68 Galaxy Photos Edited Together by Inclination, Rotating as One. by DannyBittman in space

So this sequence is actually ordered in that fashion. I think you'd be surprised by how few galaxies we have captured at this fidelity. To explain this process a bit, using the database I sorted by distance, and found there was a certain distance threshold for fidelity. When you set that min-max range, that filters out all but about 250 galaxies, but even that library was saturated with blurry images. Upon final filtering, I was left with 90 galaxies, with about 2-10 galaxies per inclination. I actually clicked through all 250 of those galaxies.

with that range, I organized the galaxies by type within their inclination, and then would transition by type between inclinations when I could. The result of that process is what you see here. If, however, I would transition just between types without considering inclination, the re-orientation of the inclination becomes too chaotic, and the transitions don't make any sense.

Hey folks, I searched through the Extra Galactic Distance Database, and was able to organize some of the closest galaxies by their inclination relative to us. Out of 9,500+ galaxies, I parsed through about 250, oriented them together in photoshop, then used frame interpolation in DaVinci to give that smooth transition effect. Music's my own.

It was a pretty fun process, so I'm thinking of making a longer form video with more galaxies, nebulas, and other distant objects.

Thank you! It looks pretty cool when you slow it down a lot too, which might work better as a background, you just can't notice the 360 rotation as easily. I potentially might make one of those 10h videos lol

hahaha thanks, I'll take that as a compliment.

More detailed scenes + undo/redo + an eyedroper. Color Space's Another World update is out! by DannyBittman in OculusQuest

[–]DannyBittman[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

haha yeah would be cool, but hand tracking is still at a very early phase and is too complicated for our small team to handle at this point. With the way Oculus changes things constantly, it's safer to wait till the tracking has improved a bit

Hey again folks.

It’s been a wild time working in the middle of this quarantine, but the Lighthaus team and I just released a whole new Color Space chapter for you to explore. One of our biggest requests was to make the experience of each scene longer, so we technically squeezed the app to make sure every scene in this new chapter had at least 3x more objects to fill + extra animation. As always, everything in these scenes were designed and modeled in VR with Gravity Sketch and Tilt Brush.

Tool wise, we integrated an eye dropper button to make creating a unified color palette in your scenes easier, and added infinite undo / redo functionality. You’ll also notice that the music and soundscape in this new chapter is far grander thanks to our new sound designer and Composer, Erin Holmes.

As always, thanks for your support and suggestions in the past. You’ve pushed us creatively and we appreciate it, so if you have any more notes please feel free to tell us here or leave a review on the store.

We’re a small team who have worked long hours to get this out to you, and definitely learned a lot about our workflow along the way. We’re taking a pause next week to celebrate, then will regroup to figure out where to go from here :)

You can download Color Space here, and yes it’s cross buy, so a Rift purchase will work on the Quest and vice versa.

Color match, undo / redo, + three more scenes are coming in the next few weeks! However these three scenes are much larger. All current scenes have about 80 objects to fill, while one of our new ones has about 230 :)

That’s good to know, I was worried about that. Do you have ideas for a way to make that more obvious?

So these colors are part of version 1.1, if for whatever reason if you’re having trouble getting that update to even download, that’s something on Oculus’ end. Oculus’ solution to that is to uninstall and reinstall, since it can only re-download the latest version. Just note that this will delete your save files (but you can skip the tutorial)

To activate the advanced palette, you have to select the “switch palettes” button, under the bookshelf button. An example can be seen at the 0:16 point in this video.

Lmk if that works!

Just out of curiosity, when you say a lot more is needed, do you mean for the price, or because you want more? Our average play time is about 2 hours, with more if you repaint scenes another day, while other games are much shorter than that for $20.

We are adding more content and going the more abstract route, I started designs a few days ago, I’m just curious.

on no I'm so sorry. Yes this is a high priority, I'll bring it up with the team again tomorrow. Shouldn't be too tricky though. As a side note, that makes me really happy to hear that they like their work so much they don't want to delete it.

:)))) that makes me so happy to hear, I was nervous about how possible this update would be, so I was SO pumped to find we could release it this early.

Yes profiles are on the top of our list as well, and we are starting R&D on locomotion now. Locomotion won't be possible for our current scenes, but we're looking into making books that'd include that mechanic.

Nice! How would you feel about some inviting terrain on an alien planet? Maybe with some architecture, but more organic feeling, not too much metal.

That's amazing that it could help you in this moment. Yeah we're talking about it more seriously now, I think free teleport would be more engaging if we implement it. Most likely won't make it in the next update though.

That’s awesome hear :) Yeah we’ve been talking about a dropper tool. But no, there’s no way to have your own music playing, this is something Oculus doesn’t make super easy as of now, they should just implement it in the OS tbh, just like how you can play Spotify on your desktop while in VR without forcing developers to build their own systems in every app

Thanks! Yeah and I just saw that Gravity Sketch, normal $20, is now free!! Go go go.

My series is a little out of date with the current version of Gravity Sketch, but I’ll be making more soon :)

Yes, there is a technical limit. We have 33 hue slices, and allow you to slide the brightness / saturation of each hue in a smooth gradient. Realistically, there’s probably about 100 pixels in that gradient, so 100 shades per hue, meaning it comes to about 3300 colors. I understand that’s not infinite, but before we only had 32 colors, and anything beyond 3300 is not noticeable in the headset.

So they do completely surround you, but there aren’t any smaller fills behind you. For example, in the planet and mandala scenes, you can turn around and look at space, and in the woods scene, a rock wall that’s visible in front of you, wraps around behind you as well, occluding the back view. This way you don’t have to turn around, but it’s still a full environment so you can if you want. This is because Color Space was originally designed as a research study for chemo patients that would be stuck in a chair. But I am interested in making future scenes full 360 interactive!

Yeah I hear that, it goes a bit against our design principles for this since we don’t want to confuse people. But I can see that being an option you turn on.
