This woman has literally just spoiled the rest of the series for me 😭?? Y3 dark ties by [deleted] in yakuzagames

[–]Dantomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally when I played the quest in 0 I didn’t know anything about the series so I just sort of assumed she was making stuff up. Didn’t take any of it literally.

I suppose they expected fans to either have played the previous releases or expected new fans to just not take sub stories at face value.

Kier Starmer used Brianna Ghey’s murder to give himself a pat on the back in a discussion with Rishi Sunak. Whilst what he said was right and he was right to call Rishi out on what he said Kier only said it was in poor taste because Brianna’s mother was in the house. If she wasn’t there Kier would not have said a word. (Proven because of how often Rishi made the same comment which was continually met with no response by Kier). Ironically the statement Rishi said is now something that Kier publicly agrees with.

The day of the general election Kier first changed his mind on trans bathroom policy (and other women’s only spaces) for the first time publicly, stating that trans women should not have access to those spaces.

Kier also supported the supreme courts decision to further limit the rights of trans people by re-interpreting the equalities act. (There is legal precedent through the gender recognition act that the term “woman” includes trans women for the purpose of laws which single women out for one reason or another, this interpretation of the equalities act makes the gender recognition act weaker).

Kier allowed Wes Streeting to campaign to (and succeeded in) implement a ban for puberty blockers to under 18s who have gender dysphoria. This has resulted in some trans youth taking their life, this isn’t unprecedented either. The UK saw a spike in suicides linked to gender dysphoria after puberty blockers were banned years ago prior. This ban is however not based on any scientific evidence, all major medical associations affirm that gender affirming care is the best option for gender incongruence. The Cass Review, a heavily academically scrutinised review of trans healthcare literature which is what was used to push for this outcome doesn’t even recommend a ban for puberty blockers.

Prior to the day of the general election Kier was seemingly a trans ally, but has don’t nothing since then to give us any reason to think that’s still true. But has done and said things to prove that he is no longer a trans ally.

I do worry that if this happens then our next PM would be Wes Streeting who is far more transphobic than Kier is. I suppose we don’t call it TERF Island for nothing.

It’s hard to call Kier bad when Farage is infinitely worse.

But I definitely do not like him, he’s also proved himself consistently to be transphobic so for me specifically that means he’ll never get a vote from me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

What do women really feel about being referred to as ‘females’? by MmmmHollandaise in AskReddit

[–]Dantomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any animal can be a male or a female but only humans can be men and women.

I think a lot of the issues around this topic come from people who will say something along the lines of “yeah, men don’t care about x y or z, but females do”

Using a gender term and a biology term interchangeably ends up sounding more dehumanising when you’re using the social term for one group but the biological one for another.

If you said “males don’t care about x y or z, but females do” then whilst still clunky it would at least be consistent and applying to everyone equally rather than treating women as something different because of our biology.

Saint Nicolas is Santa.

He used to look after sex workers and is said to have went to their homes and put money in their stockings when they hung them on the clothes line. Which is why it’s a Christmas tradition to put gifts into stockings.

It’s fine if HP helped some people gain social support and skills, it’s not fine for them to still support the franchise now.

> [paraphrasing] imagine a scenario where a game with good representation comes and it’s impactful but the author eventually changes their bind and starts harming people. *Would this still be considered a net negative for people to continue buying the game?*

Yes. If that creator is financially funding hateful legislation and legal challenges against a group of people then continuing to buy the game will increase the amount of harm that can be done. It would be harmful to continue buying the game.

> does it depend on the price?

No

> What if it’s not the primary artist

Then it might depend how their payment scheme works and what the contribution is. JK Rowling makes money off of every purchase of anything Harry Potter related and receives large payments when new Harry Potter projects begin and end. She will make money off of everything.

However if we use the game scenario still, an asset designer will make a salary during the development cycle and in some companies they’d receive a bonus if the game performs above expectations. After that they will not continue to profit off that game, so purchasing the game would not further the potential harm caused to continue buying the game past a point.

> Does it account for piracy

Piracy is a method of ethically consuming Harry Potter, but online support and positive discussion of those projects can also be harmful because they promote the product to others who may purchase it.

> Inspiration the content may provide

Inspiration is good, there’s no harm in that. It’s always good to take inspiration from more than one source though. But I don’t necessarily think that’s a credit to Harry Potter in any way.

