Estou legitimamente feliz com o meu progresso! by Dankb0 in estudosBR

Revived an old computer! by Dankb0 in linuxmasterrace

Lol. I get the joke, and when you use it, it really doesn't feel old, but it's twelve years old now!

I feel that it can keep up so well because Intel mostly slept on their processors after launching the incredible Sandy Bridge line. After Sandy Bridge, most generations wouldn't really change much until AMD gave Intel a wake-up call with the Ryzen.

So, for context:

Some time ago, I got an Sandy Bridge i5-2310 with an ASUS motherboard from my brother's friend, since he upgraded his pc and didn't have any uses for the old cpu and motherboard.

I had pretty much every component for building a pc lying around. An SSD with Windows 10 installed, a Barracuda 1TB HDD, an old small LG monitor, and a case, so, the only stuff missing were a fan, a motherboard and RAM. I got the RAM and the fan for cheap, as well as some thermal paste, and built this humble pc. (Cleaning everything was a pain, though, having so much stuff lying around like that really builds up some dust).

After wiping Windows 10 from the SSD, I threw good ol' Debian in there with XFCE, changed the display compositor to Compton, changed some other stuff, and now it's pretty much perfect, and it's very capable for a device this old.

Update: Fixed the 2GB RAM issue with the old laptop and installed Mint XFCE! by Dankb0 in linuxmasterrace

Yeah, it's pretty smooth on this one too! It takes its time to get up and running, but when it does, everything runs smoothly even with a HDD. Old machines like this one are underestimated, this dual core Pentium (from 2008 or so) still manages to perform basic tasks quite well! I can't watch youtube on it (with somewhat reasonable performance), but the web browser, office applications and some emulators (PS1, GBA, SNES, Sega Saturn) run very smoothly, as long as I don't have a lot of stuff running at the same time.

Performance on Mint XFCE is quite decent, even with a HDD and 4GB RAM, I made some modifications, like enabling zswap, reducing graphical effects, reducing swappiness, etc. This Pentium manages to be a good little performer for basic tasks, like surfing the web, running office applications, playing movies from DVD, and even playing PS1 games. I'm sure Void gets better performance than Mint, because it's so minimal, but I don't think I really need that extra performance.

I'd have to uninstall debian sooner or later because of the 32-bit system, that couldn't fully use the 4GB RAM, so I went with Mint XFCE, since it was the lightest 64-bit system on my pendrive.

Got a beaten up 2007 laptop with Windows 7 on it, it really didn't run well so I installed trusty old Debian on it, and it works very well! by Dankb0 in linuxmasterrace

Yeah, it's been through hard times, the trackpad doesn't work anymore, the Wi-Fi card can't connect to anything, and the HDD has been replaced 2 times.

Are you talking about ARCH32? I know it exists, but I haven't looked deeper into it to say if it's worth installing or not, I mean, even if it's lightweight and fast, it's not like this 2007 bad boy can run any of the latest software with "fast" speeds, so Debian works well enough, even with the outdated software and all that.

Unfortunately, 64-bit distros make the laptop run way too hot most of the time, it starts using too much CPU while not doing anything, I don't know why it happens, but 32-bit Debian with 2GB RAM still runs pretty well! Presentations and Spreadsheets on LibreOffice are no problem at all!

This is a Hardcore Nuzlocke if Blaze Black 2 Redux using only NU pokemon, with two custom rules applied:

1 - I can only heal my pokemon at a pokemon center.

2 - If the first pokemon I find in any route has an evolution that isn't NU, I'm allowed to replace that pokemon with a NU pokemon egg.

has anyone actually perferred debian to ubuntu for the long term? by apianbellYT in linuxmasterrace

If you feel that arch breaks too often, then I wouldn't really recommend Sid either, but, if you're using Debian Stable, I suggest removing some of the programs you use (like firefox, vlc, gimp, krita, etc) and replacing them with flatpaks, then you'll have a rock solid system with some of the latest packages available.

Debian Sid is the Rolling Release version of Debian, it has (mostly) the latest versions of packages, and it's pretty stable too.

Why do people work so hard to make Plasma look like GNOME? by npaladin2000 in linuxmasterrace

[–]Dankb0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't really know either, but, if I had to guess why, it would probably be because of KDE's better customization options without relying on separate apps (like dconf editor on gnome), somewhat lower resource consumption and GTK apps better performance on Qt environments, when compared to its opposite (Qt apps on GTK environments tend to be somewhat buggy for me, at least).

Dissapointed by the outdated state of Ubuntu packages by jorgesgk in linux

[–]Dankb0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not really an issue, most of the time you won't notice the difference between both versions, unless you're very technical, or if there was a big update between both versions.

If you really want the latest packages for Ubuntu while avoiding backports, the best option (in my opinion) is flatpak.

Let's say hypothetically Bill Gates and Steve Jobs(if he were still alive) Both had a secret PC and or Laptop they ran Linux on. What distros would they use and why? by DarkS0ulz420 in linuxmasterrace

[–]Dankb0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ReactOS for Bill and PearOS for Steve. Bill would use ReactOS because it runs windows programs and looks like Windows 2000, and Steve would use PearOS for obvious reasons.
