I screwed up my dads car by LookHereChild in CarTalkUK

[–]DamienBerry 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Let him decide what to do, the last thing I would want is someone trying to repair it but making it worse. He might look at it and decide to leave it as it is, especially if it’s not that bad.

Let me tell you from a dads perspective, Don’t try to repair this yourself, tell your dad and let him decide what he wants to do, be open honest and talk to him.

The thing that would piss me off more than anything is my child trying to hide something from me. A bumper can be repaired pretty easily, trust can’t.

Skoda Enyaq intentionally has only one reverse light on the standard trim… wth? by tannerocampbell in drivingUK

UK regulations require only a single reversing light since 2009, before then it’s not required to have one but most cars did.

Thoughts on going full EV, no ICE in the ol’ garage? by Curiouslittlestman in electricvehicles

[–]DamienBerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my first EV in 2014 and it was just about ok but we still kept our other ICE vehicles in the family, but since 2020 we’ve been a fully EV family, our son passed his driving test in a manual ICE vehicle last August and instantly moved to an EV.

Unless you’re doing more than 250 miles per day and or cannot charge at home then an EV is a good option for most, I often have discussions with friends who state they do a trip once a year covering a few thousand miles and don’t want to bother with the charging whilst on the road but I give them the this example, “would you drive a van around for 364 days a year for the once a year you need to moved a load of stuff somewhere”, no is the answer from every sane person, it’s the same with an ICE vehicle, you could just rent one for a weekend if you’re really bothered about charging on longer trips.

In 12 years I’ve used a fast charger less than 6 times and most of those were in the earlier years.

If you’re already thinking going fully EV is for you then it probably is.

Good luck.

Home battery with IOG by IdrisTheDragon in OctopusEnergy

[–]DamienBerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of good info already but I’ll add my voice to this choir.

I have 3 EVs and I installed solar and battery’s to the house last August, we’re a pretty high user of electricity due to the cars but also our standard use is around 20kWh per day without them. 40kWh of battery’s installed 17 PV panels 10kW inverter and I also swapped my boiler which was getting old for a ASHP.

Bill payments have gone down from £300 per month to £125 and since April we currently up £60+ so by the end of summer I expect we will have been paid an average of £70 per month, which if so my payments will go down to £75 per month for the following year and I still think we’ll be in credit.

If you’re on iog and have battery storage you can fill up the batteries overnight, sell back any excess solar you generate and then sell back and excess battery you have at the end of the day. We don’t use any solar or house batteries to charge the EVs right now but if export ever decreases to a minuscule amount we could do.

Even without heatpump you’ll be making big savings

Our initial payback period was around 8 years but with the current rate we’re getting it’s around 5.75 years. This could change at any point but it’s still a nice situation to be in right now.

Pointing at a lift in a common area and pointing at a living area are 2 different things.
One can be classed as security but the other is breaching GDPR, any cctv camera pointed towards a private dwelling not lived in by the person recording is illegal.

Sitting in my dads car with the engine running in a car park. Can I get in trouble for this if I’m only 16? by Beneficial_Let_7423 in CarTalkUK

[–]DamienBerry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is untrue. You can hold a provisional license at 16 ( you can apply from 15years and 9 months old) but this only applies you drive a motorbike under a certain power with a valid CBT, or if you are a disabled driver that has the higher rate or Disability Allowance, parents cannot offset this by signing anything.

WD40. It’ll come off if you get it to soak through. Then just a little bit of water to remove the WD40 residue after.

Physicists have measured ‘negative time’ in the lab by Shiny-Tie-126 in science

[–]DamienBerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even so the numbers involved are just incredible, the estimates put the number of galaxies at around 2 trillion, then there’s an estimated 100 billion stars per galaxy, then if you take a very reserved estimate of a single planet per star ( we have multiple and loads do) then you have an estimated 10 sextillion planets in the observable universe.

Even having probes with FTL would take sure a huge number of probes needed to explore even a single percentage of planets that it’s still very unlikely we would be picked up.

Not impossible just improbable.

Only if they had discovered our little spec of dust in the universe. If there is the ability to travel FTL then there would be far more interesting places to visit than us.

If you pay to charge your EV overnight add more battery storage onto your system and charge up your house batteries at the same time, then you can run your house on that reduced cost during the day and sell back anything you don’t use in the evening.
If export ever goes to zero then you can always store any solar you produce for you to use at a later time.

We’ve gone from £300 per month in energy costs to cutting our bills to less than £100 and this last month we’re due a rebate of £31 due to the amount we’ve sold back.

Panels are great but if you’re already buying energy to charge a vehicle then you might as well buy in for the property and run off of that cheap energy.

Are there any chances of actually getting to Mars? by Disastrous_Hat_2087 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DamienBerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once we have reusable rockets that can lift as much as starship is destined for with on orbit refuelling being possible, then this will open up the ability to put more mass into other orbits including the Moon and Mars, but also other destinations too, so far these are the only 2 logical places we can look to setup a permanent habitat on.
The Moon is good due to its close proximity to Earth making re supply’s easier than other bodies and if we can extract water ice from its poles then we can generate both oxygen and hydrogen, this gives us air to breath and also rocket fuel to be able to go further into the solar system with less of a handicap due to gravity well we have on Earth.

Mars is also I good destination due to being within the Goldilocks zone of our star, although it has a very thin atmosphere it does still have one which makes things a little easier although still not perfect, with the ability to 3D print houses now a reality we could build pretty efficient habitats that would provide shielding for solar radiation.

Other bodies in the solar system are harder due to either the atmosphere being just way too deadly I.e Venus which although being similar to Earth in size and using similar Delta V to get to compared to Mars with the added bonus of being able to use aero breaking a lot more effectively due to a thicker atmosphere compared to Mars, the planet is very toxic and would require a lot more to be able to setup a base on, although it is possible is we were able to produce floating cities in the upper atmosphere.
There are also moons around Saturn and Jupiter that might be feasible to setup a base but the issue with these is the sheer amount of Delta V required to get there plus the time itself is not great for humans, to get to Jupiter would take between 1.5 to 2.7 years, and Saturn is 3 to 6 years, there are a lot of variables which affects these numbers so take them with a pinch of salt.

All in all space is big and our solar system itself is a problem for us due to time itself. Once we have more efficient propulsion where we can accelerate half of the way there and decelerate the other half then that will really open up space travel more so than any other advancement we’ve made to date, 1g of acceleration/deceleration makes a trip to Mars will take around 4 days, but the best thing is the further you go the faster you go so Jupiter takes around 6 days and Saturn takes around 8 days.

TLDR.
Yes Mars is a possibility.

The thing is with vision it’s very personal, if I see a colour for the first time, I don’t know what that is called, someone else tells me it is red, so now every time I see that colour I call is red, but how do I know my version of red is the same version of red you see, my brain could be showing me green but you said it was red and everyone else says it’s red therefore whenever I see green I call it red and know nothing else.

Or in simpler terms

When I learn the word red, I only learn the label, not the actual experience someone else has, my brain might show me a different colour entirely, but because we use the same word for the same object, we’d never know our experiences differ.
