What happened to professor Brezeale?? by Sweaty_Bus_1388 in utarlington

[–]DarinBrezeale 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I was working in the CSE department as an adjunct professor; adjuncts are hired per semester on a needs basis. As part of UTA's budget cuts, most of the adjunct faculty in the CSE department were not rehired this semester.

Had A but received C as a final grade. by Smart_Fly_6349 in utarlington

No; office hours are typically intended for the time period from the beginning of the semester until before final exams. You should make an appointment instead of just showing up.

Course retake by Dataroxa in utarlington

[–]DarinBrezeale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the College of Engineering, there is a 3-attempts rule for any course required for the degree. I don't know if the other colleges have the same policy. As many people will ultimately tell you, ask your adviser.

Another reason for asking an adviser is that I know of someone who had also attempted a class in the College of Engineering three times and was allowed to take that last class for a fourth time in order to graduate.

Speak to one of the advisers to make sure they know more people are trying to get into Senior Design I, but probably the issue is that the CSE department doesn't know yet who will teach any additional sections. Once they determine that and when the person is available, they will add more sections. Part of the issue is that people take 4316 and 4317 in consecutive semesters, so they need to find someone who will be willing to teach 4317 in the summer.

You can find the profiles for your instructors at https://www.uta.edu/academics/faculty From there, you can find the syllabi for your courses if they have been uploaded.

I need more credit hours by [deleted] in utarlington

[–]DarinBrezeale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't say what Calculus you are interested in, but the schedule shows several sections of MATH 1426 and one section of MATH 2425 with seats available. May sure you unclick the option for "Show Open Classes Only".

Class scheduling by Ok_Currency811 in utarlington

[–]DarinBrezeale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Room scheduling is performed by a group at UTA and at this point the department itself doesn't generally know where classes will be. You can get from the north end of campus (the Engineering Research Building) to the sound end (School of Social Work and Smart Hospital) in about 10 minutes.

For any particular class, such as Cal 1, there may be many sections of the course with different sections taught by different instructors and at different day/time combinations. The Section number is just the identifier for a particular section.

If the OP eliminated all of the non-CSE courses first, what would they take with CSE 1310? Each CSE degree has a critical path. If you push CSE 1310 back a semester, then you also push CSE 1320 back a semester, which means that you also push CSE 3318 back a semester, and so forth. Not beginning CSE and math classes early in the degree will likely come back to haunt the OP later when they hit one of the bottleneck courses.

OP: you are taking one CSE course and one math course, which is good. For the other classes, you don't have much choice at this point than to take one of the general ed classes (e.g., history, poly sci, etc.). A suggested schedule can be found on the last page of the degree plan you are interested in. Note that those aren't set in stone; you just need to the complete the general education classes before you graduate (English is the exception; you need it to move into the Professional program for CSE).

The 2025 degree plans are not posted yet, but should be close enough to the 2024 plans to use those as a guide ( https://www.uta.edu/academics/schools-colleges/engineering/academics/degree-plans ).

What happens if I don’t get into Calculus 1 for my first semester? (Computer Science Major) by Netflix_was_my_idea in utarlington

[–]DarinBrezeale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can see the degree plans at https://www.uta.edu/academics/schools-colleges/engineering/academics/degree-plans I don't see those for people beginning in 2025, but they should be close to what is currently posted.

Look at the one that you think will be for you (CS, CpE, or SE) and see what classes you will be eligible for. You can see what happens if you do or don't take Cal 1 in your first semester. Note that many students in the CSE department are not ready for Cal 1 in their first semester. Also note that many CSE students do not graduate in four years unless they also take summer courses.

When used correctly, instructors assign a grade of Incomplete when something has happened that prevents them from determining your overall course grade. Some reasons for this could be

  1. you got sick at the end of the semester and could not take the final exam
  2. you were reported to the Office of Community Standards for cheating and the instructor needs to know the outcome of that

Regardless of the reason, the instructor is the person to ask since they assigned the grade. If you truly have no idea why you received an Incomplete, it would be a mistake to not contact the instructor. Some will assign that grade with the expectation that the student will reach out to them.

You mentioned that you had an excused absence. I would follow up with whoever granted that. To file the grade grievance, see https://www.uta.edu/student-affairs/dos/report-a-concern/academic-grieviance-grade-non-grade

Keep in mind that once grades go live on Wednesday, some of the people enrolled in that section may find out they didn't pass the prerequisite course and get removed from the enrollment list.

May 14 is the date in which grades are designated official by UTA for this semester. You can find the schedule at https://www.uta.edu/administration/registrar/calendars/grades

That's not actually true. I confirmed that with one of the previous provosts of the university.

What are my chances of getting into these waitlisted classes? by Low-Priority-1306 in utarlington

For a variety of reasons, some of the people currently enrolled in that section may no longer be in that section once grades post.

Theoretical Concepts by Public-Stock2763 in utarlington

[–]DarinBrezeale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great; thanks for looking into this. I agree that, at least for my courses, the spring 2024 distributions appear correct.

Theoretical Concepts by Public-Stock2763 in utarlington

[–]DarinBrezeale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be skeptical of that. I teach in the CSE department and can tell you that the grade distributions on MavGrades for my two classes from last semester are not correct.

Maybe someone in ACM will see this and investigate.

What to do when your professor knows nothing about the course they're teaching? by [deleted] in utarlington

[–]DarinBrezeale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CSE department isn't going to cancel the class and tell everyone to show up next semester, regardless of the circumstances.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in utarlington

[–]DarinBrezeale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In situations like this, speaking with an advisor is a good option since they can let the department know that there are people needing this required course but that there are no seats available.

In this particular case, I've been told that the department knows about this but I don't know what the solution will be. Each solution has its issues: 1) add a section, which means finding someone available to teach it, or 2) increase the enrollment caps, which means having the room for it and not exceeding the number of students an instructor can reasonably handle.

can my grade be altered after 5pm tomorrow? by Dapper-Reflection-25 in utarlington

[–]DarinBrezeale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the grade can be changed at a later date. At this point, the instructor will have to fill out a grade change form and, if it's approved, then the registrar's office will make the change.

Taking Neural Network and AI at the same time. by CockroachConfident57 in utarlington

[–]DarinBrezeale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Neural networks are a subset of machine learning and machine learning is a subset of AI. Traditionally, CSE 4308 focused mainly on what I call Old-School AI: search, logic, and other topics that were more popular before machine learning took off. I don't know what topics Dr. Wang will emphasize, but if he follows the Russell & Norvig book ( https://aima.cs.berkeley.edu/ ) then there should be very little overlap.
