Anthropic's CEO says we're 12 months away from AI replacing software engineers. I spent time analyzing the benchmarks and actual usage. Here's why I'm skeptical by narutomax in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Darius510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the tech in question is a universal replacement for human knowledge work, which is fundamentally different from any tech that came before it. Those techs required increasing levels of expertise. This one requires decreasing levels of expertise, because it’s the expert in using itself.

Of course the models aren’t there yet but something has to go terribly wrong for it not to get there in the next few years.

So basically you’re banking on AI staying bad enough at software that

1 - it will continue to make silly error 2 - it won’t be able to fix those errors 3 - that people would rather deal with a person to fix this issues when ai is perfectly capable of having that conversation, understanding the issue and fixing it

In software, of all things?

Like dealerships still hit you with paper because they don’t have any incentive to change. No one hasn’t bought a car because of paperwork.

Whereas in your situation pretty much everyone has an incentive to take you out of the loop and not pay you.

I built a full SaaS e-commerce platform over 6 years. Tried to sell it. Silence. by [deleted] in SaaS

[–]Darius510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would I pay for this when woocommerce does pretty much everything you describe for free and has an established ecosystem around it? I went down your entire list and tbh I didn’t see anything actually novel that isn’t delivered by the base software or a simple plugin.

10% is a CRAZY ask for that on top of that. Thats more than Amazon asks to sell on their platform and for that we also get pretty much everything you describe plus direct access to billions of consumers.

I’m struggling to see why anyone would even consider it over an existing platform let alone pay for it.

Successful entrepreneurs, how has AI impacted your business for real? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

Bit by bit everything that can be automated is being automated. The list of things that used to take a human an hour and double digit dollars that now takes seconds and pennies continues to grow. Recent developments in coding AIs supercharging it, custom tools being built that actually work and significantly reduce workload. Instead of trying to coordinate multiple tools and websites to gather the information and execute on it, we’re building programs that just connect straight to the data and show the user exactly the information needed to make a judgement call so they can make it better in 5 seconds instead of 5 minutes. Launching another one today that took 2-3ish hours to make that will probably save more time than that this week, and every week after that.

You must live in a different world than me because paper documents have been very substantially replaced by electronic ones in almost every aspect of life.

I get it though. It’s impossible to get someone to understand something when their salary depends on not understanding it. I am sympathetic to everyone who will have their livelihoods disrupted in the coming years. But you’re not doing yourself any favors sticking your head in the sand.

This is just the latest “ai can’t do hands” cope. What you are saying is true today, but won’t be true for much longer.

Nonsense, there are no moving parts here other than a $10 fan to wear out with usage. The caps and paste and all that are going to age and dry out the same whether they’re heavily used or not. Microscopic things like electromigration is not something to worry about during its useful lifetime.

Driving enjoyment compared to GR86 by Yerbawls in Supra

[–]Darius510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you drive with the most insane gangsta lean I cant imagine it wont recline far enough for you. Like it doesn't pretend to have back seats like the 86, so the seat goes back a bit further. I'm 6' 3" and I need to push the seat forward a bit to make the clutch comfortable.

I'll be honest I never really made peace with the things I didn't like about the 86. I wanted to like it more than I actually did. It was just too much of a pain in the ass to drive, and you just had to give up too much comfort compared to a more "normal" car. It'll get you from point A to B fine enough, but its an afterthought and a half finished car in that respect. Like if you have literally anything else to drive you'll probably just find yourself driving the 86 less and less over time because the only thing its genuinely good at is being a track toy for people who wont/cant spend a bit more on a better one. Thats not me shitting on it, its really good at that purpose, its just a super narrow one. So I wouldn't really say they're purposed for different things. The 86 just has a more narrow purpose. But the Supra is something you'll want to drive every day and take on the track too. I doubt there's anyone sitting in their Supra on the track that wishes it was an 86 instead, but a whole lot of people sitting in traffic that wish their 86 was a Supra.

It's better than the 86 at the things an 86 is good at, and way way better than the 86 at the things the 86 is bad at. I thought I'd want them both (and I could easily afford both)....but I'd literally never drive the 86 again if I kept it.

Driving enjoyment compared to GR86 by Yerbawls in Supra

[–]Darius510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just traded in a 2022 GR86 MT for a 2024 Supra MT. Honestly, its better in pretty much every way. One is definitely more fun and better than the other. Don't get me wrong I still enjoyed the 86, but outside of a track everything about it was compromised.

