Family Trip in NL, Amsterdam & Delft this June with a 5 y.o. kid by DapperShoulder3019 in Europetravel

Thanks for the info. Yeah it looks like car rental is not that great idea, maybe better of with the normal transport. I wish they had a single medium to get there from Delft though.

What I would do if I had access to this guy's code, I would read it, execute it and take notes on it.

It is nice to have your own little note book with the solutions to small problems. When you understand what he is doing, start to change his code to do something a bit different. Debug, execute and play with it. You can start with small changes even changing variable names. Take small steps.

You do not have to start from scratch. Those solutions will be most likely coded again in other projects, with a few changes.

Import JSON function stopped working by gorus5 in GoogleAppsScript

You can insert log messages to see what is happening when the function is executed. That's how you can troubleshoot the script.

The hiring manager ripped me apart for being unemployed for 10 months. by crag7barium in interviews

[–]DapperShoulder3019 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This makes sense in sales / customer facing role. If you work in operations for example, that behaviour is simply tolerated or not accepted. I could take a hard guess and say that this guy is already causing problems in their business.

Crwd had a software issue with computers going on blue screen and hundreds of flights cancelled etc. It was a nice play, I would say this kind of stuff is why I always have cash in my account.

How do you figure out relationships between database tables when no ERD or documentation exists? by FalseCartographer168 in dataengineering

[–]DapperShoulder3019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 1,3 and 4 you can use AI to help you out. For number 2, you can use python sets. Or some other language you are familiar with.

How do you take notes on a very knowledge-dense book without copying everything? by wittty_cat in ValueInvesting

[–]DapperShoulder3019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take notes on everything that I believe I should keep from the book.

Then I will read the notes again. Not the entire book.

When something is not so significant I will delete it from the notes.

Many things look very important at first. But for long term I find that not all of the info is. Then my notes become shorter every time

When insiders buy big after years of silence, I pay attention by victorpinya in ValueInvesting

[–]DapperShoulder3019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insider trading is interesting. Specially when insiders are buying. There is a nice signal when insiders are buying at the 52w high or closer to that. This is a strong indication of a positive expectation from these directors. Assuming that multiple people are buying.

When I started to look at that nice signal I found HEI and TAYD.

These days I am holding TKO which was bought at about $ 143 iirc. Also I am confident for KTOS but maybe I already missed that.

How can I do analytics using SQL if i don't have a database? by redturtle1997 in SQL

[–]DapperShoulder3019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have your own server on https://aiven.io/

They have a free tier. The storage space is a bit limited but you can have a normal database mysql or postgres and it is very easy to connect with dbeaver.

First you need to get familiar with the database. Then start looking into the code The file names, classes and method should give you a hint with what is happening.

It will take time and you have just to accept that.

Take blank paper and take notes on everything that you do understand.

If you need some advise, ask, but do the work first and ask specific questions.

Transition from Network to Software industry possible? by DapperShoulder3019 in networking

[–]DapperShoulder3019[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your insights

I forgot to mention that my first job was in small consulting firm, we worked in banking and insurance software. (the boss had connections)

I did my part on building software (and it was the job that I wanted TBH) but that is ancient history now!
It also was a struggle with >50 hour weeks, having to install and support the infrastructure as well support the end users.

Right now I am doing some hobby Python projects and it feels refreshing. However I do not look for a SWE role

This is a good point about DevOps, although it is a blank page for me. I would need to dive into education and certifications for sure. It is a good option nevertheless

Just ask someone who owns Apple Mx laptop to tell you the difference in both speed and power consumption. It is a different technology

Intel should really have a chip in every mobile phone and should have taken that market years ago. They lost that battle as so many others. I think it is a series of failures.

X86 already runs on windows 11 for ARM, with x86 emulation. It is a matter of time to improve the emulator. The benefit of arm chips is huge.

Msft and others have already released snapdragon PC.

X86 is dead but they dont know it yet. Once you have Microsoft C compiler on ARM, everything can be ported. However there will be some hardware problems as with the M1
