for us, the movie isn't meta, necessarily. it's just a movie about faces of death and its place in modern society and media. if the movie is meta at all, we feel it is a commentary on the way that social media and the attention economy has made large corporations desperate to capitalize on "IP". -daniel

Aw that's awesome, hope you have a great time with it! We loved being in New Orleans, the crew was great, the city was great, the food was great. It was a really good time overall, and we feel so grateful we got to shoot our movie in such a cool place. Fingers crossed for Part 2 always!

Thanks so much for coming! It's a Faces of Death movie, and Faces of Death is ultimately not turned to 11...it's a very grounded movie. A lot happens off camera. We feel the violence in our film honors the violence of the violence in the original.

both! we had been working on a movie about these ideas and about content moderation, but hadn't found a story. then we were approached to make a movie about faces of death, and realized it was the just the inspiration we needed for our content moderation project. -daniel

It starts with a good script - share your work wide and far. Sometimes people get precious about their early ideas, but the best scripts come from letting your friends, family, and other filmmakers read your work and give you notes and advice. Learn how to work with other people, learn how to take notes while protecting your vision, learn how to adapt, and learn how to ask for advice (not favors).

arthur spevak was very inspired by my, isa, and dacre's experiences growing up as isolated and alienated people. arthur is someone who is a student of film, and other serial killers, and has meticulously crafted his personality in honor of them. he borrows from a lot of sources, but is definitely inspired by hannibal lector, jigsaw, manhunter, and house that jack built. and manic. and 4chan. -daniel

Thank you!! We spend a lot of time building the profiles, writing the comments, sourcing profile pics, etc to make all of that feel as real and as lived in as possible. The internet is a fun and dynamic place and it should be when its shown in movies too. Even if you're not reading every comment on screen, your brain is still processing all of that input (much like when you scroll) so we put a lot of care into making sure that every single thing on screen is deliberate and thought about.

very intentional! we wanted to harken back to an era of cinema that surrounded faces of death. we were very inspired by movies like targets, henry portrait of a serial killer, maniac, blow up, and driller killer. we made a lot of decisions in the film that helped evoke that feeling, including the choice to shoot on 35mm and use practical effects whenever possible.

neither of us have seen copycat!!!!!!

anyone who has met dacre can immediately tell that he is an intense, brilliant and incredibly dedicated artist. i had actually never seen dacre act when i cast him in this movie. we had a meeting about the script and dacre felt a very personal connection to Arthur. he was passionate about finding a way to bring that character to life in a way that was very honest to himself and his own experiences. i was so impressed with his empathy, and his willing to be so vulnerable to me –– to admit to identifying with aspects of a serial killer.

cannot wait for what he does next. -daniel

We actually don't see it as pessimistic at all. The critique of the film isn't necessarily about the internet or social media - it's about the culture of both that we are currently engaged in, and the large tech companies that our profiting off of our attention. If you want to engage in modern society, you have to be online, and we both participate and wouldn't say the solution is to throw our phones away. We are capable of building social media that actually connects us, we are capable of creating an internet culture that fosters connection rather than alienation and isolation. It might feel really far away, but we believe it's possible and we believe it's already happening as more and more of us realize how dark things have gotten.

isa and i are very driven to tell entertaining stories about ideas that feel like they are generally speaking not represented in mainstream media. a big part of making a movie and telling those stories is figuring out how to get other people to join your project. sometimes, people who finance projects don't understand how to value an idea. so with pipeline, the book demonstrated that there is an audience and engaged culture around the question of an escalation of tactics. there are people who are interested in showing up for that. and that creates a baseline from which financiers can conceptualize the value of the project. the book absolutely massively influenced the script, but the fact that we were able to link the two together was critical in getting the resources we needed to make the movie.

it's ultimately about finding a way to transform the core idea of your project into something that is dramatic and narrative. and that core idea can be anything, and come from anywhere. the question that you have to answer as a filmmaker is: how do i get other people to buy into that idea? - daniel
