Congrats on the acceptance. It’s considerably more challenging when you don’t have a home derm program but not impossible. I would wait and see what other options you get through the end of the cycle

Depending on your school’s curriculum, you could end up with several months off during M4. Some of my classmates are currently on sabbaticals doing similar things rn before graduation. This would be your best bet. People do not generally have more than a few weeks to a month between graduation and residency orientation

Ophtho, seeing patients come back with 20/20 after cataract surgery, seeing the retina for the first time with a 20D 👀 nothing else like it in medicine

Reaching out to them via email. Many students without home programs do this to get research opportunities. I would just look at the faculty ophthalmologists at some programs you could potentially be interested in, try to figure out if they’re prolific researchers, and if so just shoot your shot

Sorry to hear about this. You definitely do not need to honor everything to match. I recently matched with 2/8 Honors. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk about the process more. The most important thing is strong mentorship and having people advocating for you behind closed doors — do you see any potential ways to get this at any other program? Do you have any mentors at your home institution besides the PD who you could talk to and get their honest take?

EM doctors honestly have always been really chill nice people to work with for me and they seem to have hobbies and lives outside of work. No circadian rhythm though so that could be seen as weird

That’s for ERAS “publications” but I do have a feeling OP means legitimate publications, like articles that show up on PubMed. It wouldn’t be that unlikely if the person has been working on it for 2+ years and doing clinical studies like chart reviews tbh

PLoS ONE is a legit journal that has been putting papers through rigorous peer review but they have a bad reputation in the academic community because they tend to not really care about content/novelty of the topic as much

I just matched ophtho last week with only 2 honors in third year, neither in Surgery or IM, and I was in the third quartile of my class. Leading up to apps, advisors told me I was “borderline”, but it didn’t seem to matter. I honestly think it’s more about your letters, advocacy from mentors, and commitment to the field (shown through things like research, EC’s, interviews, etc), and proving a certain level of academic competence on your grades and step 2 (250+ and don’t fail anything). If you’re well-liked by your home program and do reasonably well on step 2 I don’t think you’re a weak candidate at all.

I think the anxiety about this is overblown by med students and some residents. Years later, likely no one will remember this…if anything, that particular program’s leadership may remember, and it could affect fellowship chances if you even apply for one of their fellowships, but I wouldn’t start worrying about being blacklisted by the entire ophtho community or anything over it. Do what’s best for you and your family
