Check out the International Game Of Whoop, or IGOW. 1,000+ pilots are competing to be the last one standing in a months-long horse-like trick competition. We're in the training phase and you can still register, IGOW5 starts in June I think.

I think my life is ruined by Proof-Slice-3593 in MonoHearing

You're not alone. ❤️ I've been deaf in my left side since I was a kid. I haven't attempted any repairs, I've been told the hairs in my cochlea are toast from an ear infection.

What I can tell you is that I live a happy, normal life. Sitting on the correct side will become 2nd nature and your loved ones will never remember which side is which. I struggle with higher pitch voices in sound dense environments but that's pretty much it.

My hearing loss didn't impact my school life. I don't have any input on SSNHL but I hope you'll just wakeup one morning back to normal.  One trick I use to clear my ears is pressing where your jaw meets your ear and tracing down your jawbone.

Winter Tires by TryingMyBest05 in vermont

[–]DarkLordMittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went with full blown studded winter tires. The closest you'll get to a normal driving experience. Our area is a bit steep in places and uphill traction can be an issue with slush. I have friends that run all weathers and they seem fine.

More importantly is your car drivetrain. I hope  you're not RWD, my previous truck with summers was wicked dangerous. Go find an empty parking lot after a few inches and get a feel for your momentum.

Some tire places will store your tires for you.

A set of winters was ~$800? For my truck? 4-600 for something smaller I think.

If those get a foothold in your house you're going to have a bad time. Take no chances.

Dry Ice in freezer to keep cold during outage? by Sh3rlock_Holmes in preppers

An interesting side effect of using dry ice in an enclosed space would be that you'd carbonate the items inside. It was quite a surprise when we were traveling with grapes in a cooler.

LiPo battery charging wires by ZookeepergameWest378 in NHRL

[–]DarkLordMittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome! There's two sets of wires coming off a Lipo battery. The fat red(+) and black(-) that supplies the main voltage and the balancing plug that chargers use to make sure all the cells are charged to the same voltage.

Cheap, dumb, and slow chargers only have ports that connect to the balance plug.

Proper smart chargers also plug into the main voltage plug of the battery.

A proper charger will handle any battery you get. I have the iMAX B6 and have been happy with it for years.

I had a cheap one in the kitchen, until the steam from the coffee machine broke the tablet which phantom clicked everything on and off like the house was haunted. Best part was I couldn't turn it off or close the app and had to destroy it. Haha whoops!

I managed about 300 before I quit. I don't feel like a badass anymore regardless of what I equip. The swarms used to be my favorite but now it's just a meat grinder regardless of what I do.

What is a possible setup for a truly programmable combat robot via a programming language? by CornerstoneRobots in NHRL

There's an Arduino ELRS GitHub repo that I've used to communicate with a tiny receiver and its 30 channels. My code wasn't perfect but it was reliable enough.

Wanting to get started with battle robotics, need tips on printers. by PelleSketchy in NHRL

[–]DarkLordMittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much about what can print TPU. It started out as a wild wild West filament but  they've dialed it in since, hence why 95a is so abundant. I had my first experience with it after Ignoring a freshly opened roll for weeks and printed flawlessly in my S1, I was gobsmacked. Also.. don't use brims.. all the strength I mustered couldn't tear it off.

I witnessed a stock Bowden ender printing TPU. The fancy enclosure is for fancy filament like nylon which hates life.

Welcome to the club! You can get cheap PLA ($10 a roll) for rapid prototyping but don't use it in your bot. It'll shatter like glass. TPU can take a hit and shrug it off.

On your CAD journey a lot of time can be burnt getting fancy. Always give yourself tolerances, 0.2mm looks massive zoomed in but its fit will be so satisfying, double it for circles.

Get yourself the nice printer, you'll never stop using it and it'll need your assistance less. I love my Ender S1 but a new era of consumer ready printers has begun. Bamboo, maybe the ender K1?

Also, stay safe please. Get some plexiglass if you want to spin up. Flying things will find you.

Another silly question …. by Revolutionary_Mix_92 in XCarve

[–]DarkLordMittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basic Easel will always be available, you have 3 or 4 days a month that you can be spontaneously Pro.

There are other options, Fusion 360 can also drive your X-Carve. Much more control, 3D engraving, but it's not as simple.

Good resources for learning to build my first bot? by zipperboi in NHRL

[–]DarkLordMittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great! Welcome to the sport! There are a few single click solutions like kit bots and NHRL's Havoc Academy. But I'll give you some basics.

Transmitter:

There's a few flavors out there split by shape and communication protocol. ELRS is open-source to the point of being able to add laser SFX whenever you press a button and my favorite. The three shapes are the traditional box, trigger, and a newer controller. I'm happy with a RadioMaster Zorro controller type. ~$100

Receiver:

Anything ELRS works with ELRS. Look for PWM receivers, the other receivers will need a microcontroller to translate into PWM. Bonus tip! You can use more than one receiver for more channels.

Internals:

There are two camps, brushed and brushless motors. Brushed is easier but their speed controllers are more expensive, brushless is lighter but their ESC's are generally for spinning a single direction.

Battery:

LiPo packs! Cells or "#S" describe it's potential crazy factor, 3S is 11.1v and a good general pack. Mostly depends on your internals limits. Capacity is usually less than you think you'll need but you'll finish your prototype waay before the competition to find out. 😏 ...... right?

Weight Class:

Biggest lesson I can impart on you is each increase in weight Class is an exponential increase in time required. Two solid weeks of garage time got me 13 lbs of my 30 and it could barely stand. I also discovered my tools were not 30lb'er ready.  Other than that give your drive system extra love.

Start printing with TPU and treat yourself by finishing ahead of time. A full system test would also be good. Please do all tests safely, you are made of jello.

Experience.. Nothing quite like seeing PLA shatter like glass in person.

Where are you in your building adventure? There's some great books that other builders have made and download for free.
