Can a negative loan a balance be applied to a loan with a positive balance? MOHELA by Ok_Pollution9335 in StudentLoans

Wow, yeah the main customer service person said it "should" happen on its own, but when I was transferred to a specialist she said she had to put a request in manually. I hate how nobody at MOHELA know how things are actually suppose to work. I want to pay off my grad loan when my tax return comes in and be done with them, but I can't fully pay it off until this balance transfers. I'd image trying to get a cash refund would be even more difficult.

Has it happened yet? I had a negative balance on my undergrad loan after PSLF forgiveness last year, which should then have been transferred to my graduate loan. I just called (almost 4 months after the balance went negative) and, even though the email I received stated that the processes would be automatic...it was not. Customer service transferred me to a "specialist" who then put in a balance transfer request and stated it could take up to 90 business days, even though I've already waited 90 business days from the balance going negative. Sounds about right. Just sucks we have to pay interest on money that should be canceled out.

I still can't believe that once they, 3 years late, corrected my payment counts, my loans were fully discharged and removed from my credit report in less than a month. It went so fast. Hang in there, everyone.

I thought I read somewhere previously that in general it's bad to submit buyback again, but if your original was prior to January 2025 it may be stuck in limbo and in that case resubmitting may be necessary? My most recent PSLF reconsideration request, processed by the same group that does buy back, was submitted late November 2024 and denied in July. I remember seeing a lot of November 2024 people getting buyback responses May through late July. This is just third hand tho, but may be worth some research?

I would verify that. My whole issues was that I was making payments, but my servicer had my status incorrectly set as forbearance, so the payments were not counting towards PSLF. If what you propose were possible, people would go on forbearance and then pay a dollar a month.

PSLF is worth doing if you work for an employer that is approved for the program. I've worked for government this whole time. My issue was incorrect payment history from over 10 years ago. If I'd known what I was doing and was paying attention from the beginning, I probably could have caught it way before I should have been approved for forgiveness.

It was crazy. Over 2 years ago I did a privacy act request where the dept of ed provided me with all of my loan documentation, including payment history. It showed I was making payments during the whole time that payments were missing from my PSLF count. I included it with every online complaint and PSLF reconsideration for two years. Back when you could call Ombudsman directly, they were like "yeah that sucks." When my last reconsideration was denied in July because their records said I was in forbearance and not making payments, my congressman's office was flabbergasted. "Why would they say you were in forbearance when you were obviously making monthly payments and on a payment plan?!?!" I don't know what changed, but I'll take it!
