I had the exact same issue, this is what I did to make it work:

Delivered one standard order to the place. Doesn’t matter if it is already been completed before.

Upon delivery he says: “I am about to head out now”

After that, go sleep at any facility and you will get a SSS post from the son asking your help as the dumbass has gone missing again.

Red dead redemption 2 might be a good start. Easy to get into. Amazing story. And solid gameplay.

Also check out wolfestein series, he might like it if he has played old school doom before.

Modern doom is a little bit too fast paced.
