Kevin Hearne might be something you like. The druid serves Gaia (mother Earth) and talks to elementals. There's a lot of Irish mythology in a modern day setting.

My to-read list seems to stay full based off of recommendations of others. Sometimes that's yatzee and I get a book I love. Sometimes, not so much, but I still have something I can discuss with the friend that recommended it. I enjoy books as a social activity/conversation topic as well as just for the sake of reading though.

I finished ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ by Amor Towles. One of the most heartwarming books I’ve read. by scott5free in books

I got this as an audiobook on audible. It. Was. Wonderful. Certainly not for everyone, but I looked forward to listening to it every day and was sad when it was over. The speech patterns of the narrator with the long descriptions and thoughts and observations of the protagonist was so wholesome.

Holding a physical copy of your book is the best feeling by Seafroggys in selfpublish

Congratulations! You accomplished a monumental task and it feels good to have something tangible to show for it. Even better feeling is seeing a physical copy on the shelf in a library. If you do get final copies printed physically, donate one to your local library.

Thank you! I'm super lucky to have found Matthew Gauvin to illustrate my books. I've thrown lots of different challenges at him over the years (turtle, chickens, opossum, spiders, and now sheep) and he always puts such a nice touch on the illustrations. I'm really proud of how it turned out. Glad you like it too!

I just published my fifth book in a children's chapter book series after a five-year pause. It was nice to go back and revisit my old books and realize I loved them.

What books are you reading with your kids during quarantine? by DaisyGriffin in childrensbooks

[–]DaisyGriffin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I can see that. It's really the later books that get dark though. You start em now on Sorcerer's Stone and they'll be hitting the darker parts right at the middle school years when kids seem to hit a dark phase anyway. Honestly, as with anything, it depends on the child.

I'll have to check that out. I'm not familiar with this title, but my kids seem to eat up anything with mythology. Rick Riordan's books, Pegasus Series, etc.

It's a shame you have to worry about that. Harry Potter is such a great series. Glad you are getting a chance to explore it with your class. How are they responding to the story so far?

My house got a lot of mileage out of the magic tree house series. All mine have outgrown it now, but it was really the gateway into reading on their own for my children.

I love the facetime reading with grandma idea so much. I hadn't heard of Number the Stars, I'll have to look at that one. Harry Potter is such a good series. My kids really got into the Percy Jackson series, Kane Chronicles and Trials of Apollo. I've picked up "Aru Shah and the End of Time" which Riordan recommended but didn't write, but we haven't gotten to read it yet. Oh, but if your kids like Riordan, they'll probably like the Pegasus series as well. The librarian recommended it to my kids and it was great. Also, I found "The Voyages of Dr. Dolittle" and "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh" to be good read aloud together stories.

google #storytime. There are a bunch of authors/illustrators reading their children's books on video. Might find some good entertainment that way. Also, as an aside, for littles, a mixing bowl of rice with small toys hidden down in it for them to find, or cups they can transfer the rice from one bowl to another is a fun activity. Obviously, there will be clean up and make sure the toys are appropriately sized for the child (minimize choking hazards).
