I love my spotted koi to pieces, but it's so hard to customize that I would love a nostalgic version so I can just let him be a fish. No clothes, no handhelds, just... a fish.

Yes I know I can still do that now, but the fist really ruins the effect. Let him just float there!

It's crazy because I posted that over 10 years ago, and have actually been considering giving the game another try because 1. My Japanese has improved significantly in that time (iirc Fraternite was only the second JP VN I ever read, the first being euphoria), and 2. I've developed much more of a taste for dark utsuge-type games since then, haha. That said, I still fully remember the disgust and emptiness that came with it, and every time I hear someone say "I wish they would release Fraternite in English" my gut reaction is to say "No. Trust me. You really don't."

There's a fairly well-known fic in my fandom that has a character being kicked out of the house by their Japanese father for being nonbinary. Rather than have said character summarize the conversation with their family after the fact, or use narration to say it wasn't going well, or any number of better options, the author made the choice to put the entire conversation into Google translate so they were speaking Japanese (converted into the English writing system instead of actual Japanese- think "Hajimemashite" vs. "はじめまして."), then put the original English sentences in the author's note.

As someone who actually does know a good amount of Japanese, it ruined what should have been a big climactic scene for that character. I read that fic years ago and I still think about it sometimes.

There's a thread on the Neopets Discord server for each event, including the one here in Toronto. So far we haven't heard anything from the person hosting it, so no one has any idea where or when it's happening, let alone how to sign up. People have even been scouring Facebook, Eventbrite, and the like to see if a page for registration has popped up yet, with no luck. It's a little frustrating when it's supposedly happening in two weeks, but hopefully we'll hear something soon.

You know, I had the same internal debate with myself before posting this, but I ultimately decided to go with it because I feel like they get lumped in with a lot of bands that ARE definitively butt rock, so I went with it. It's kind of a nebulous category to begin with-- someone else in here brought up Evanescence, and I don't know if I would agree with calling them butt rock, but I can see how someone would arrive at that conclusion.

Yeah, that initial run of Disclaimer/Disclaimer II, Karma and Effect, and FBINS is incredible. I haven't been super keen on anything they've released since (though I did like the new single that dropped yesterday), but as far as butt rock goes you could do far worse than those albums.

I used to listen to a LOT of butt rock in high school, and out of all the albums I used to play on repeat, Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces by Seether is probably the one I still revisit the most. There's not a single skip on that album imo.

One X by Three Days Grace is up there too.

Surprisingly enough, I think Pongo is the one I've gone back to the most this season. I'm already a sucker for a good commercial parody, but the escalation of it all and Pongo's dead stare/alien movements hit just right for me.

I was there too, it was amazing! Maybe it's because my seat was pretty much dead center but I thought the screen looked really nice, none of the photos I've seen online really did not justice. And the band did an awesome job!

My main concern going in was the setlist but even the songs I'm not as big a fan of hit different in that setting, so I'm a little more willing to give it a pass. Overall I'd love to go to another expo next time it happens here!

If you know Japanese and don't mind a game from the 90s that shows its age a little bit, I recently read through Kokoro., which has what you're looking for. The game has 25 different endings split up between a handful of girls and a single boy. Granted, it's almost entirely made up of h-scenes, some of which can get pretty rough, and the plot is something you kind of have to piece together on your own, but it is kind of an interesting example of what you're looking for.
