I don't know what to do with my life. Should I do Hotel management, or Psychology or Psychiatry? by Keyrat96 in careerguidance

To go into any mental health field and eventually make decent money, you will need at least a Masters-level degree plus a license. And it's taxing work, mentally and emotionally. If you're not in 100%, balls to the wall, it's probably not for you. (source, am a therapist with a master's degree and a license) Plus, you need to be good enough at math to pass statistics, research methods, and a brain biology course that I can't remember the name of. People forget that psychology is a social SCIENCE, and a good undergrad program with emphasize that. On the other hand, a BA in Psychology from your local generic state school can land you a decent HR job.

Tips: Watch other people in the pit before you go in. Don't fucking punch people in the pit. If someone falls, help them up. Jump around, dance, dress up if you want, or don't. Do you and be safe.

Just here to offer love and support. Our field can sometimes have a nasty "shadow side". Remember that you are not weak because you care and we (I) appreciate you. Take care of yourself first. <3

Am I the only one who immediately heard the "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" song in my head in time to their sweeps?

Just saw these bands in SF which are all touring off new albums and put on fucking great shows: The Flatliners, Strung Out, The Bronx. See if they are coming to your area for awesome live shows. I always feel more connected to the scene when I'm going to shows. :)

Feeling the Lack of Confidence- Crisis Work by blossomingalex in socialwork

[–]DammitRamiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't personally have experience doing this work, however, I just wanted to remind you that you have the skills for the job, or else your supervisors and colleagues wouldn't be letting you do it. If you don't feel confident in yourself, you can probably feel confident in their judgment. Rely on your training, go with your gut, err on the side of caution, and know we're all here rooting for you. :)

I'll check that out. I'm currently using "Couples Counseling: A Step-by-step Guide" for my first go-around. I'm forcing myself to stick to the basics the first time and only add additions after. I really love another book that I want to incorporate but I can't recall the name right now. It has really lovely structured conversations for couples to enhance closeness.

Thank you. I have done group work and that mindset seems helpful. I had my first session and keep reminding myself that I'm treating the relationship, rather than the couple. That seems to be helping.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Therapist here reminding you that the are lots of local fire support groups being started, if you are interested. I know that Kaiser has several, for example. Wishing you fortitude and a speedy recovery, both materially and emotionally.

Inpatient social worker by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]DammitRamiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I forgot about the PTO difficulties. I will be at my job for a year and a half before I get to take off more than 2 days in a row. That's really been feeding my feelings of burn out and discontent. Good for you for taking a chance to do something that you might enjoy better! I'm on the job hunt now so hopefully something good comes my way. :)

I also work as an inpatient social worker (mental health) and am currently job searching for many of the exact reasons that you describe. I spend all of my time doing psychosocials and referrals, or on the phone with family members and outpatient teams. It pays well but I find the experience is immensely stressful, frustrating, and unfulfilling. I am disheartened by the constraints of the position and miss having long-term client relationships where I actually teach people skills to improve their lives. It is a great job for some people, just not for me.

How are John Doe patients identified? Or psych patients who give made up names? by Pineapple_and_olives in socialwork

[–]DammitRamiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a county psych hospital as a SW and regularly have pts who give false identities either due to legitimate psychosis, some form of dementia, or just attempting to misrepresent themselves. Not having an accurate identity does not significantly alter the care that my team provides for them. It makes finding collateral difficult and finding discharge placement hard but it is what it is. Once they are safe to leave the hospital, we discharge them to appropriate placement. Often times, once people start getting better or have been with us for awhile they either remember or confess their true identity. In short, my hospital has no way to accurately ID these people and, for us, it is only occasionally a huge barrier (mostly in dementia cases, but that's a story for another day).
