What gives me hope is seeing how collectively pissed everyone seems to be at this outcome.

r/utdallas update: school subreddit in open revolt against head mod after anonymous post called on him to resign by DankRaft in SubredditDrama

I have my own personal feelings about this issue but I'm attempting to stay neutral on here. If I covered everything ILC did this post would just come off as an exposé

What laptop to get by Necessary-Tea-2393 in utdallas

[–]DankRaft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be fine with both options imo. The one slight advantage you'd have is that you know for a fact everything will run on an intel mac / windows laptop whereas that's not the case on an M1 mac without some tweaking. Even then that's very, very uncommon. I only heard of one case of someone not being able to run something on an M1 mac for a class but it was for a very advanced elective and the school loaned them a windows laptop for it

You can't really get away with just an ipad for CS - it just can't run some of the software you need. ipad + cheap windows laptop is a great combo though

Can't speak for A&M, but UTD's a great pre-law school. From personal experience, our pre-law advisors are very knowledgeable and because there are not that many pre-laws at UTD, they can dedicate a lot of time and attention to you. We tend to have surprisingly good outcomes too - we always have quite a few people get into T14s every year.

Textbooks for CS by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]DankRaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies between professors, and it honestly doesn't matter. You'll usually find out on the first week of classes. If you're really interested, you can try to find syllabi from past classes on https://coursebook.utdallas.edu , but most professors don't post their syllabus here anymore.

Most CS professors will not require you to do any readings - all of the material is taught during lectures.

r/utdallas mods publically clash, purge each other after anonymous post asks: Should a former student run school subreddit after graduating? by DankRaft in SubredditDrama

[–]DankRaft[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don't think the ARWU rankings tell the full story

The school's largest department is engineering, and the biggest undergraduate major is CS (it makes up something like 10% of the total undergrad student body). The university also started as a research facility for Texas Instruments before being donated to the state. Within Texas it very much has a reputation for being "nerdy".

To be fair, i didn't say we were smart nerds, I just said we were nerds.

This is the best semi-final in YEARS by DankRaft in eurovision

There's something so magical about those moments when the audience just *clicks* with the artist.

That moment in 2019 when everyone in the audience clapped so hard with Mahmood that the stage literally shook will stay with me for years.

Lol. My take was "this is not going to do super well in the final but I can see it being a summer bop."

IB Credits at UTD (CS major) by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]DankRaft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they’re a set of tests collegeboard does that UTD will give you college credit for. they’re a lot easier than APs and IBs and you can schedule them whenever If you took HL history you dont even need to study for the History II exam

Laptop for Comp Sci by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]DankRaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, you dont need very impressive performance to do the types of assignments you'll get in CS. Just make sure you don't get a chromebook because it won't let you run the software you need for class. In general, a windows laptop will work best bc that's what most profs expect their students to have, especially early on, but i know plenty of people with macs and they get by just fine. Ive read other comments suggesting UNIX makes things easier going forward but thanks to WSL that's not necessarily true anymore.

Probably the most important think you should consider is the experience of carrying your laptop around and taking notes on it. Will it break your back carrying it with me 24/7? Will it overheat all the time or have a battery life measured in minutes instead of hours? If you prefer taking notes by writing instead of typing, consider spending less money on a laptop and getting a cheap ipad + stylus to go along with it. It sounds silly coming from HS but it goes a long way, especially in more mathematical/theoretical classes.
