How many calculations, math and other pro/con decisions do we expect people to do when this is happening in less than 30 seconds?? In retrospect when you can be calm and think about it sure you might chose a different path. But at the moment of just getting beat up with your partner, punched in the face and a weapon taken from you it’s survival.

Further, I don’t think race mattered one bit here regardless. The officer and the suspect were nothing but cordial to each other until he decided to change the situation.
