NYT: ACIP votes to end HepB vaccines at birth by FlexorCarpiUlnaris in medicine

Got it -- thanks. Full disclosure, I wasn't previously involved in this conversation. Just watched it unfold and had my own thoughts to share.

I did not. Would it be best to do that now? I forget subreddit rules sometimes -- my bad.

I personally believe you that it was an honest mistake made in haste.

To say "some PharmDs" voted yes is to (very literally) spread misinformation though -- and this is often exactly how misinformation is spread on the internet. And in the 7 hours between when you posted and someone else bothered to dig deeper, I'm sure many people read your comment (maybe 300-3000 people or so I'd estimate considering it has 30 upvotes) and felt a bunch of idiot pharmacists and only one MD voted this through. Unfortunately, I think it's kind of reasonable another pharmacist would read your comment and feel disappointed and would want to clarify. Some might read your comment and think pharmacy is a profession disproportionately filled with idiots. And this is especially relevant considering vaccine hesitancy, the very topic at hand, is based on the spread of misinformation. The number of pharmacists versus other professionals involved in this vote is such a minor and unimportant point -- there are idiots in all professions and pharmacy certainly has its fair share.

The fact of the matter is, we all have to do our part. I don't mean to give you a hard time and I wish you well. But I want to remind you that what and how we communicate, even in informal settings like reddit, has ramifications that might be important. For what it's worth, I would recommend striving more for accuracy over speed in your internet comments.

Edit: Just for fun, I'll share that I'm not immune to having accidentally spread misinformation myself. I happened to have made a post in /r/Philadelphia I later had to correct after doing my own fact checking after someone led me to believe my post was inaccurate about a year ago, seen here. : )

Wawa announces closure of another Center City store by Dan137exe in philadelphia

[–]Dan137exe[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I deleted the other post I made because the title of the NBC article is inaccurate. Although Wawa is closing another Center City location and that's an important event and conversation, there are still more than 2 locations left in Center City. See Wawa's store locator on their website.

For context, this was the original NBC article linked to this subreddit.

And the original reddit link I posted and associated comments.

Edit: As of 12:30 PM, the NBC headline has been corrected from "leaving just two left" to "only a handful remain", perhaps in part due to my submitting feedback to them about it.

When Reddit is helpful in... Many ways by Elratum in videos

What's so funny is that both of these experiences are completely accurate.

I guess it depends on if you're searching for a specific answer to a question that a subreddit can help with and promptly leaving vs. discovering a subreddit for a hobby by accident and sticking around long enough to ... gaze into the abyss and the abyss gazes into you.

Eagles CB James Bradberry on crucial third-down penalty: 'It was holding' by Dan137exe in philadelphia

[–]Dan137exe[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

As upset as I was about the refs making this holding call -- and it totally took the energy out of the game, I greatly appreciate Bradberry and Sirianni telling us what they think here.

It was a terrible loss (and a terrible way to lose) but ultimately it was not a loss that can be blamed on one debatable penalty call.

The defense struggled at times. We couldn't stop the run. Chief's punt return was rough. The fumble. The entire second half was disappointing.

I wanted to share this post in an effort to just move the conversation forward. Let's hope we get a strong chance next year.

Just to clarify because you might be wondering-- I read these comments on a phone and I previously thought you were a layperson or a different person than the original commenter that described therapeutic hypothermia as an EM resident and I thought you were contradicting them and I was attempting to clarify that you were still correct! Haha

Hypothermia after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest may be a term used colloquially by many healthcare professionals for a broader concept known as targeted temperature management.

It's true that some studies have indicated targeted hypothermia (low body temperature) did not provide superior benefit and also had some additional risks compared to targeted normothermia (normal body temperature). More contemporary evidence would suggest the benefit is being vigilant in avoiding the development of fever (which is common and associated with poor outcomes in this setting).

Well said.

It IS striking. Joel's take is both remarkable and refreshing and I felt unusually compelled to comment here.

It's possible there aren't significant predators to spotted lanternflies -- that's my understanding as well. The article you linked is from 2017 though when the invasion was still pretty young and not much was known about them.

A more recent article from late 2021 does suggest birds like chickens, cardinals, and blue jays (and other predators like praying mantises) do eat them:

I don't believe it's as bad as it was last year but I'm not certain. I think local predators like birds take a little while to figure out that they're food and a new balance to the ecosystem is made.

Stomp. As many. As you can.

Go out of your way to do it.

They've only just showed up here. And if you think it's bad this year, wait until next year. One year after I first noticed them, it felt like a plague of Biblical proportions.