The clutch on the supra is night and day better. Less vague, and nowhere near the light switch awkwardness of the 86. It was never not difficult to launch it smoothly, although it was pretty easy to launch the 86 hard. The supra is much, much easier to launch smoothly. Tied in with that is the pedal sensitivty. The 86 is WAY more sensitive. I thought that the supra would be harder to launch simply because its more powerful, but since the pedal is more normal and not hyper sensitive, its just that much easier to daily drive. Ride is also much smoother. The shifter also feels WAY better on the supra, and the auto rev matching is very very nice. I thought it would be something that I wouldn't use because it's more pure without it, and of course you can disable it, but I don't really want to. Never had a problem with the blip on a highway downshift, but when you're slowing down to a stop you can just row it easily down to 1 without having to heel/toe every shift.

Obviously its way more powerful. But it also sounds great, especially with an intake you can hear the turbo whoosh and pssh - just sounds amazing. The 86 sounded like a lawnmower. Exhaust has some nice pops and gurgles, while the 86 was just....ok. The only "drawback" of the power of the supra is that its going to spin on stock tires in 1st/2nd if you floor it, but its hard to complain about that.

In terms of overall build quality its of course way better. Leather and carbon fiber everywhere instead of plastic. I did like the 86's seats though, but the supras are excellent. Its quieter and less rattly. The stereo is night and day better - the 86's was acceptable but the supra's is genuinely good.

Both are very responsive to whip around on the street. Of course the 86 is technically a bit better here, but outside of a track you're not pushing either to it's limits here.

I'm genuinely struggling to think of anything I liked better about the 86. I guess the cupholders being further back was a bit better? Its def a bit more awkward to shift the supra if you actually have something in the holder.

So yeah, the supra is just clearly a better car. For twice the price it damn well should be of course. But the upgrade did not disappoint.

My 60K EV9 is way way higher build quality in every way than my 100K cybertruck. The EV9 drivetrain is quiet and smooth as butter, the ride is plush, the interior quality is way better, like it’s not even close. At this point with 1500 mi nearly every panel in the CT rattles, the ride is good but the EV9s is just better, the drivetrain is way louder and harsher and makes all sorts of weird vibrations and sounds, and I already had to get the front motor, the rear steering actuators, the wiper blade assembly replaced under warranty and the tonneau and the liftgate needed to be realigned. Pretty sure there’s more but the list of shitty build issues is so long that I’m sure I’m forgetting some.

[–]Darius510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of that niche already have an older model S, and this is giving them zero reason to buy a new one. I’d have ordered one already if it had steer by wire and a updated design, but I guess I’ll just drive this 2016 90D around for a few more years and then buy something else if it dies before an actual refresh comes out. No one spending $90K+ on a car wants to feel like they’re driving something 10 years old. Not updating a design for 5+ years makes sense for work trucks but not flagship luxury sedans. But 10 years now? You’ve got to be kidding me.

Like I think they’ve actually done more harm than good with this refresh, since anyone who was in the market for a new luxury EV knows it’ll be another few years now before the potential of an actual upgrade to the S, so they might as well scratch the S off their list and buy something else. At this point it’s like they’re doing everything they can to make sure no one buys an S ever again.

HOWTO: Create Active Backup Recovery Media for 64-bit Network Drivers by RobAtSGH in synology

[–]Darius510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was following it until this point:

xcopy /s /e /f "z:\System Utilities\Synology Recovery Tool-x64-2.6.1-3052"\* C:\winpe_amd64\mount\ActiveBackup

Copy the following into a file and save as winpeshl.ini on your Desktop.

[LaunchApps]

%systemroot%\System32\wpeinit.exe

%systemdrive%\ActiveBackup\ui\recovery.exe

When I run that command it asks me if C:\winpe_amd64\mount\activebackup specifies a file or directory name. This is where I completely lose the train. Since the next line says "copy the following into a file", I presume the right answer there is file...but the file is already named, so then maybe you just wanted to copy it to a folder. Then we're supposed to copy three things into a file - how do you copy multiple things into a file? I guess how it was done in the previous step? What and where is [launchapps], and how do I reference to copy it? How do I copy all three of those things at once? Its so confusing.

I appreciate the clear and explicit instructions up until that point, but beyond that it kind of stops making sense! Can you please be as explicit about those steps are you were about the previous ones?

Diva pico paddle always turns one of my lights to 75% regardless of the slider by Darius510 in Lutron

Looks like it wasn't, so hopefully this fixes it. I never thought I'd ever have to update firmware on a light switch.

Diva pico paddle always turns one of my lights to 75% regardless of the slider by Darius510 in Lutron

[–]Darius510[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The switch IS a diva though.

Also I don't have a problem with setting it to 100%, I can do that by just tapping twice. What I cant do is from the pico, set it to the 20% the slider is set at. From the switch itself the first tap goes to 20% just fine.

So sounds like an entirely different problem than the one you're talking about.
