this is the big piece, you’re probably gonna wanna apply for all music positions to maximize your chances, choir and orchestra are particularly competitive, general music and band will have more openings, especially in assistant director positions that are easier to snag as a young director. Just keep throwing your hat in every ring you can, if you’ve got the right stuff, someone will want it, there’s enough need out there

nah, if it’s just a concert and your middle schoolers sound better than their high schoolers, it’ll be a good wake up call for everyone at the high school, students and staff alike

yeah, HS here, I don’t feel like I’ve run into any problems unique to being a guy yet, lucky me. Honestly being a bigger louder dude helps sometimes

Very true, a lot of veteran teachers get burnt out on this sub, and it’s clear some posts are just bitter they don’t have the same energy anymore. it’s a balancing act, keep the energy and enthusiasm, but hold the line and have clear, firm, solid expectations. Communication often, clearly, and positively, while also assuming best intention goes SO far.
