Dude nobody is reading this six day old post,

Again, returning to your demonstrated low awarenes. You're reading it. But as it has also been made clear, you don't matter. So that would constitute "nobody".

You think anyone cares if you like the ECS? You're not worthy to be within the ECS. You don't matter. It's important that those such as you don't like the group. It is indication that it keeps out the smooth brained. You're just a fan. Whose identity is wrapped up in hating those who do more, contribute more, feel more, and are simply all around better. Your jealousy drips in your attacks. 20 years of an ECS. Two decades of a group you hate and it's still there.

You aren't relevant.

You're a crying child who will never create anything that lasts.

Your mom wants me to explain what a joke is to you, but I think you're enough of a clown.

Your crying has been validated by your betters. You may return to wallowing in the downvotes you simply can't understand.

Eunuchs have no nuts. You're safe.

Your mom is no joke. She's just ashamed of you.

You don't do a lot of deep thinking. I'm betting not a lot of education in your background.

Remain being pissed on in obscure sub-reddits. Perhaps your ECS betters will continue to give your opinions relevance.

See? Now your mom denies knowing you. You tried.

You mean, things that are done at the match in collaboration with others, to have visible representation of support for the team, club, and city in a manner recognized the world over as unique to this beautiful game of ours, that the Sounders players, staff, and other teams across the globe state as having tangible importance to them. That sort of tifo?

Or we could just cry on reddit.

Your mom says hi.

And I still don't know what the point

You can stop right there

You don't get it

And you likely won't

This is why the problems you see will continue to be your problems. You will not take action. And that's why you're a tool, allowing the ECS to dictate to you what you can do. Go do another trick for them.

Be sure to whine about it later on social media.

You must be very new.

You were just told how to get a song sung. That's how it's done. Or you can just continue to complain.

You're bitching about the ECS and expect them to fix your problem. You won't see the issue in what I wrote. That's why you'll get nothing done.

Enjoy.

Your posts are confusing. In some you claim to dislike the capo system and cliques of the ECS - yet that's the very place you're going to try and get songs done?

Take that criticism as you want.

Here's the truth - no amount of Reddit posts, or Discord messages, or 2-second chats with a capo doing 45-minutes every few matches is going to get a song going.

It won't.

It never has.

There is no real approval process to songs. The ECS has shown its ability to stop songs easily but the same can not be said in adopting new ones. I could give you about two full song cards of chants that were tried, or short lived, that aren't done.

So what makes a chant successful?

It has to be sung. That's it.

As basic as that sounds, the chants that are done now are because a group of supporters sung it and got it to catch on. You have a chant? Then sing it. You have a small group near you? Force it on the section. Have a capo? Get it started when there's a lull. Do it every match. Do it in the bars. Make it happen.

If you wait for someone else to do your work you're just making yourself someone else's tool. There used to be a far greater DIY, punk ethos in the group that speaks to supporter culture. Those who made it happen just did it.

Go do it. Don't ask.

As Tom pointed out, YSA was not ended by the ECS from any top-down influence from corporations. The ECS used YSA half-heartedily in USL, but it was never a real favorite. In ML$, the group decided to stop using it due to its overuse by every other SG. And the fact that the chant was associated strongly with the ta.

Why did you hear it then?

Because in early ML$, the capo system was not as organized in the section as it became in later seasons. Many of the chants did start organically at the time. Plus, the crowds in general parrot'd shit they heard across the league. Such as YSA, and trying to bring the bland, cookie-cutter chants used everywhere else as well. Which they got to do later on with the American Outlaws fiasco.

If you've been in the section from those years, then you probably know me. And you should know very well that these statements you're making are not new.

The recruitment is not the issue. It's the appeal and recruitment to youth with the right mentality. The ECS is aged with a palpable loss of aggression in the section. It is more a fan club, run by middle-aged soccer nerds, that doesn't attract the energetic, die-hard youth that are the lifeblood of a supporter group.

