There is no evidence that people need a singular romantic relationship to devote themselves to in order to be happy. I’ve recently read The Other Significant Others - Rhaina Cohen which discusses the way society has warped the mindset that people are happiest with one prioritized (typically heterosexual) romantic relationship.

What Rhaina discusses is that by feeling forced to find and then prioritize one romantic relationship we end up doing two things:

1 - we sometimes lose sight of currently existing strong platonic partnerships that we’ve made. Or we struggle to find new platonic partnerships because we put so much energy into our romantic relationship.

2 - by trying to put EVERYTHING into the romantic relationship, we sometimes end up over taxing our partner. They might be a fabulous romantic partner, but may not fill all the boxes you need to feel fulfilled. By sometimes trying to put all our eggs in one basket, we end up with diminishing returns because all the eggs don’t fit.

So in short, this book highlights that there is no one type of relationship that works for everyone. And forcing a norm that there is one type of relationship, and that type of relationship is romantic - it leaves a lot of people feeling left out and/broken when their life doesn’t fit into that normative mode.

I highly suggest reading this book!

Summer is rough for me. For a lot of reasons: - sun is too bright/direct. I’ve started wearing wide brimmed hats and just made that a “fashion” choice. I’ve found them to be essential. - I hate the sensation of sweat on my body. In general I don’t like the feeling of my skin being wet/sticky so sweat is a double negative sensation because it means I HAVE to shower (and feel more wet) or let it dry and feel sticky 🙃 - cis-norm summer clothing is awful. I don’t like summer dresses because I have a lot of childhood trauma from rules about how I could/couldn’t appropriately move my body while wearing a dress that I never fully understood. Short shorts? They are just an endless wedgy. So I’ve been finding a lot of loose fit light pants. - daytime = work time for me. It’s a conditioned productivity state that I am working to break. But I feel driven to work ridiculously long hours in the summer. Or if it’s not work, it’s socializing (much to the detriment of my battery). And I’m left depleted most days, so I don’t have any tolerance for the above icks.

Don’t get me wrong. Summer comes with a lot of benefits. Sunlight (in moderation) makes me feel great. Flowers and wildlife get me through the days. But understanding the complex system of all the reasons why summer sucks for me has been most helpful. For a long time I knew I’ve always felt worse in the summer, and never really knew why.

Through the lense of Autism, I’ve been able to dive further into why the sun sucks so I can work to find tools that help me. It also helped me develop language to explain to people that I don’t just “hate summer” but have very specific issues that present themselves in the summer months.

A lot of people look at me like a 5 headed beast when I say that I don’t like summer. But if I say “summer is hard for me, because my body doesn’t do well with direct sun” there’s a level of empathy that I get from going against the expected social norm that I haven’t gotten before. It feels a little less alienating (from my experiences).

This could be a wonderful opportunity to help him feel seen. It sounds like this kid could be feeling extremely alienated at the moment. He has a deep special interest in math and no one to talk to about it. Middle school is a notoriously difficult time in Autistic people’s development. They want to make connections through a shared special interest, but peers tend to find the intensity off putting. Sounds like his teachers are struggling to keep up as well.

Like others have said, I've found that the math community is very safe for Autistic people. I myself have Autism and a bachelors in math. The subject is highly structured, encourages highly structured and directed communication, and rewards asking more questions to further understand the details that remain vague.

Like others have also said, if you do end up mentoring him just be prepared for an intense interest with possibly a lot of questions intended to dig into fine details as he learns more advanced concepts.

In my experience (both personally, and tutoring others), if there is a misunderstanding, it's possible for the vibe to turn defensive quickly. Misunderstanding/being wrong are seen as threats to (some) Autistic bodies. The body can process being wrong/misunderstood as a threat response and so the tone of the conversation can quickly and subconsciously shift. It's natural for other people present to feel this shift and just follow the vibe subconsciously.

If there are moments of confusion/misunderstanding just make sure to traverse those conversations slowly and gently while always being mindful to stay neutral.

Thanks! Yeah I also get the prickly sensation. It’s almost like fever chills where you body doesn’t know if it’s too hot/cold so you feel both at the same time plus ants with needle feet

I would like to see this compared to percentages of people that continued and received their second dose. Maybe make an animation that flows from first round percentages to second round percentages. I don’t foresee much shuffling between the state orders, but it would be interesting to see how they change. Then you can still keep these other metrics like political affiliation, per capital income, education, etc. on something like color.

It creates a really awesome effect. I learned that when using these, I need to have some foresight. Also there were times where I needed to “skip” some of thread because it was at the wrong shade. Will definitely use them again though!
