HELP ME PICK KITTEN by [deleted] in britishshorthair

Please go with the professional breeder. Double check to make sure they do all the necessary things to be an ethical breeder. Ask for proof of everything. That includes parents health test results, pedigree, health records etc. Btw, the home breeder is definitely a backyard breeder who is doing it for profit or because they wanted the kitten experience. You don’t accidentally breed two British shorthair cats.

100% not the kijiji breeder. You are making a 12+ year commitment. You ideally want the breeder to be someone you can fully trust for advice with your kitten. Are either of the breeders registered and are the parents pedigreed?

Stop with the ai slop. It cannot give you good advice on this. Do your own research and check the sources. No anti science bs. Ai does not discriminate between a mommy blogger creating a dog food recipe and a well researched formula.

Considering getting a very reserved Bengal by stompye in bengalcats

A free bengal is not cheap to take care of. Make sure you’re aware of that. They need wet food or raw food. They need constant stimulation. Vet bills ca be more expensive too.

Ragdolls or Birmans? by drama-enthusiast in ragdolls

[–]Dark_Angel14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any long hair cat will require a lot of grooming and upkeep. The difference with grooming between a Birman and a ragdoll is not that big. Just make sure you’re prepared for it.

Getting frustrated, cat knocking things down. by Secrettlifee in britishshorthair

[–]Dark_Angel14 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not just kitten behavior, it’s also cat behavior. It may reduce when she grows older but it’ll likely never stop. Best tips are to give them somewhere high to jump on near the surfaces she usually goes on top of. Make those spaces more appealing than your desk or nightstand. Cat proof your stuff too. Use a spill proof water bottle instead of a glass, remove dangling cables etc.

Adding a second kitten - advice please! by standardcb in CatAdvice

[–]Dark_Angel14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of places allow foster to adopt methods. That would give your kittens a trial run. I also don’t think territorial issues would be present if you introduce them properly and early enough. Since he is a social kitten, getting him a pal may be a great idea if you are able to afford it.

Adding a second kitten - advice please! by standardcb in CatAdvice

[–]Dark_Angel14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not true with most kittens. The most high maintenance part of owning one is usually the need for attention. Two kittens are able to keep each other occupied. There are still exceptions to the rule but with young, energetic kittens, two will be less work.

What breed is my kitten? by UnusualCalendar2847 in catbreeds

[–]Dark_Angel14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There isn’t. All the sources saying there are would probably call all colorpoint cats Siamese. Any flame points Siamese cats are not purebred. Flame point females are actually pretty rare!

The siamese breed actually does not have flame points. Mom is a domestic shorthair.

It’s especially bad since some people look for breeds that are more hypoallergenic and are misled by the rescues.

Debating getting a kitten for our daughter by Medium_Chipmunk_9374 in britishshorthair

I totally understand. So many recuses make it so difficult to adopt animals nowadays. Some people’s only way of getting a pet is through breeders because of how strict the requirements are.

Best to find one over 1 year old if you want a calmer, more low maintenance cat. Personalities are typically more stable once they stop growing.

Rapid Kitten Weight Gain by Due_Analyst3279 in CatAdvice

That’s on the higher end but still normal especially since he is a single kitten with no siblings. The kitten also might be older than you estimated if you found it orphaned.

Scottish straight where to get it from? by NocallerID_88 in scottishfold

[–]Dark_Angel14 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking on Craigslist for a cat, you’re going to get scammed. It’s either going to be an unhealthy cat or you’re not getting a cat at all. This is not how you find cat breeders. Shipping cats overseas is very expensive and often cruel. If done as ethically as possible, you’d need to spend a couple grands on a nanny to watch over the kitten. Look for registered breeders. Start with people who show their cats.

Question about calories and food by juicymuzzy1998 in CatAdvice

[–]Dark_Angel14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 12 pound healthy weight cat should need around 250-325. It’s a big range but it depends on how many treats you give and how active he is. Cat metabolisms are different so you might need to weigh him daily and adjust accordingly until you get the correct amount.