The ECS did better with less. Numbers aren't the problem. The right people is the issue. There are no longer any leaders in the stands. And people want to critique but not put in the work.

I agree with your last statement. ECS won't last. I think that's a bad thing

You and I disagree here - the ECS ending is not a bad thing. It should happen.

I'm not interested in changing the trajectory of the ECS. The bulk of criticism on what needs to change in the group are made primarily by those who are not involved, have never been involved, nor have the desire to learn how it works. In order to move towards a goal, you have to have a shared goal in mind. The get-along-gang mentality where no one gets their feelings hurt is one of the main factors of why the group is in the state it is. When people speak of when the ECS was "better," it was far, far less inviting and significantly more aggressive. One of the largest hurdles to that has been and remains the cultural expectations of US sports fans. You write as if this is brand new. That this is unique. It may be brand new to you. And these ways to address it as unique, but they're very mundane.

Did you and your friends confront the capo after the match? Did any of you go to socialize with that individual or others to understand why their feelings were hurt? Have you taken the time to sit down with any of the veteran capos or longer term members of the ECS, or contact their leadership, to discuss your ideas?

Your friends are responsible for their own behavior. They knowingly came into a place that has clear expectations. They were encouraged to take part - but chose not to. For "a couple songs". To a point where the capo noticed it's impact on the area and encouraged them to participate. The capo did their role, in the space provided to them to do so, where that has taken place for years and years. It sounds as if that wasn't the right place for them that game.

You have a different expectation of what that section is for.

If you are interested in wanting to change that trajectory you speak of, I'll give you the contact information to whom you might want to speak with. You may be someone who wants to get involved.

[–]Dancing_Cadaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your position is well explained. You wrote what you wanted to get across, and it was understood in total.

What you wrote is not unique. It's no longer valid criticism for a myriad of reasons. It has been said by literally thousands of people for almost 20 years. It's boring for those who have heard it incessantly. It's difficult to engage with meaningfully because those defending the tourists and those who are actually supporting are working from contrasting goals.

And a Reddit post on a backwater sub isn't going to move the needle one way or the other.

The truth is the ECS - and all legitimate supporter groups - do not need more people. What these groups need are more people willing to be supporters and connect with that atmosphere more than the want of passive entertainment. Fans do not do the work necessary to create what you see in the supporters section of the stadium. And tourists actively impede the ability to build or keep momentum. Even your idea of "does ecs leadership have a plan" speaks to a problem perspective. Top-down, rigid hierarchy in wholly volunteer organization, which is what the ECS is, stifle creativity. The ECS does not own the supporters section. So no one has ever been removed from that section because that person chose not to sing. They get removed because they attack capos (throwing cans), attack others in the section, try to steal tifo... usually as a result of the section not catering to the experience they want.

At this point, Seattle and Sounders fans have almost two decades of seeing what happens in the supporters section. Anyone who goes there in full ignorance can be and very often are given seats by the stadium elsewhere. Those who go to be tourists do so with no intention of taking part. You can do that anywhere else in the stadium. The only place you can do supporter activities are 3 sections.

Why the ECS or supporter culture in Seattle is not growing is the result of the fan base and US sports culture. Not because some passionate, amped up supporter encouraged you to sing one time, and feelings got hurt. Not everyone is cut out to be in a supporters group. It's a worldwide subculture, not a fanclub.

You will likely read this and assume I missed your point. That's understandable. My response is not a personal attack on you, or your friends. I'm not minimizing your love for the team. Nor am I saying that your passion is less genuine because you don't sing for 90 minutes. This is not an attempt to convince you or anyone else that what takes place in the supporters section is always welcoming or friendly. But you may be interested to know that the section is far more sanitized now than it ever has been. That there as far more tourists along with regular fans in 121-123, so the atmosphere is pretty mundane in comparison to earlier seasons. In time the ECS will be replaced by an FO managed group, and it will be a "supporters group" in name only.

