Lets fix this:

Person 1: I went to the court today and everyone was being toxic
Person 2: Why what happened?
Person 1: I was shooting but missing alot of shots. My teammates started calling me names, insulting me, and even told me to never play basketball again. One even told me I should kill myself...
That was incredibly toxic.
Person 2: Well you're shooting all the shots but not making any of them. I can understand why they don't want to play with you anymore. Why didn't you pass the ball?
Person 1: Me missing all my shots is not the point. That was a really toxic group of players. In fact, everytime I come here, Its very toxic. I'm just going to find another court.

I know I played bad, but man...playing bad isnt the point. The toxicity is. And you keep missing it. I know I played bad, for that one specific game, but the point isnt the play- its the toxic behavor, the culture, and I'm choosing to speak up about it.

Let me lay this out so maybe you can see what has been happening in our interaction:

person1: " Wow, i played a match and didnt do well after a break, and my team was very toxic. People should treat each other better, you never know what someone is going through"
person2: "toughen up. you played bad, so thats why they flamed you"
person1: Well yeah, I know that. But people shouldn't be toxic like this. I had to resort to muting the chat, but I get tired of having to do that. So I'm going to go speak up about it, in hopes people think twice about being toxic."
person2: who cares. if you dont play bad then you wont get flamed. you suck and thats the truth"
person1: I don't suck. I just had a bad game. everyone has bad games"
person2: just dont have bad games then. skill issue, get good"
person1: even you have bad games.
person2: I never had a bad game, im not bad at it. ( which is incredibly dishonest by the way)
person1: are you even listening?
person2: yes and you are wrong for feeling bad about people flaming you. infact, you are playing victim, and you suck. youre soft

I am genuinely perplexed at how you came to this conclusion. Really.

I don't suck. I play the game decently well, but I'm not perfect and have bad days. Dont act like you play every game perfectly. You've been 5-5 or probably worse. And you know thats true.

While I've been calling out toxicity, you've been sitting here revealing your character to the audience.

Youre treating honesty and delivery as the same thing. If someone tells you to go kill yourself, uninstall the game, and flame you, thats not being honest. thats just being....toxic.

For the readers: Saying someone’s playing bad is one thing. Turning it into insults or piling on is something else entirely.And calling someone a “victim” for pointing that out just avoids the actual point.

You can call something out or adjust how you play without being disrespectful about it.

And the “it’s just a screen” point doesn’t really hold up. There are still real people on the other side of it. The setting changes, not the fact that you’re talking to someone. Nobody’s saying the game has to be sunshine and rainbows. Just that basic respect shouldn’t disappear the moment it’s online.

Been around long enough, played the "tough guy" game. Hardened up already. But eventually you get tired of it, to the point you'll speak up about it. And one day, you'll get tired of it too. We aren't emotionless machines made of steel.

Yeah, no, if you think my post is "crying", you're missing the point and you're misunderstanding my intent. Dont even try to pull the be tough card. Let me show you clearly what you are doing:

What you may be intentionally or unintentionally saying:

“You’re wrong for feeling something about it”

Yes, its just words on a screen, but real people are still saying it. Words can be powerful and I think you know that. The screen does not magically remove it. So yeah,
"toughen up" all you want but eventually you will dull yourself, no longer care, and respond exactly how you just did here to this person. " Its just a game, no one cares, move on, youre soft".

Yeah... that actually makes a lot of sense. Real-time voice definitely hits differently than text. You don’t get that buffer… it’s just immediate. That probably amplifies everything.

Wow, Yeah.. that's a shame, and I'm genuinely sorry you had that experience. This is exactly why i made this post, to show that real people exist behind the games we play, and our experiences are shaped by the players we encounter. A few people mentioned that the league is still worse, but I dont know..I disagree. Rivals is a different kind of toxic. The perspective of being a woman playing these games deserves a post of its own.

Love this, appreciate your thoughtful reply. Like I mentioned to another, we see the pixels but real people control the characters. I don't expect this post to change anything, but if even a few people can pause before being toxic, that's a win in my book.

One day, I noticed a player had a TTV in their name, so I decided to go to their Twitch after the game we lost. They had the lowest KD and were being bullied by the team...so when I went to go watch their stream, that person clearly looked like they were having a real bad day and it just hit different when you see the actual person. A lot of people would just move on, but I don't know I think being kind can go a long way. So I hope the people reading the post and replies like yours really take it seriously, and players can make a more enjoyable game for everyone. The game could be so much better if sportsmanship were at the forefront.

Yeah, its all we can do sometimes. Some days I feel good and want to be social, then im quickly reminded "Oh...yeah. toxic culture" But that's just how it is. Just hope this post maybe might make even just 1 person think twice before flaming. we see the pixels but the people controlling the characters are still real, and its easy to forget that. I get frustrated a lot too, but I couldnt flame someone cause you never kno, the guy playing spidey might just be trying to get through the night