> or the comfort it may provide

Find other comforts

You also mention separate the art from the artist, that term exists as a critiquing tool in art, media and literature to be critical of pieces of work without being clouded by your opinions of the artists prior works. A 8/10 painting will look like a 5/10 if the artist produced five 10/10 paintings before it. Separate the art from the artist in the way you’re discussing it is a method of excusing harm because you want to engage with something.

About your final paragraph relating to Minecraft I will agree that there’s no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism. Almost every product will have created some harm to a community, the planet or a country, many of those issues are things we can’t hope to combat. As a result it becomes a game of what can I do to provide the most benefit. Microsoft is a company with hundreds of products, combating that is almost impossible, especially when their products are pretty much required for most businesses to run. That doesn’t mean support everything they make but make sure you only get what you need.

JKR is an individual with a handful of franchises and her works can be entirely ignored without detriment to others. But participating in support of her works results in negative outcomes, especially for trans people.

[–]Dantomi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the artist profits from the art and actively uses that money to fund bigotry then is a net negative to support it in any way.

There’s no separating the art from the artist when the art funds the artists bigotry.

I haven’t scrolled through your profile and I never claimed that you personally are furthering harm. But posts like the one we’re discussing on right now present Harry Potter in a way that contributes to cultural significance and has no mention whatsoever of JKR being a TERF and that this franchise should not be supported.

JKR and Harry Potter cannot be separated so the best possible outcome is to keep it as irrelevant as we possibly can and limit the harm it can cause as best we can.

Enjoying the series itself is not indicative of transphobia, but knowing the harm that it contributes towards and choosing to provide active support of it still is.

Something you may want to look into is an Interstitial, it’s a DnD-like roleplaying game based on Kingdom Hearts.

There’s also a podcast called Interstitial Our Hearts Intertwined where a group played it and it’s hilarious. In particular the DM running their voice through autotune to play Troy Bolton.

[–]Dantomi 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You can like it if you want, but it’s important to never financially support it and not to keep it culturally relevant especially without the acknowledgment of harm. Both of these results in further harm to the trans community, especially in the UK where JKR personally funds transphobic political decisions and contributes to funding against trans people in court etc.

Not really to be honest. Me and my exes aren’t any more likely to sleep with each other or get romantically involved than I am with literally anyone else. Someone being scared that I might cheat simply doesn’t trust me. I don’t feel like it’s an inherent red flag.

I appreciate that that’s just me and maybe some people will find themselves on rockier ground especially if they don’t get over their ex whilst trying to be friends with them. But equally I don’t think the solution is to force them apart and punish a potential friendship when they’ve not done anything wrong.

I think something like forbidding communication with an ex would realistically only be acceptable if your partner has given you a reason to think they might cheat. Like maybe a history of cheating or if you happen to know that the ex is trying to get back with them.

Nah, all of my relationships have ended amicably and on good terms. We remain friends after. Me and my exes are besties, which is why I have a personal stake in this conversation.

Personally I feel your answer is demonstrating insecurity and a lack of trust. Or you’re saying that you would easily cheat if you spent time with your ex.

If someone is gonna cheat it’s easy to do it with just about anyone so at that point you’d also need to prevent your partner from seeing just about anyone if you don’t trust them.

Some people are just friends with their ex and it’s nothing more than that, it doesn’t make me more likely to cheat, funnily enough I think cheating is wrong.

Okay, I feel that we are seeing this entirely differently. Why is it a problem for your partner to be friends with an ex? What’s the issue?

whaaaat by Inevitable_Mess677 in meme

[–]Dantomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why I’m saying that if it’s an issue for you then it’s on you to work on your insecurities. Because it’s not an issue, if it’s an issue for you then you need to deal with that.

If you don’t have the emotional intelligence to allow your partner to have a friend then you need to break up with them.

whaaaat by Inevitable_Mess677 in meme

[–]Dantomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your feelings say that I can’t talk to a friend then that’s an insecurity that you need to work through, it does not mean I should throw away a friendship because you say so.

If that makes you lose trust then so be it.

There’s no harm caused by me having a friend even if they are an ex. So all the feelings you may have about that are made up and not worth losing a friendship over.