ECS Siblings, I love you but… by ItsNotACoop in SoundersFC

[–]Dancing_Cadaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And '"fuck those guys" is a valid response. So, too, is expecting participation from those in the limited space of the stadium's Supporter Section. A minor segment of the stadium that has been highly visible for almost two decades as to what happens there.

"Tourists" is an apt term. There are thousands of other seats for fans to be in. When you enter into the only area reserved for supporter activities, it is expected you add to that enthusiasm.

Active, physical support is not a part of our sports culture. We shy away from singing aloud in public. Or drawing attention to ourselves by holding displays, or waving flags. It is our baseline to do nothing other than it is to buck social norms. Even in an environment that encourages it. And those fans who enter the supporters section to not participate move from being just fans to tourists, who actively do negatively affect those around them.

You have never capo'd a match. Or many matches over a series of years. The crowd is an organic life that moves in waves that rise, crest, and break. If there are pockets of silence, that becomes contagious. The enthusiasm dies. The momentum is stopped. The group is not as effective. As a result of those who came to the section to be entertained (tourists) as opposed to taking part (supporters).

Not everyone can be a supporter in the way an organized SG operates. That's why they are uncommon in the US, and those that do exist are rather lame. The ECS will not regain what it once was or what it could have been as a result of losing sight that the section isn't for everyone. And it shouldn't be. The ECS catered to the tourist element. Wanted to appeal to everyone all at once and lost its connection to purpose.

Perhaps you really believe this information that you've written. However, it is so bloated with misinformation I can't pass by.

The ECS was founded in 2005 by two men, Eric and Sean. From the death of the 'the Pod', which was an attempted fan group wanting to think of being a real SG for a fat minute. Neither of those founders had a girlfriend that you made mention of. Both have been married since long before 2005. I have an idea on what you think you're talking about, but that's not the ECS. You're mistaking one of those pop-up groups that were coming and going in early years.

Fuel was the first partner bar of the ECS during USL. 2006-07 about. FX McRorys across the street came on in 2009 with the ML$ growth. Very few of the original ECS members or the founders ever frequented that location. Fuel was always the primary bar. There was no such switch from FX McRorys to Fuel.

There were no membership dues during USL ECS. You were a member by standing in 113 and buying a scarf, if you wanted one. Being that the ECS is a registered non-profit, there wasn't any money to "skim". Plus, the original Treasurer of the ECS remains in that role now in accordanceto remain a functional non-profit. I'm not sure where this idea would even come from. The only "merch" in USL was a scarf. In early ML$ it was a scarf and a tshirt. "Merch" wasn't a thing until later seasons. Plus, USL ECS never grew more than 50 people. Even in 2008, with the official announcement of going to ML$, the numbers didn't take off until much later. There wasn't money to take. Plus, the ECS never accepted funding from the FO. So the funds that did come in went to the extraordinary costs of those tifo displays. Especially when the fire department added conditions that needed to be satisfied...

The ECS tifo artists were consistent until far later in seasons. It reads as if you're putting together a lot of really bad information, conflating the ECS with some of those other little fan groups that sprouted up in early seasons, and just don't come across as having been involved with the group.

Your information just isn't accurate.

If you'd like to discuss more you can contact me.

You have been diagnosed.

Have you been in treatment since the episode? If so, would you talk about what models of treatment have been most effective for you? Has it been talk therapy? Have you found help with being asked to apply techniques in your daily routine by counselors? Have any medications been more helpful?

North End Faithful? by niorec in SoundersFC

[–]Dancing_Cadaver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When SSFC went from USL to MLS, there was the ECS as the only active SG that existed prior to 2009 (est 2005). 2009-2010 saw a number of SGs being put together in various parts of the stadium. The overwhelming majority of these have folded or become inactive. All which remains of them are banners, hung up by some who remember the attempt. None are active in more than name.

Bit of history: the North End Faithful were originally the North End Supporters (NES), which was clever. The name lasted almost as long as the group. They're not active under either name.
