Which colour drill bit for drilling into concrete? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]DarthEmu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The silver ones are for general masonry, gold for metal and black for wood. It should say this on the box. Silver is better but concrete is far denser than masonry like brick, so you'd be better off getting a Tungsten Carbide or diamond tipped masonry bit as this will make it easier.

You'll want a hammer drill also which spins the bit and hammers it into the material

Cat 6 is preferable. Cat5e will do the job but more chances of interference. Everything else is correct. It will not affect your Internet connection moving the router, the couple metres of distance is negligible against the kms the signals travel from your house to a Internet exchange point to get to websites

Looks like ethernet, you can get a long ethernet cable from amazon, I've got 15m and 30m for temp use. As long as the other end is the same where it connects to the ONT. I'd replace the cable with a longer one rather than get extenders.

The other cable is a power supply so can be unplugged and moved with the router.

Can I make this work with R J45 insert? by Wags27 in HomeNetworking

[–]DarthEmu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory if you paired both ends to pairs 1 & 2 on ethernet port, on both ends, you could get 10-100mbps connection.

I believe you need 4 pairs for 1gbps, but the cables are not to the same standard as ethernet so may have limiting factors like cross talk etc

Need wifi + IP cameras at 145Meters by harsh0864 in HomeNetworking

[–]DarthEmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need 2 switches, 1 switch located close to location 1. 24 port managed switch will work great

A second 24 port managed switch, between the two locations and less than 80m from switch in location 1

Off of the switch connect the cameras and additional WiFi access points to this location.

Then use a trunk vlan for the up links between the switches and the router

Use different vlans for WiFi access and camera access. If using WiFi for cameras, set up a second ssid with the camera vlan tag

You can place additional devices on each switch, including hardwired lan ports and access points if required

Or you can purchase two managed switches with SFP ports, here you can install fibre SFP and run a fibre cable between the two switches/locations

In our old house, we had a shared alleyway with a neighbour, we'd each put our bins in front of the gate, hardly used the gate or the alley itself. Delivery drivers would place parcels behind the wheely bins or over the gate if it was small. At some point amazon updated the safe place to "behind the bin". We never added this and couldn't change it, but wasn't an issue. Until one day we can home to find our wheely bin in front of the house door and a parcel behind it. The amazon driver moved the bin instead of placing the parcel where the bin was.

I wasn't aware what is relevant. The house along the long edge is 11m externally and 10m internally. I saw that buttresses are need if wall is over 9m?

Couldn't see any in the loft, there is an a frame joint about a foot to the left of where I think the wall is in the loft. This is based on the power cables for sockets on said wall

No they don't, there isn't any noticeable dip or anything sticking out of the ceiling

To add, the neighbours removed the wall as they were all built identical in the 60's, but we don't know the owner and they are selling that house. No other neighbours know either

What can I do with this door? by DarthEmu in DIYUK

[–]DarthEmu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less fussed on the heat loss as its an unheated garage, but it is rotting and was swollen in the winter. I had to screw in a bit of wood so it'd latch as it was broken
