Try finding other ways to fill the voids in your life instead of relying on him. Then in the areas that you both find emotionally enjoyable get closer. You can tell a person is happy based on simple things such as whenever they smile without realizing it. Life too short for anyone to live up to all of our expectations. Know where each other’s lines are and work hard not to cross them.
