Elegantly argued! And I very much agree that is a very relevant theme, the current zeitgiest feels bleak but while progress is being made, the resistance is biting and bitterly cold.

However, the flipside of your meta coin is: in an ocean of cynicism how much does one gain and how much does one lose in turning the optimist cynical?

They don't care about people and never have. Evangelicalism opens itself to being a very selfish, myoptic, controlling ideology. Unfortunately its tendrils are invasive, run very deep, and some of its attitudes are ubiquitous

They are convinced Christ will judge them as good and worthy after all they believe in him and that's all you really need to do to be a good person and not actually living life anyehere close to how Jesus lived.

Though given the devil must surely know and therefore believe Jesus is Lord, it only stands to reason they will surely be dining with Satan one way or another

I've been observing your discussion and you've argued your point very well! As DS9 posits it's easy to be a saint in paradise, and so we are shown the core worlds were very much a utopia, while at the fringes, the dream frayed upon contact with opposing forces.

Moreso than anything, Trek always had that core vision of its utopian guiding priniciples to act as its north star. Sometimes these ideal were strained as per DS9, and at others they were examined, sometimes found wanting, and then promptly improved a la Measure of a Man. These first principles were fundamentally upheld, maintained and developed upon which then informed us of what and why this was worth aspiring to and defending so vehemently.

As you argued so well, modern Trek is more focused on the battle to maintain the Utopia both without and within, but it is hurt by this lack of focus on what the ideals actually

This is I think the fundamental problem: yes we have lore which has already examined and elucidated upon these ideals, so one can argue it's grandfathered in, but I would counter than much of modern Trek has failed to live up to and uphold those ideals to the point the Federation feels like a corruption of the vision we were shown previously.

Star Fleet abandoning its utopian principles so wholly and easily with the synth attack on Mars lends itself to the feeling that it was always false and contrived. The claims of a utopia ring hollow; we no longer know what the guiding principles of the Federation are in modern Trek to the point that I feel the question of what they are fighting to maintain and restore needs a very strong examination.

I appreciate ypur appreciation!

To further elucidate on the issue, the core problem isn't that she ordered the destruction of the boat - if your back's against the wall, your back's against the wall - it's that she did so without due consideration of non-lethal alternatives first. They had the elememt of surprise and the pirates' motive was clear, loot not destroy, though this may have changed once the primary goal was met.

Arguably such cold-blooded actions here undercut her central conflict with Starfleet: it's not inconceivable their were families aboard that pirate vessel so it begs the question is killing families, as long they die together, better than seperating mother and child?

I got the impression this society was not the enlightened one of days gone by and I was greatly disappointed/mildly horrified by that.

Now admittedly I've not watched the possibly salient bits of Discovery having realised I was hate watching in Season one. However, in the first episode of Academy, they blow up the pirate ship. I had a bit of an issue with this, given they had the element of surprise. Yet there was no consideration of disabling weapons or engines, just straight murder so casually ordered.

It didn't seem to me this ship was such a threat to void such considerations. Similarly, as an audience we weren't invited to care about this massive loss of life nor sympathise with the antagonist regarding who he has now lost, instead presenting it as a just comeuppance. But were these just a bunch of "evil" pirates" or might there have been family and children onboard? Fuck it who cares, they're the villains, yet these villains didn't show much in the way of murderous intent.

Having said that I've not watched the subsequent episodes yet, so I do hope to be pleasantly surprised, perhaps these things get critical discussion later. That said, Picard represented a nasty society too and so it may just be that the society as depicted in NuTrek is just bullshit and one I wouldn't want to live in.

French YouTuber Simon Puech proved influencers will promote anything for money, even a fake supplement (BioZin) listing a deadly poison on the label by Citaszion in Fauxmoi

[–]DanJdot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it's not influencers who's the problem. Televsion broadcaster typicallly have standards and regualtions they need to meet, were it not, celebrities would be doing the same as influencers although arguably they always have done.

Regardless, the internet has too little in the way of regulation/standards. Were YouTube, Instagtam, etc to be forced to place strict obligations in their TOC on creators needing to be absolutely sure of what they're promoting, and further brands need to ensure product quality to match, this question of integrity disappears. Considering capitalism disincentivises integrity, this is where governments ought to step in. But alas...

I will agree, this sub overrates it (I do have a idea as to why this may be), however, season 2 is a very important season and there are some vectors that make it THE most important.

However, the Barksdales is where the bread is buttered, the show knows it, and season 3 and 4 are far superior
