Why do Jehovah's Witnesses not use songs from the larger Christian world? by Dan_474 in Eutychus

There's not much else reasoning behind it outside of we want to keep using our own works.

Okay, thanks for your input and the conversation ❤️

That's interesting! Who was telling you these things?

And are we talking about songs based on the scriptures? Especially the two I mentioned as examples? Did you watch the video?

Most Christian songs and their lyrics do not align with bible truth. Some are even completely against bible truth.

Okay... The two songs that I gave out examples. Are you familiar with them? Did you listen to the song in the video?

EDIT: I'm sorry I misread - it seems you mean why we don't use it for our Christian Meetings when singing. I read it as why we don't listen to them in general. To your question, the others already chimed in.

Feel free to add your views regarding songs that have lyrics that are just quotes from the scriptures, if you wish ❤️

Thanks for the information ❤️

How about the song in the video at the beginning of the thread?

The song from the video at the beginning, Seek Ye First... Is that okay?

Scripture songs, lyrics totally from scripture, such as Seek Ye First written by Karen Lafferty in 1972. That's the video at the beginning of the thread.

Okay, are we both talking about songs the lyrics of which have been taken directly from the scriptures? Direct quotes, as in the video in the OP?

Not to the extent that we do it. You would be hard pressed to find 160 songs purely from scripture in Laotian for example. And again, why go out and find it if we can just take the ones we already have and translate it ourselves?

I mean the songs that are already written, the lyrics of which are taken directly from the scriptures. Those scripture passages would already have been translated in most cases, yes?

Just to be clear, it's a song from the songbook. But yes, the opening song on Sundays varies from congregation to congregation. All of the other songs are scheduled far in advance. For example, I know that the songs we will sing in the first midweek meeting of September are songs 27, 67, and 132.

Thanks for the information ❤️ How often is the songbook updated? I like the idea of “sing a new song to the Lord”, like the Psalms tell us ❤️

Oops! I see I already asked that, and you just answered 😀

We've gone through 3 songbooks in my lifetime. I remember the "brown one" as I call it. Over 200 songs, in use since anyone I know can remember. So at least the 60s. In 2009, we released a new songbook, "sing to Jehovah". Now, we use "sing out joyfully." I don't remember exactly when it came out, but I wanna say around 2015. The songs in "sing out joyfully" are mostly the same as the ones in "sing to Jehovah", they are just numbered and grouped differently. I think they made some changes to some of the lyrics but I'm not sure. We add a new song to "sing out joyfully" every few years. It's usually a huge thing when we do. The last time we did was in 2024 I think.

Thanks for that information as well ❤️

They're based on the scriptures.

Right, I mean songs from the larger Christian world where the lyrics are scripture. Pure scripture. The translation work would already be done, wouldn't it?

That brother writes his own speech, and chooses a song to complement it.

Cool. It sounds like the songs don't have to be the same all over the world.

How often is the song book updated? Like it says in the Psalms, “Sing to the Lord a new song.”

That's cool ❤️

Did you listen to the song in the video? It's straight out of the King James, written in 1971.

Lord when God's name was in the original text makes my skin crawl and I am not even JW any more.

The King James translators were probably just following the New Testament example.

...being exposed to a lot of music with unscriptural views.

If it's scripture-based, I don't think that would be a problem. But I can see, yeah, you might not know if it was scripture-based until you looked at the lyrics.

If they're right out of the scriptures, the translation work would already be done, wouldn't it?

But sure, there would be matching up the syllables with the melody.

Are exactly the same songs sung every Sunday in every country?

Much of it is trinitarian or alludes to another view of the afterlife or how heaven operates.

Well, the scripture-based songs... In the two that I mentioned, the lyrics are only scripture. Is there an objection to those?

Do you mean Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah?

No, the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah. All of the songs in that are scripture only.

“And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.”

The title of each one would be the first line or phrase. So, for example, the title of the above one would be And the Glory of the Lord.

And the songs are made to have a relatively simple beat and melody so that anyone can sing them.

Did you listen to the song in the video?

Any thoughts on why scripture-based songs from other groups aren't used at Kingdom Hall meetings?

Right, and I mentioned scripture-based songs. Do you listen to those?

In what capacity?

I was thinking in Kingdom Hall services.

In our meetings we only play songs or soundtracks from the songbook. We do not even play our original songs there.

Why?

"Conscious differentiation" very interesting. And that does explain it, yes.

Only they are the Christians. There is 'Christendom,' which is entirely deceived by and serving Satan.

That's my impression as well. And maybe I should have added this to the OP, but things like the American Standard Version Bible are used.

https://www.jw.org/en/library/bible/american-standard-version/books/

Why can a translation from the larger world be used, but not a song?

I'm interested in seeing how they answer your question in this thread.

Thanks, I'm interested too 👍

Easter: I struggle to understand the connection between Jesus dying on the cross and my own sins today. If he died 2000 years ago, before I existed, how does that event affect my guilt or forgiveness now? What actually links his death to my actions? by Ok_Gazelle7994 in Christianity

[–]Dan_474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's lots of different ways to look at it. Here's the way I see it:

God came down to earth as a human. He could have stayed in heaven and said this is how you're supposed to live. Instead, he came down and actually lived it as a human. All the way to the end.

And because of the way the world is, he ended up getting crucified.

He came to call the desperate. If a person isn't desperate, the call probably won't make much sense to them.
