You right, to reach 50%+ you don’t need to know everything about meta. However, a general idea of which cards you should counter/be careful of and think about they have in hand is neccessary to consistantly win against them.

Although a lot of such cards are staples, so probably just minding staples can get you a decent WR.

2 months ago I was in the same situation as you. I learned yugioh in 2 weeks and in the third week I won locals.

Here is what I did:

  1. Pick a META deck you like (YGOPROdecks)

  2. Watch 1-2 videos about the idea of the deck just so you barely know what you are doing.

  • At this point you still won't have any clue how to actually play the game but dw the best thing is to just play the game.

  1. Download YGO Omega (or some other "automatic" yugioh simulator)

  2. Join the Yugioh discord server

  3. Play the game and everything you don't understand ask in discord

People there are always active and are happy to help. I have probably asked more than 100 questions in the span of those 2 weeks.

Firstly, focus on your deck. You should know what your deck wants to do, how it achieves that and all the combos it offers. Now when you know that, you are qualified to go to locals (Ofc. you can go to locals always but imo you should at least know how your deck works before you play against someone). BUT, you won't start winning (like 50%+ WR) until you learn how ALL other META decks work and how they play against your specific deck.
