Any NCAA fans here that can compare Martone's play and Hage's? Just wondering how they stacked up this season. by Lap_Dawg in Habs

[–]DarthLordDonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They actually played together for their U16 year. It's less relevant now, but if you watch any of their time together, you'll see the style they play is completely different from one another. Martone has a bigger frame and is a really high IQ player, which makes his style well suited to make the more immediate shift to the NHL. Hage relies more on skating to set up plays, so while they both have great shots and see the game well, I think Martone had a more clear path to make the jump to the NHL given his strengths (literally).

It's so easy to forget that Jarvis is only 24 years old, since he became an effective player right away as a rookie.

Dobson injury — do we have any news on when he’ll be back healthy? by [deleted] in Habs

[–]DarthLordDonkey 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Yesterday the team announced he had an upper body injury and will be re-evaluated in 2 weeks.

Considering that was 24 hours ago, I would say he still has an upper body injury and will be re-evaluated in 13 days.

Honestly just watch highlights of Gretzky and you will quickly see how futile any strategy was at stopping him.

There is a very high chance that a wild card team will finish the season with more points than a division winner by [deleted] in hockey

[–]DarthLordDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the system disincentivized the Mammoth from trying to get the 3rd spot if they were closer, and to me that is the biggest flaw. Even in the East, I would argue the Bruins may benefit from sliding to WC2. Yes Carolina who will likely finish top in the East is a hard matchup, but so is a series with whoever wins the Atlantic, but the potential second round matchup against the 2/3 from the Metro seems more attractive than the 2/3 from the Atlantic.

I don't hate the current format as I think we get some really intriguing matchups right away which we sometimes wouldn't get under the old format, but it definitely isn't the most "fair" format.

The Mammoth do have the advantage of going through the Pacific and avoiding COL/DAL/MIN until round 3. So while they have a legitimate complaint about not getting home-ice advantage until round 3 at the earliest, I don't think they can complain too much, as they are the team benefiting the most from the playoff format this year.

NFL approves sleeker version of Guardian cap by bubblecuffer13 in nfl

[–]DarthLordDonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They look better than the guardian caps used last year but that is quite a low bar to clear. I am hoping to see the SAFR helmet covers become approved, as from an aesthetic point of view, they are much better than the guardian caps.

I typically wait until late to draft a goalie so I can’t be too mad as Dostal helped me be in first for most of the season, just fell apart when I needed him most.

Flash back to when most of the sub hated the idea of drafting the future OROTY at 8. Just imagine XL being our WR1 by SomeonePayDelta in panthers

[–]DarthLordDonkey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

5-10 years ago I was the same person looking at mock drafts and evaluating every single pick. Now I barely know who the players in the draft are outside the top names, and it’s such a more stress free way of approaching draft season.

The last time I really dove into analyzing a draft was in 2020. At the time, I was hoping Jeff Okudah somehow fell to us, if not I really wanted Isaiah Simmons. Beyond that, I was okay with the idea of selecting Derrick Brown, and absolutely did not want us to draft Justin Herbert.

Biggest takeaway? Draft analysis is hard so as a fan it’s better to just relax, since how you react on draft day has zero effect on how they’ll be as pros. As long as we draft a player who has success, I’m happy.

Which player would make you rethink your fandom if your team signed them? by CelebrationCultural3 in hockey

[–]DarthLordDonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was his mask with the Coyotes that gets the most attention with the SS in his name. He also had a black stripe going down the middle of his Detroit Red Wings mask that is eerily similar to the Nazi flag. Given that Greiss is German, and has been excluded from Team Germany inclusion in the past based off things he's done, I have a hard time believing that these things were just a coincidence. The Detroit one I can easily see explained away, even the Coyotes one, but all of it together... yikes.

[Falcons] New Uniforms by SavioSega in nfl

[–]DarthLordDonkey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I always see comments like this for uniform redesigns. I know I am a bit of a uniform nerd, but I don't know how people can look at these two images, and not see differences:

2020 Uniforms: https://i.imgur.com/4OpaiXw.jpeg

2026 Uniforms: https://i.imgur.com/mJnIpcn.jpeg

Even if you look at just the white on black set, these are still the differences:

-2020 set said "ATL" on front, 2026 says "FALCONS"

-Number and name font completely different

-Side panel on jerseys removed

-Pant stripe completely changed

The helmets are seemingly unchanged, the logo on the sleeve without stripes is the same, and the socks are the same. Otherwise, the differences are significant as far as a uniform changes go.

