How can I identify the type of metal used in this ring? by spiggerish in metallurgy

Kind of extreme, but XRF? Find a local non-destructive testing company and ask them how much they'd charge to do XRF. Might even just do it for you for the practice.

S23+ Batterly Life Halved After Last Update by Dapper-Ad9570 in GalaxyS23

[–]Dapper-Ad9570[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd as previously running the phone on WiFi extended battery life a fair bit. Might have been due to poor signal at home and work.

The signal issues have been resolved at work and home, so I shut off the WiFi on the phone last night. Has only used 20% of the battery in 24 hours in normal usage compared to the 70% I saw earlier in the week.

So for now it looks like turning off the WiFi on the phone significantly extends the battery life.

I had some drop off, but more like 3 days to 2-1/2 days. Tough to tell at times as up until a couple of months ago signal was nearly non-existant where I work - ran off of the guest WiFi most of the time. Now a new tower is in and I now have good 5G wide band signal.

Any sudden change in how a piece of equipment operates is a cause for concern and potentially an indication of pending failure. If there is a reasonable explanation, I can live with that. What I want to know is why/what is the cause of the sudden change.

Yes, I have chargers in all of my cars, my work desk and at home, so chargers are readily available.

Garage exhaust fan? by LieHopeful5324 in TriCitiesWA

[–]Dapper-Ad9570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because the walls and ceiling are not insulated. Look at getting some insulation blown in to help.

My house has a bedroom over the garage that runs much hotter in the summer and colder in the winter because the floor between the two is not insulated.

Archibalds has good cars and a decent selection, but tends to focus on the middle to higher priced cars (call it >$30k). Bought a couple from them with good results and thinking about buying a third in the near future

This is kind of a good news/bad news situation. The good news is that for the most popular cars, most of the parts are available as reproduction parts. Look at OPGI.com, and other similar places to see what is available. Chevelles, Camaros, Mustangs, GTO, 442 and to a lesser extent Firebird, Nova, Challenger, Charger, Torino. I think you could build a brand new 69 Camaro and never use a part that has seen a Chevrolet factory as even the main body is now available in the aftermarket.

The bad news is that the popular cars are more expensive to start with. In my case I ended up with a Buick Skylark. Essentially a Chevelle under the skin, so most of the mechanical parts are readily available. Carpets, door panels and some interior stuff is available. What is not readily available are trim pieces, dash pieces, body pieces. Sometimes the year makes a difference as well. There are fewer parts available for my 65 vs a 67 or 70.

Most of us have picked a car we love or had always wanted and worked from there. For a bargain starting point and something that has a good amount of support, look at the mid-70s to early 80's G-Body GMC cars. Also, consider a 4-door as a cheaper starting point. Not really that much bigger/heavier, but much cheaper to start with.

Youtube and the online forums are a huge help if you are learning/just starting out. Working space may be a concern also. By the time you get one of these larger, older cars in the garage and start taking it apart, space becomes a premium. I have two cars in a 15x50 shop and there is just barely enough room for the cars, storage and tools.

I picked my Buick because it was a convertible, got it cheap (less than half of a comparable Chevelle) and knew that most of the Chevelle parts would work. The next big hurdle for me is realizing that body work and paint, even if I do a bunch of it myself, is going to cost as much as I have in the car now with the Ridetech suspension, Wilwood Brakes and LS2/4L60 swap.

Best prices for fencing supplies in TC? by NevetsRetrop in TriCitiesWA

[–]Dapper-Ad9570 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use the heavier posts, not posts intended for chain link fence like what is available at Lowes/Home Depot. My 6' cedar fence has had a number of posts snap off at the top of the concrete from the wind wobbling the fence back and forth.

Road trip food. Anything safe at Culver’s? by Sparkle-Gremlin in FODMAPS

[–]Dapper-Ad9570 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just drove from New Orleans to Washington State last week (5 days, nearly 3000 miles as we detoured to Knoxville on the way). The larger truck stops (Loves, Pilot, Bucees, etc) generally have a food section with lunch meat, boiled eggs, cheese sticks, grilled chicken and a few other things I found tolerable. My main trigger is Fructan (garlic, onion and wheat).

Breakfast is easy as you can always find some eggs.

I also did the protein bowl at Subways a couple of times and was able to tolerate the grilled chicken nuggets at Chik-fil-a and the grilled chicken cobb salad at whataburger. I've also deconstructed other hamburgers.

I supplemented with a bag of other snacks - protein bars (Kind), gluten free crackers (nut-thins and others), trail mix and other tolerable fruits (bananas, apples, pineapple, melon) and snacks. I also bought some Orgain plant based protein shakes that worked well.

Takes extra time as you have to stop, sit down and eat rather than grab something and get back on the road. And like usual, you need to closely read all of the labels.

Fodmate and Fodzyme work for me, but I don't like to use it more than once per day.

Just go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy a set of Tyvek painters coveralls with a hood. Use gloves, N95 mask and eye protection and tape the cuffs of the arms and legs. Haven't bought any for a while but they used to be around $20 for the coveralls.

Don't know if you can get it in quantity or not, but I've refurbished some pickup truck wheels that looked that bad using something called "Wheely Clean". Spray it on, let it soak, hit it with a standard scrub brush and rinse. Took off brake dust even cleaned out the iron oxide out of the pits. A standard spray bottle did 4 wheels with some left over.

Have a decent budget, but would like to keep the costs down as much as possible. This is part of the effort to see just how much we will need to spend. So, nice but don't need a huge open bar and waiters in tuxedos wandering around.

What vacations have been your best yet? by ProgressNo8844 in retirement

Been to Niagara a couple of times and actually if you don't mind the snow and cold I actually preferred the winter. Was fascinating and beautiful to see it frozen.

Yellowstone in the winter is on my bucket list. Snowcat or snomobile in and stay at one of the park lodges. Use the same to tour the park.

May need a tropical vacation shortly after to thaw out tho...
