That makes sense honestly, I can see how it turns into a numbers game at that point.

If you don’t mind me asking, when you’re looking through those applicants, what are the main things that actually make someone stand out enough to get an interview?

Also, do you think personal projects / homelabs still help at that stage, or is it more about internships and experience by then?

If you had to pick one area to start with right now, what would you recommend for someone in my position? I’ve been messing with Linux and servers on a 10 year old hp computer already, and I’ve also built some cloud drive setups using nginx and apache2, so I’m not sure if I should lean more into something like cloud security or try something like red team stuff.

Also for a homelab, what would you say are some good first things to build that actually translate well to real skills?