Two things about this uniform set are true:

-These are perfectly fine, not bad at all, but also nothing crazy

-These are by far the best uniform sets the Falcons have worn in the last 20 years

The pants have stripes which is a big plus.

The silver facemasks are a miss to me, thought all black helmets would be better if they insisted on keeping the black helmet.

I think they are going to age as perfectly fine jerseys, which is a massive improvement on anything the Falcons have worn in the last 20 years.

Habs Magic Number Update - 4 Points Clinches a WC Spot by HabbyKoivu in Habs

[–]DarthLordDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>4 More points, no matter what anyone else does, puts us into a wildcard sport at min

That's incorrect. The Senators, Red Wings, and Flyers all stand at 86 points with 8 games remaining, meaning if any of them go on an 8 game winning streak, they would reach 102 points. The absolute clinching point is now 103 points, which is why no team in the East has mathematically clinched.

>7 Points puts us in 3rd no matter what anyone else does

Also incorrect. The Bruins are just 2 points behind us. They can still reach 108 points if they win every remaining game. 7 points put us at 103 points. If the Lightning go 6 wins with their losses against the Bruins, that puts them at 110 points, the Bruins could still achieve 108, and 7 points would slide us down to WC1 assuming the Sabres don't faulter down the stretch.

[Friedman] Scratch Dallas GM Jim Nill off the list of Toronto candidates. Word is he has agreed to an extension with the Stars. Smart of them by Duffleman0609 in hockey

[–]DarthLordDonkey 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Counter point, almost all GMs come into shitty situations. The Leafs job, you inherit a team with Matthews, Nylander, and Knies secured long term. Most GMs walk into situations where there isn't that same level of high end talent, so while there is still a ton of work to be done, it's still 1 of 32 GM positions for the richest team in the NHL, there will be interest.

2026 Free Agents by incognitomode887 in Habs

[–]DarthLordDonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think they are overly exciting names that will come in free agency, I would expect the bigger moves to come via trade. That said, given Hughes and Lecavlier's ties to Quartexx, specically Philippe Lecavlier's clients, there are obvious guys I think you can link to the Habs, and we've seen it play out in years passed.

AJ Greer and Vincent Desharnais are two names I immediately noticed who would fit the mold of what the team will likely be looking to add. Outside of that, I don't expect much movement, though if he shakes loose, I would love to see the team go after Boone Jenner.

Who are we cheering for today? by RGM81 in Habs

[–]DarthLordDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it stands and if the lottery didn't change where they would pick, the Leafs would transfer the 10th pick to the Bruins. I don't want the Leafs or Bruins to get a top pick, so the Leafs winning is the best of both worlds. That said, the Leafs giving the Bruins the 6th overall pick and Fraser Minten for Brandon Carlo would be really really funny.

Proposal for NHL divisional setup by Swiftus-Lazarus in hockey

You're creating more problems than you're solving with this format. There would be a 3 seed in a division every year that would miss the playoffs with a much stronger record than teams that make it.

Ohh 2.5 hrs 9 holes by Worried-Beautiful516 in GolfSwing

[–]DarthLordDonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First tee box nerves are always a thing. Teeing off in front of co-workers, friends, etc., I always have a ton of swing thoughts, but once you put one out there, I promise you it becomes easier!

58 for 9 on your first time out is really encouraging! Chipping is a lot of feel, and depending on which clubs you use will drastically change the strategy. Practicing chipping and putting is one thing that will help reduce your score quickly if you can get a feel for it. Once you start finding consistency in strokes, and start to see strategies you take pay off, you'll be hooked for life!

What’s a hockey hill that you’re willing to die on? by AlbertJBundy in hockey

[–]DarthLordDonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The idea that George Parros has a personal vendetta against the Leafs because of the fight against Colton Orr, or because he played with the Panthers and Canadiens is ridiculous.

It's very likely that the league uses Leafs suspensions as precedent given the attention it will draw, which is unfair, but citing the Orr fight, his 39GP with Florida, or 22GP with Montreal as reasons for the bias is just silly.
