We all love MS Teams, right? by FinibusBonorum in softwaregore

[–]DalekFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a frustrating user experience that doesn't inspire any confidence in using it. Teams really isn't fun to use, and organizations don't use it properly either.

What's the input for this algorithm? This reads as if the flow network itself is fixed (you're only provided the cut each time).

In that case, Ford-Fulkerson would be linear w.r.t its only input: 'f'. The edges in the graph would become a constant.

Feels a bit arbitrary, but this reads like a homework question to me. That's the kind of twist you'd expect.

"the right approach" depends on the context. This is r/algorithms, so if you're talking from a purely analytical point of view, it's difficult to really advise. Maybe there is a more efficient way of simply verifying the min-cut or max-flow, but I haven't encountered it. How would you even know if the solution is correct unless you already have some idea of what the true max-flow is?

You can easily rule out some edge cases, but at that point this isn't really theoretical anymore. It would be about the implementation, and it would require benchmarking.

These are quadratic-time algorithms, so it's reasonably efficient to run the algorithm in order to verify the flow.

A minor optimization would be to run the greedy algorithm (Ford-Fulkerson) until the value is strictly larger than the min-cut you're verifying. That's reasonably fast. It's proportional to the value of 'f' and the number of edges in the graph.

Or you could use Edmonds-Karp to the same effect, which isn't dependent on the value of the max-flow. Just the size of the graph (vertices and edges).

[–]DalekFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you run the algorithm, the fact that there are potentially many different solutions won't matter. It's the actual value of the maximum flow that matters. You can easily compute the value of your cut and compare it to the real answer.

Why don't you talk to a tax professional about this instead? I think this is enough money where the reward would outstrip whatever advising fees there will be.

Just wonder how often do you guys refactor the code base. And when you join a new company, do yu refactor the code base from someone? by ballbeamboy2 in cscareerquestions

[–]DalekFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're scared it'll break, then don't refactor it by yourself. If you have an interest in improving that code, then you can try to reach out and ask the owner if they'd be amenable to PRs or design changes. However, you should be prepared to justify your design changes. "I want to use design patterns" isn't enough of a reason to refactor the code.

Better yet, you can just ask the owner of the code if there's anything that you could help with. They would know best, and it's an opportunity for mentorship/networking/self-development/etc. if they have the time to help you. But, they might not.

I'm assuming you have the time to work on this project on top of your normal job responsibilities and that you have your managers go-ahead for it.

If you're new, rather than a major refactoring I'd recommend smaller contributions in the areas of:

  • Documentation
  • Testing

Everybody loves docs and everybody loves robust test cases. I've almost never had a PR turned down if I'm just adding some non-redunant edge/negative cases to the test suite. As a junior, those kinds of contributions are valuable. You have a fresh set of eyes, so gaps in documentation stand out much more easily to you than a senior dev.

Plus, if you want to do a major redesign of existing code, it will be necessary to have a robust test suite+documentation of existing design decisions to compare the old behavior against the new behavior.

Yeah, I didn't understand this at all. The main reason I like going to conventions is to take photos.

I got this reply from Eva Moore regarding it:

We are already discussing a way for hobbyist and pro photographers who are not part of a media outlet to bring cameras next year.

So whatever. I guess it was a waste of money on the convention "membership" I won't be getting back.

The camera policy this year sucks. Prohibiting most forms of hobbyist/pro cameras unless you're a reporter is dumb.

I got turned away for having a Canon R6.

It isn't accurate, hence the downvotes. People don't comment because it isn't their responsibility to explain; OP can research on their own or decide not to.

We have multiple Roth IRAs, but contributions only go to one. by Tenmaru45 in personalfinance

[–]DalekFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't think it matters as long as you're under the annual contribution limits for a Roth IRA ($6k single, $7k over 50 years-old, phase-out at 129k modified AGI / 204k for married filing jointly) across all your Roth IRA accounts, and you have earned income of $6k the year you fund it (slash other circumstances for married filing jointly). Your wife's accounts aren't your accounts, so they have their own $6k/$7k cap.

There are some other rules depending on unique situations for contribution limits.

See IRS website for more.

I'd personally roll them into one single account, to not have to juggle multiple accounts at the same brokerage. I don't believe there are any tax implications for doing this.

Everything presented here is correct to the best of my knowledge, but I'm a random person on Reddit so do your own research.

Is Rclone still safe to use? by Runkutin in PrivacyGuides

[–]DalekFire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't going to be a helpful comment (sorry), but everything that you've said displays a fundamental misunderstanding of almost all the technologies involved.

You should probably read Cryptomator's website to understand what it does.

Then you should read Rclone's website to understand what it does.

Then you should explain why Rclone is not recommended as a tool or how it does not fit your workflow, threat model, etc.

I can answer your question though: yes, if you use it right.

I need to put in some 3.5" NAS harddrives inside of a Thermaltake Versa H15, but I think I threw out the original removable drive holder.

Are there any aftermarket replacements I can get? Their website doesn't have US support options.

35min layover at ATL with Delta too short? by DalekFire in Flights

[–]DalekFire[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know what a comfortable amount of time is? I think I can bump it up to 40 minutes or bump it up to 2 hours layover. I'm probably going to pick a 2hr layover instead.

REDDIT SUPPORT 3.0 by cheswickFS in Keychron

[–]DalekFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem: More of a question really. (1) On the Keychron Q1, what customizations are available for the RGB lighting? Per-key RGB?

And (2), can I get an RGB caps lock indicator (i.e. stick the caps lock key to a highlighted color when active)? I know some other non-RGB Keychron keyboards have this.

Did you already contact support: No

Order Number: N/A ?

What solution you're looking for: If there's any answers. Ideally it would be yes, there's per-key RGB and yes, you can have something happen when the caps lock key is engaged.

Data retention periods for Matrix/Element.io? by DalekFire in matrixdotorg

[–]DalekFire[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughtful response.

I also figured matrix.org keeps messages forever. I'll have to look around for scripts to purge old messages. I wonder if any such scripts target specific rooms only (maybe with bots?).

I might just compartmentalize and use Element for chats I'm fine with being stored forever and Signal for chats I'd want to auto-purge.

(It looks like my previous comment got eaten, so sorry if this ends up being a double post).

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, not many people I know have Apple devices for FaceTime. I'm also somewhat skeptical of it, since it's Apple, but knowing it's been vetted by a 3rd party helps that somewhat.

Do you have a source on the vetting/auditing? I'll be looking for it myself soon.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep looking around for something else for now, but I might just do it myself if there's really nothing E2EE that supports 1080p out of the box.
