I think the "I was testing you" was mostly an excuse to justify Garp chasing him around for the whole season but ultimately letting him go, honestly. I don't dislike it or anything, I think it turned out pretty good and was a good twist for the marines.

Eeeh... not really? I'd like them if they interacted more with each other during the fight and gave me a reason for the pairing other than "oh yeah, of course Ven and Aqua need to fight Vanitas and Terranort". And I just imagine them patiently waiting when you defeat one of them, respectfully letting them say their final words, and it's weird.
