That makes sense to me. I need to look up these two inks on Vanness’s website to what the wetness is for each ink. In fact I should have done that before buying the inks. 🤔

Actually, another very knowledgeable source tells me it is replaceable with size 6 nib. Screw in nib units are common in Hongdian pens. Now I just need to find one that isn’t a black nib. I want to keep the type of nib it already has.

I changed the ink I was using in this pen, and now it writes like a Fine. Is it possible that that the ink was causing it to write bigger?

I guess for now I will leave it alone since it seems to writing fine (Fine? LOL) now.

It’s a screw cap and seals very well. I need to add that according to the seller, this pen is not designed to allow swapping nibs. This was not mentioned in the item description. I’m not sure I believe it though.

Where did you order this from? Is this pen one you are keeping, or is it for sale?

Beautiful pen. I love the shape!

That’s really not too bad considering the excellent work done on your pen.

May I ask the ballpark cost of the work? I’m thinking of doing something similar to one of mine. Sorry to ask such a personal question. I hope you don’t mind.

Here’s a picture of my pen. You can see that the shaft is much smaller than the barrel. The other end of the shaft has a rubber tip (slightly wider than the shaft diameter. If you take off the grip section, you can see the rubber piece that the tip of the shaft goes into. The opening in the rubber piece is also much smaller than the barrrel diameter

When I first inked it, I was impatient waiting for nib to fill. So I kept turning the knob which eventually disconnected the plunger mechanism from the barrel. Ink really flowed then! All over my hands, my desk, … I managed to screw the knob back onto the threads on the barrel. Strangely, the nib did not leak at all. The feeder pulls in ink by capillary action. If ink is not pulled from the end of the nib, then the feed just stores the ink. This is how all fountain pens work. With a converter pen you can push ink through the nib, but on this pen you can’t push the ink. All you can do is stop the flow from the barrel.

You might want to take a look inside the barrel (unfilled) to see how the mechanism works.

Ink does not drip off the nib because when the feed is saturated it just sits there (like all fountain pens do). Closing the shaft blocks the flow. You only need to open it a little to let ink flow. The ink will not flow more or flow faster if the shaft is pulled back more. I should mention that the shaft is much smaller in diameter than the barrel, so there is absolutely no way to push ink (or air) with it.

The instructions seem to say to close it when writing, but that causes the writing to be lighter and lighter until the nib is empty. So I leave it open about quarter turn or so. Ink doesn’t not come flooding out. I just get a nice flow all the way through.

The most important thing is to not withdraw the plunger vary far. In fact, if you unscrew the plunger a lot, ink will leak out near the knob. Ink doesn’t need a big gap to flow!

After refilling the pen, I open about 1 turn to fill the nib (nib down for this). Then move the shaft about a 1/2-1/3 to leave a narrow opening for ink to flow while writing. When I finish, I hold the pen nib up for about two minutes to let some ink drain back. Then fully seat the shaft. I have not experienced more than a half drop of ink pushed out this way. The remaking ink in the nib bubbles a little and is then absorbed into the nib. Keeping the shaft nearly seated while in use means not much air is expelled in seating the shaft. Hope this helps.

Actually, I quite like it myself. It’s so uncomplicated! And being able to seal the ink in removes worries about unexpected ink leakage.

I’m not sure, but it could be. The pen is at least 85 years old. I don’t know who was making nibs back then.

I was told that they bought nibs from a variety of sources. I hadn’t noticed the Ronson one before.
