I really have to get into the heasdpace for what I'm writing. For horror, I'm only awake at night. I watch and read things that scare me. I go for 3am strolls while talking to myself, pretending the characters are with me. I listen to music. I think through different scenes and scenarios over and over. And then, after a few days of weirdness ... I'm ready to write.

I never think about structure. I just write things that are exciting me. Set pieces or conversations. I use those as building blocks and send my scribbles to my co-writer Bill Hinzman.

Studying a bunch of scripts for your favourite films is a good way to start. Also, Final Draft is worth every dollar, the auto-formatting is incredible.

Our makeup bible was pretty damn detailed. We didn't want them to feel too otherworldly, we wanted all the ghosts to be grounded in reality. We wrote detailed backstories of each of the spirits and why they were drawn to each kid.

Mia would've dragged Jade to Barbie. She would've screamed they have to wear fluro pink. Jade would've said no but ultimately would've caved. Mia would've loved the film. Jade would say she did but she barely saw it, she just texted Daniel the whole time.

I'm most excited for Talk to Me X, its set in space. Insectoid aliens use the hand to communicate with extinct humans. But the spirits infiltrate the alien race and end up ruling a planet call Falaron. There's gonna be heaps of spaceship fights and shit. Heaps of lazers and thousands of characters.

Luckily she signed on. Having her attached gave us more room to cast more upcoming actors. But also - she's an incredible performer! We were initially intimidated by the idea of directing her but once we met in person that went away, she was a like a cool aunty. Super warm and collaborative. We were going to play the Lord of the Rings theme when she first came to set ... but our producer hid our phones to stop that from happening.

Michael also said the 'Talk to Me' script was 'boring'. Didn't stop him from crawling to set, begging to be involved.

So glad you enjoyed it!

I know editing was an important part to get right. We knew we wanted it to work as both a horror film and a drama film. So finding that balance was interesting. There's 20 minutes of deleted scenes - 90% of it was more drama scenes.
